As-Sāffāt

1 : 37

وَٱلصَّٰٓفَّٰتِ صَفّٗا

1. (I swear) by those (angels) lined up in rows.

2 : 37

فَٱلزَّٰجِرَٰتِ زَجۡرٗا

2. and (by) those (angels) who diligently drive (the clouds),

3 : 37

فَٱلتَّٰلِيَٰتِ ذِكۡرًا

3. And those who recite the Reminder.

4 : 37

إِنَّ إِلَٰهَكُمۡ لَوَٰحِدٞ

4. Surely your God is indeed One (Allāh):

5 : 37

رَّبُّ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا بَيۡنَهُمَا وَرَبُّ ٱلۡمَشَٰرِقِ

5. Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, and Lord of the sun’s risings.

6 : 37

إِنَّا زَيَّنَّا ٱلسَّمَآءَ ٱلدُّنۡيَا بِزِينَةٍ ٱلۡكَوَاكِبِ

6. Indeed, We have adorned the nearest sky with an adornment of stars,

7 : 37

وَحِفۡظٗا مِّن كُلِّ شَيۡطَٰنٖ مَّارِدٖ

7. And as a preservation against every rebellious devil.

8 : 37

لَّا يَسَّمَّعُونَ إِلَى ٱلۡمَلَإِ ٱلۡأَعۡلَىٰ وَيُقۡذَفُونَ مِن كُلِّ جَانِبٖ

8. (So that) they may not eavesdrop to the exalted assembly (of angels), and are pelted from every side,

9 : 37

دُحُورٗاۖ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٞ وَاصِبٌ

9. Outcast, and for them is a perpetual torment,

10 : 37

إِلَّا مَنۡ خَطِفَ ٱلۡخَطۡفَةَ فَأَتۡبَعَهُۥ شِهَابٞ ثَاقِبٞ

10. Except him who snatches (some words) by theft, and there pursues him a piercing flame.

11 : 37

فَٱسۡتَفۡتِهِمۡ أَهُمۡ أَشَدُّ خَلۡقًا أَم مَّنۡ خَلَقۡنَآۚ إِنَّا خَلَقۡنَٰهُم مِّن طِينٖ لَّازِبِۭ

11. So inquire of them (the deniers) whether they are stronger in creation or those whom We have created ^[1]. Indeed, We created them ^[2] from a sticky clay.

[1]. Of the heavens, the earth and the angels.
[2]. I.e., their father Adam.

12 : 37

بَلۡ عَجِبۡتَ وَيَسۡخَرُونَ

12. Nay, you (Muhammad) wonder (at their denial), while they mock (you),

13 : 37

وَإِذَا ذُكِّرُواْ لَا يَذۡكُرُونَ

13. And when they are reminded, they mind not,

14 : 37

وَإِذَا رَأَوۡاْ ءَايَةٗ يَسۡتَسۡخِرُونَ

14. And when they see a sign, they make fun of it,

15 : 37

وَقَالُوٓاْ إِنۡ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحۡرٞ مُّبِينٌ

15. And they said, "This is nothing but clear magic.

16 : 37

أَءِذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابٗا وَعِظَٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبۡعُوثُونَ

16. When we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we then certainly be raised up (from the dead)?

17 : 37

أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا ٱلۡأَوَّلُونَ

17. And our earlier forefathers (as well)?"

18 : 37

قُلۡ نَعَمۡ وَأَنتُمۡ دَٰخِرُونَ

18. Say: "Yes, while you are utterly humiliated."

19 : 37

فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ زَجۡرَةٞ وَٰحِدَةٞ فَإِذَا هُمۡ يَنظُرُونَ

19. So, surely It is only one single shout ^[3], then at once they will be staring (in dread).

[3]. I.e. the second blowing of the Trumpet, causing all to rise from the dead for resurrection and Judgment.

20 : 37

وَقَالُواْ يَٰوَيۡلَنَا هَٰذَا يَوۡمُ ٱلدِّينِ

20. And they will say: "Woe to us, this is the Day of Recompense".

21 : 37

هَٰذَا يَوۡمُ ٱلۡفَصۡلِ ٱلَّذِي كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ

21. "This is the Day of Judgment which you used to deny."

22 : 37

۞ ٱحۡشُرُواْ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُواْ وَأَزۡوَٰجَهُمۡ وَمَا كَانُواْ يَعۡبُدُونَ

22.  (O angels), "Gather together those who did iniquity, and their likes ^[4], and what they used to worship,

[4]. In evil deeds.

23 : 37

مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ فَٱهۡدُوهُمۡ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطِ ٱلۡجَحِيمِ

23. Besides Allāh, so guide them (all) to the path of Hell.

24 : 37

وَقِفُوهُمۡۖ إِنَّهُم مَّسۡـُٔولُونَ

24. And stop them, indeed, they (are) to be questioned."

25 : 37

مَا لَكُمۡ لَا تَنَاصَرُونَ

25. What is the matter with you (pagans and deniers) that you help not one another?

26 : 37

بَلۡ هُمُ ٱلۡيَوۡمَ مُسۡتَسۡلِمُونَ

26. Nay, they are today surrendering themselves.

27 : 37

وَأَقۡبَلَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضٖ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ

27. And they will approach some of them to others mutually questioning,

28 : 37

قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّكُمۡ كُنتُمۡ تَأۡتُونَنَا عَنِ ٱلۡيَمِينِ

28. Saying: " Surely you (deniers) used to come to us from the right hand ^[5] (misleading us)."

[5]. From the power and authority.

29 : 37

قَالُواْ بَل لَّمۡ تَكُونُواْ مُؤۡمِنِينَ

29. (The misleaders) will say: "Rather, you yourselves were not believers;

30 : 37

وَمَا كَانَ لَنَا عَلَيۡكُم مِّن سُلۡطَٰنِۭۖ بَلۡ كُنتُمۡ قَوۡمٗا طَٰغِينَ

30. And we had no any power over you, nay, (but) you were a transgressing people;

31 : 37

فَحَقَّ عَلَيۡنَا قَوۡلُ رَبِّنَآۖ إِنَّا لَذَآئِقُونَ

31. So the Word (Decree) of (Allāh) our Lord has been justified against us. Indeed we have to taste (the torment);

32 : 37

فَأَغۡوَيۡنَٰكُمۡ إِنَّا كُنَّا غَٰوِينَ

32. So We caused you to deviate, indeed, we were deviators."

33 : 37

فَإِنَّهُمۡ يَوۡمَئِذٖ فِي ٱلۡعَذَابِ مُشۡتَرِكُونَ

33. So surely on that Day, they will (all) be sharers in the torment.

34 : 37

إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَفۡعَلُ بِٱلۡمُجۡرِمِينَ

34. Surely thus do We deal with the guilty.

35 : 37

إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوٓاْ إِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمۡ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ يَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ

35. Indeed, they were, when it was said to them, "There is no god (worthy of worship) except Allāh," were puffed-up with pride.

36 : 37

وَيَقُولُونَ أَئِنَّا لَتَارِكُوٓاْ ءَالِهَتِنَا لِشَاعِرٖ مَّجۡنُونِۭ

36. And they say: "Are we to leave our deities for a mad poet?"

37 : 37

بَلۡ جَآءَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَصَدَّقَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ

37. Rather, he (Muhammad) has come with the Truth and he confirms the messengers.

38 : 37

إِنَّكُمۡ لَذَآئِقُواْ ٱلۡعَذَابِ ٱلۡأَلِيمِ

38. Indeed, you (who deny the Truth) will certainly taste the painful torment.

39 : 37

وَمَا تُجۡزَوۡنَ إِلَّا مَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ

39. And you will not be recompensed except what you used to do -

40 : 37

إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِينَ

40. Except the sincere servants of Allāh.

41 : 37

أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ لَهُمۡ رِزۡقٞ مَّعۡلُومٞ

41. For those there is for them a known provision (in Paradise),

42 : 37

فَوَٰكِهُ وَهُم مُّكۡرَمُونَ

42. Fruits; and they will be honored,

43 : 37

فِي جَنَّٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ

43. In the Gardens of Bliss (Paradise),

44 : 37

عَلَىٰ سُرُرٖ مُّتَقَٰبِلِينَ

44. On thrones facing one another (joyfully).

45 : 37

يُطَافُ عَلَيۡهِم بِكَأۡسٖ مِّن مَّعِينِۭ

45. A cup (of pure wine) will be passed round among them from a clear flowing spring.

46 : 37

بَيۡضَآءَ لَذَّةٖ لِّلشَّٰرِبِينَ

46. White, delicious to the drinkers.

47 : 37

لَا فِيهَا غَوۡلٞ وَلَا هُمۡ عَنۡهَا يُنزَفُونَ

47. Wherein there is no in it bad effect, nor from it will they be intoxicated.

48 : 37

وَعِندَهُمۡ قَٰصِرَٰتُ ٱلطَّرۡفِ عِينٞ

48. And with them will be maidens of modest gaze and beautiful alluring eyes,

49 : 37

كَأَنَّهُنَّ بَيۡضٞ مَّكۡنُونٞ

49. As if they were pristine pearls.

50 : 37

فَأَقۡبَلَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضٖ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ

50.  Then they will approach one another, mutually questioning.

51 : 37

قَالَ قَآئِلٞ مِّنۡهُمۡ إِنِّي كَانَ لِي قَرِينٞ

51. A speaker among them will say: "Indeed, I had a companion for me (in the world),

52 : 37

يَقُولُ أَءِنَّكَ لَمِنَ ٱلۡمُصَدِّقِينَ

52. Saying: 'Are you indeed of those who believe (in the Resurrection after death)?

53 : 37

أَءِذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابٗا وَعِظَٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَدِينُونَ

53. Is it when we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be brought to Judgment?'"

54 : 37

قَالَ هَلۡ أَنتُم مُّطَّلِعُونَ

54. He will say ^[6]: "Would you (care to) look on (how is he now)?"

[6]. To his companions in Paradise.


   

55 : 37

فَٱطَّلَعَ فَرَءَاهُ فِي سَوَآءِ ٱلۡجَحِيمِ

55. So he looks (down) and sees him in the midst of the Hell.

56 : 37

قَالَ تَٱللَّهِ إِن كِدتَّ لَتُرۡدِينِ

56. He will say: "By Allāh, you almost ruined me;

57 : 37

وَلَوۡلَا نِعۡمَةُ رَبِّي لَكُنتُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُحۡضَرِينَ

57. Had it not been for the blessing of (Allāh) my Lord, I would have been among those brought forth (to Hell)."

58 : 37

أَفَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَيِّتِينَ

58. "Is it then that we are not going to die,

59 : 37

إِلَّا مَوۡتَتَنَا ٱلۡأُولَىٰ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمُعَذَّبِينَ

59. Except for our first death? And we will not be punished?"

60 : 37

إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ ٱلۡفَوۡزُ ٱلۡعَظِيمُ

60. Indeed, this surely (is) the great attainment.

61 : 37

لِمِثۡلِ هَٰذَا فَلۡيَعۡمَلِ ٱلۡعَٰمِلُونَ

61. For the like of this, then, let the workers work.

62 : 37

أَذَٰلِكَ خَيۡرٞ نُّزُلًا أَمۡ شَجَرَةُ ٱلزَّقُّومِ

62.Is that (Paradise) is better as accommodation or the (hellish) tree of Zaqqum?

63 : 37

إِنَّا جَعَلۡنَٰهَا فِتۡنَةٗ لِّلظَّٰلِمِينَ

63. Indeed, We have made it (this tree) a trial for the wrongdoers.

64 : 37

إِنَّهَا شَجَرَةٞ تَخۡرُجُ فِيٓ أَصۡلِ ٱلۡجَحِيمِ

64. Indeed, it is a tree that grows in the bottom of the Hell;

65 : 37

طَلۡعُهَا كَأَنَّهُۥ رُءُوسُ ٱلشَّيَٰطِينِ

65. Its emerging fruit is as if it was heads of the devils ^[7].

[7]. Another meaning: "Its emerging fruit are like the heads of Cobras serpents, 'extremely ugly disgusting to eat, harming others, harms one's own self'."

66 : 37

فَإِنَّهُمۡ لَأٓكِلُونَ مِنۡهَا فَمَالِـُٔونَ مِنۡهَا ٱلۡبُطُونَ

66. They will surely eat of it and fill (their) bellies therewith.

67 : 37

ثُمَّ إِنَّ لَهُمۡ عَلَيۡهَا لَشَوۡبٗا مِّنۡ حَمِيمٖ

67. Then indeed, above all this, they will have a mixture of scalding water.

68 : 37

ثُمَّ إِنَّ مَرۡجِعَهُمۡ لَإِلَى ٱلۡجَحِيمِ

68. Then indeed, their return will surely be to the Hell.

69 : 37

إِنَّهُمۡ أَلۡفَوۡاْ ءَابَآءَهُمۡ ضَآلِّينَ

69. Indeed, they found their fathers astray,

70 : 37

فَهُمۡ عَلَىٰٓ ءَاثَٰرِهِمۡ يُهۡرَعُونَ

70. So they rushed to follow in their footsteps.

71 : 37

وَلَقَدۡ ضَلَّ قَبۡلَهُمۡ أَكۡثَرُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ

71. And indeed, most of the ancients went astray before them,

72 : 37

وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا فِيهِم مُّنذِرِينَ

72. And indeed, We had sent among them warners (but they denied).

73 : 37

فَٱنظُرۡ كَيۡفَ كَانَ عَٰقِبَةُ ٱلۡمُنذَرِينَ

73. See then how was the end of those who were warned,

74 : 37

إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِينَ

74. Except the sincere servants of Allāh.

75 : 37

وَلَقَدۡ نَادَىٰنَا نُوحٞ فَلَنِعۡمَ ٱلۡمُجِيبُونَ

75. And indeed, Noah called out to Us, and Excellent (are We as) Responders (to prayer).

76 : 37

وَنَجَّيۡنَٰهُ وَأَهۡلَهُۥ مِنَ ٱلۡكَرۡبِ ٱلۡعَظِيمِ

76. And We delivered him and his family from the great affliction (of the flood).

77 : 37

وَجَعَلۡنَا ذُرِّيَّتَهُۥ هُمُ ٱلۡبَاقِينَ

77. And We made his descendants the only survivors.

78 : 37

وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ فِي ٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ

78. And We left for him (favourable mention) among later generations.

79 : 37

سَلَٰمٌ عَلَىٰ نُوحٖ فِي ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ

79. Peace and salutation to Noah among the worlds (i.e., peoples)

80 : 37

إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجۡزِي ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ

80. Thus do We reward the good-doers.

81 : 37

إِنَّهُۥ مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ

81. Indeed, He was of Our faithful servants.

82 : 37

ثُمَّ أَغۡرَقۡنَا ٱلۡأٓخَرِينَ

82. Then We drowned the others.

83 : 37

۞ وَإِنَّ مِن شِيعَتِهِۦ لَإِبۡرَٰهِيمَ

83. And indeed of his sect was surely Abraham,

84 : 37

إِذۡ جَآءَ رَبَّهُۥ بِقَلۡبٖ سَلِيمٍ

84. As he came to his Lord (Allāh) with a sound and pure heart ^[8],

[8]. The sound heart owner, is satisfied with the divine destiny, and Allāh is pleased with him. They have a tranquil and trusting spirit, with confidence and a hopeful heart.

85 : 37

إِذۡ قَالَ لِأَبِيهِ وَقَوۡمِهِۦ مَاذَا تَعۡبُدُونَ

85. When he said to his father and his people: "What are you worshiping?"

86 : 37

أَئِفۡكًا ءَالِهَةٗ دُونَ ٱللَّهِ تُرِيدُونَ

86. Is it falsehood - deities other than Allāh - (that) you desire?

87 : 37

فَمَا ظَنُّكُم بِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ

87. What is then your thought about (Allāh) Lord of the worlds?

88 : 37

فَنَظَرَ نَظۡرَةٗ فِي ٱلنُّجُومِ

88. So he glanced a glance at the stars,

89 : 37

فَقَالَ إِنِّي سَقِيمٞ

89. And said: "Indeed, I am sick ^[9]."

[9]. It was narrated that Abraham (peace be upon him) did not tell a lie except on three occasions, twice for the sake of Allāh (Exalted and Almighty) when he said: “I am sick,” (when his people were holding a festival in honor of their idols, Abraham excused himself by saying he was sick, and when he said: “(I have not done this but) the big idol has done it.” The (third was) that while Ibraham and Sara (his wife) were going (on a journey), they passed by (the territory of) a tyrant. Someone said to the tyrant: “This man (i.e., Abraham) is accompanied by a very charming lady.” So, he sent for Abraham and asked him about Sara saying: “Who is this lady?” Abraham said: “She is my sister.”
This is not from real lying statements, but from ambiguous statements. The word “he did not lie” has been used metaphorically.
Some say, “saqim” means afflicted with plague. The people of that time were afraid of the plague, so he used this word for them to turn away from him. Some say, it means, a spiritually ill person, from your worshipping the idols other than Allāh.

90 : 37

فَتَوَلَّوۡاْ عَنۡهُ مُدۡبِرِينَ

90. So they turned away from him, retreating.

91 : 37

فَرَاغَ إِلَىٰٓ ءَالِهَتِهِمۡ فَقَالَ أَلَا تَأۡكُلُونَ

91. Then he turned to their gods (idols) and said (mockingly): "Will you not eat ^[10]?

[10]. Of the offerings before you.

92 : 37

مَا لَكُمۡ لَا تَنطِقُونَ

92. What is the matter with you that you do not utter (a word)?"

93 : 37

فَرَاغَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ ضَرۡبَۢا بِٱلۡيَمِينِ

93.Then he turned upon them, striking (them) with his right hand.

94 : 37

فَأَقۡبَلُوٓاْ إِلَيۡهِ يَزِفُّونَ

94. So they (the idol worshippers) advanced towards him, hastening.

95 : 37

قَالَ أَتَعۡبُدُونَ مَا تَنۡحِتُونَ

95. He (Abraham) said: "Do you worship what you carve out?

96 : 37

وَٱللَّهُ خَلَقَكُمۡ وَمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ

96. While Allāh has created you and what you make."

97 : 37

قَالُواْ ٱبۡنُواْ لَهُۥ بُنۡيَٰنٗا فَأَلۡقُوهُ فِي ٱلۡجَحِيمِ

97. They said: "Build for him a a structure, then cast him into the blazing fire."

98 : 37

فَأَرَادُواْ بِهِۦ كَيۡدٗا فَجَعَلۡنَٰهُمُ ٱلۡأَسۡفَلِينَ

98. So they intended for him a plot against him but We made them the lowest.

99 : 37

وَقَالَ إِنِّي ذَاهِبٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّي سَيَهۡدِينِ

99. And he (Abraham) said: "I am going to (migrate to Allāh) my Lord; He will guide me."

100 : 37

رَبِّ هَبۡ لِي مِنَ ٱلصَّٰلِحِينَ

100. Lord (Allāh), grant me one of the righteous."

101 : 37

فَبَشَّرۡنَٰهُ بِغُلَٰمٍ حَلِيمٖ

101. So We gave him the good news of a forbearing son (Ishmael).

102 : 37

فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ مَعَهُ ٱلسَّعۡيَ قَالَ يَٰبُنَيَّ إِنِّيٓ أَرَىٰ فِي ٱلۡمَنَامِ أَنِّيٓ أَذۡبَحُكَ فَٱنظُرۡ مَاذَا تَرَىٰۚ قَالَ يَٰٓأَبَتِ ٱفۡعَلۡ مَا تُؤۡمَرُۖ سَتَجِدُنِيٓ إِن شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ مِنَ ٱلصَّٰبِرِينَ

102. When (the son) reached (the age) to work with him, he (Abraham) said: "O my son, I have seen in a dream that I should sacrifice you; look then, what do you think." (Ishmael) said: "O my father, do what you are commanded; you will find me, if Allāh wills, of the patient."

103 : 37

فَلَمَّآ أَسۡلَمَا وَتَلَّهُۥ لِلۡجَبِينِ

103. So, when they both submitted (to the Command of Allāh), and he put him (Ishmael) down upon his brow (for sacrifice),

104 : 37

وَنَٰدَيۡنَٰهُ أَن يَٰٓإِبۡرَٰهِيمُ

104. And We called out to him (saying): "Abraham,

105 : 37

قَدۡ صَدَّقۡتَ ٱلرُّءۡيَآۚ إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجۡزِي ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ

105. You have already fulfilled the vision; surely thus do We reward the doers of good.

106 : 37

إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ ٱلۡبَلَٰٓؤُاْ ٱلۡمُبِينُ

106. Indeed, this is surely the manifest test.

107 : 37

وَفَدَيۡنَٰهُ بِذِبۡحٍ عَظِيمٖ

107. And We ransomed him (Ishmael) with a great sacrifice ^[11].

[11]. With that of a ram.

108 : 37

وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ فِي ٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ

108. And We left for him (favourable mention) among later generations.

109 : 37

سَلَٰمٌ عَلَىٰٓ إِبۡرَٰهِيمَ

109. Peace and salutation to Abraham.

110 : 37

كَذَٰلِكَ نَجۡزِي ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ

110. Thus do We reward the doers of good.

111 : 37

إِنَّهُۥ مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ

111. Indeed, He was of Our faithful servants.

112 : 37

وَبَشَّرۡنَٰهُ بِإِسۡحَٰقَ نَبِيّٗا مِّنَ ٱلصَّٰلِحِينَ

112. And (in time) We gave him the good news of Isaac, a prophet from among the righteous.

113 : 37

وَبَٰرَكۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ وَعَلَىٰٓ إِسۡحَٰقَۚ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِهِمَا مُحۡسِنٞ وَظَالِمٞ لِّنَفۡسِهِۦ مُبِينٞ

113. And We blessed him and Isaac. But among their descendants is the doer of good, and the openly unjust to himself.

114 : 37

وَلَقَدۡ مَنَنَّا عَلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ وَهَٰرُونَ

114. We certainly bestowed Our favor upon Moses and Aaron.

115 : 37

وَنَجَّيۡنَٰهُمَا وَقَوۡمَهُمَا مِنَ ٱلۡكَرۡبِ ٱلۡعَظِيمِ

115. And We delivered both of them and their people from the great distress ^[12].

[12]. i.e., Pharaoh’s enslavement of them.

116 : 37

وَنَصَرۡنَٰهُمۡ فَكَانُواْ هُمُ ٱلۡغَٰلِبِينَ

116. And We helped them, so they were the victorious.

117 : 37

وَءَاتَيۡنَٰهُمَا ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ ٱلۡمُسۡتَبِينَ

117. And We gave them both the clear Scripture.

118 : 37

وَهَدَيۡنَٰهُمَا ٱلصِّرَٰطَ ٱلۡمُسۡتَقِيمَ

118. And We guided both of them the straight Path (of Islam).

119 : 37

وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَيۡهِمَا فِي ٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ

119. And We left for them both (a favourable mention) among later generations.

120 : 37

سَلَٰمٌ عَلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ وَهَٰرُونَ

120. Peace (and blessings be) upon Moses and Aaron.

121 : 37

إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجۡزِي ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ

121. Indeed, thus do We reward the doers of good.

122 : 37

إِنَّهُمَا مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ

122. Indeed, they are both of Our faithful servants.

123 : 37

وَإِنَّ إِلۡيَاسَ لَمِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ

123. And indeed, Ilyas (Elijah) is surely one of the messengers (of Allāh).

124 : 37

إِذۡ قَالَ لِقَوۡمِهِۦٓ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ

124. When he said to his people: "Will you not fear (Allāh, and shun evil)?

125 : 37

أَتَدۡعُونَ بَعۡلٗا وَتَذَرُونَ أَحۡسَنَ ٱلۡخَٰلِقِينَ

125. Do you invoke Ba’al (an idol), and forsake the Best of creators,

126 : 37

ٱللَّهَ رَبَّكُمۡ وَرَبَّ ءَابَآئِكُمُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ

126. Allāh, your Lord (all) and Lord of your earliest forefathers?

127 : 37

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَإِنَّهُمۡ لَمُحۡضَرُونَ

127. So they denied him, then surely they will certainly be brought (to the Hell).

128 : 37

إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِينَ

128. Except the sincere servants of Allāh.

129 : 37

وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ فِي ٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ

129. And We left (favourable mention) for him among later generations.

130 : 37

سَلَٰمٌ عَلَىٰٓ إِلۡ يَاسِينَ

130. Peace (and salutation) be) upon Ilyas (Elijah).

131 : 37

إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجۡزِي ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ

131. Indeed, thus do We reward the doers of good.

132 : 37

إِنَّهُۥ مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ

132. He is surely one of Our faithful servants.

133 : 37

وَإِنَّ لُوطٗا لَّمِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ

133. And indeed, Lot is one of the messengers (of Allāh).

134 : 37

إِذۡ نَجَّيۡنَٰهُ وَأَهۡلَهُۥٓ أَجۡمَعِينَ

134. When We delivered him and his family all -

135 : 37

إِلَّا عَجُوزٗا فِي ٱلۡغَٰبِرِينَ

135. Except an old woman ^[13] among those who lagged behind (with the evildoers).

[13]. Lot’s wife, who was a disbeliever.

136 : 37

ثُمَّ دَمَّرۡنَا ٱلۡأٓخَرِينَ

136. Then We destroyed the others.

137 : 37

وَإِنَّكُمۡ لَتَمُرُّونَ عَلَيۡهِم مُّصۡبِحِينَ

137. And indeed, you (pagans) pass by (their ruined town) in the morning,

138 : 37

وَبِٱلَّيۡلِۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ

138. And (at) night. Will you not then use your reason?

139 : 37

وَإِنَّ يُونُسَ لَمِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ

139. And indeed, Yunus (Jonah) is certainly one of the messenger (of Allāh).

140 : 37

إِذۡ أَبَقَ إِلَى ٱلۡفُلۡكِ ٱلۡمَشۡحُونِ

140. When he fled to the laden ship,

141 : 37

فَسَاهَمَ فَكَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُدۡحَضِينَ

141. Then he (agreed to) drew lots, and was among the losers ^[14].

[14]. And was thrown into the sea.

142 : 37

فَٱلۡتَقَمَهُ ٱلۡحُوتُ وَهُوَ مُلِيمٞ

142. So the whale gobbled him, while he was blameworthy.

143 : 37

فَلَوۡلَآ أَنَّهُۥ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُسَبِّحِينَ

143. Had it not been that he was of those who glorify (Allāh),

144 : 37

لَلَبِثَ فِي بَطۡنِهِۦٓ إِلَىٰ يَوۡمِ يُبۡعَثُونَ

144. He would have certainly remained in its (whale's) belly to the Day when they are resurrected.

145 : 37

۞ فَنَبَذۡنَٰهُ بِٱلۡعَرَآءِ وَهُوَ سَقِيمٞ

145. But We cast him onto the open shore while he was ill ^[15].

[15]. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said: “Feed the hungry, visit the sick and free the captives.”
He also said, “There is no one who visits a (sick) person in the morning but seventy thousand angels send blessings upon him until evening comes, and if he visits him in the evening, seventy thousand angels send blessings upon him until morning comes.”

146 : 37

وَأَنۢبَتۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ شَجَرَةٗ مِّن يَقۡطِينٖ

146. And We caused to grow over him a tree of gourds ^[16].

[16]. For its cooling shade and as food for him.

147 : 37

وَأَرۡسَلۡنَٰهُ إِلَىٰ مِاْئَةِ أَلۡفٍ أَوۡ يَزِيدُونَ

147. And We sent him to a hundred thousand, or more people.

148 : 37

فَـَٔامَنُواْ فَمَتَّعۡنَٰهُمۡ إِلَىٰ حِينٖ

148. So they believed, then We let them enjoy (life) for a while.

149 : 37

فَٱسۡتَفۡتِهِمۡ أَلِرَبِّكَ ٱلۡبَنَاتُ وَلَهُمُ ٱلۡبَنُونَ

149. So, ask them (O Muhammad) are for your Lord the daughters (as they claim), while for them (are) sons ^[17]?

[17]. The pagans claimed that angels were Allah’s daughters, while preferring sons for themselves.



   

150 : 37

أَمۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةَ إِنَٰثٗا وَهُمۡ شَٰهِدُونَ

150. Or did We create the angels females and they are witnesses (thereto)?

151 : 37

أَلَآ إِنَّهُم مِّنۡ إِفۡكِهِمۡ لَيَقُولُونَ

151. Undoubtedly, they out of their lie, they indeed say:

152 : 37

وَلَدَ ٱللَّهُ وَإِنَّهُمۡ لَكَٰذِبُونَ

152. "Allāh has begotten." And indeed, they are surely liars.

153 : 37

أَصۡطَفَى ٱلۡبَنَاتِ عَلَى ٱلۡبَنِينَ

153. Has He chosen daughters over sons?

154 : 37

مَا لَكُمۡ كَيۡفَ تَحۡكُمُونَ

154. What is the matter with you, how do you judge ^[18]?

[18]. That God has children - the angels being His daughters, and choose for you the sons?

155 : 37

أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ

155. Will you not then be mindful?

156 : 37

أَمۡ لَكُمۡ سُلۡطَٰنٞ مُّبِينٞ

156. Or do you (pagans) have a clear authority?

157 : 37

فَأۡتُواْ بِكِتَٰبِكُمۡ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَٰدِقِينَ

157. Then bring your scripture, if you are truthful.

158 : 37

وَجَعَلُواْ بَيۡنَهُۥ وَبَيۡنَ ٱلۡجِنَّةِ نَسَبٗاۚ وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمَتِ ٱلۡجِنَّةُ إِنَّهُمۡ لَمُحۡضَرُونَ

158. And they have made between Him and between the Jinn a kinship. Yet the Jinn indeed know that they (who make such a claim) will be surely brought forth (to the Punishment of Hell).

159 : 37

سُبۡحَٰنَ ٱللَّهِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ

159. Glory be to Allāh, (He is Exalted, above) what they describe.

160 : 37

إِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِينَ

160. Except the sincere servants of Allāh ^[19].

[19]. Who do not share in that sin.

161 : 37

فَإِنَّكُمۡ وَمَا تَعۡبُدُونَ

161. Then indeed you (pagans) and whatever you worship,

162 : 37

مَآ أَنتُمۡ عَلَيۡهِ بِفَٰتِنِينَ

162. Cannot mislead anyone,

163 : 37

إِلَّا مَنۡ هُوَ صَالِ ٱلۡجَحِيمِ

163. Except he who is bound to (enter and) burn in the Hellfire.

164 : 37

وَمَا مِنَّآ إِلَّا لَهُۥ مَقَامٞ مَّعۡلُومٞ

164. (The angels say), and there is none of us but has a known station,

165 : 37

وَإِنَّا لَنَحۡنُ ٱلصَّآفُّونَ

165. We are indeed those who stand in ranks 'for Allāh',

166 : 37

وَإِنَّا لَنَحۡنُ ٱلۡمُسَبِّحُونَ

166. and indeed, we are those who glorify (Allāh)."

167 : 37

وَإِن كَانُواْ لَيَقُولُونَ

167. And indeed, they (the pagans) used to say:

168 : 37

لَوۡ أَنَّ عِندَنَا ذِكۡرٗا مِّنَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ

168."If only we had a Reminder (Scripture) from the former (people),

169 : 37

لَكُنَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِينَ

169. We would have been the sincere servants of Allāh."

170 : 37

فَكَفَرُواْ بِهِۦۖ فَسَوۡفَ يَعۡلَمُونَ

170. Yet they disbelieved in it (the Qur’an), so they will soon come to know ^[20].

[20]. The consequences of their disbelif of the Qur’an and the Prophet Muhammad.

171 : 37

وَلَقَدۡ سَبَقَتۡ كَلِمَتُنَا لِعِبَادِنَا ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ

171. And our Word (Decree) has already preceded for Our servants, the messengers,

172 : 37

إِنَّهُمۡ لَهُمُ ٱلۡمَنصُورُونَ

172. Indeed that they are surely the helped ones.

173 : 37

وَإِنَّ جُندَنَا لَهُمُ ٱلۡغَٰلِبُونَ

173. And Indeed that Our host are surely the triumphant ones.

174 : 37

فَتَوَلَّ عَنۡهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ حِينٖ

174. So turn away from them (the deniers) til a time,

175 : 37

وَأَبۡصِرۡهُمۡ فَسَوۡفَ يُبۡصِرُونَ

175. And see (what will befall) them, then they too will see.

176 : 37

أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا يَسۡتَعۡجِلُونَ

176. Is it for Our torment that they seek to hasten?

177 : 37

فَإِذَا نَزَلَ بِسَاحَتِهِمۡ فَسَآءَ صَبَاحُ ٱلۡمُنذَرِينَ

177. When it ^[21] descends into their territory, then evil is the morning of those who were warned.

[21]. I.e., God’s punishment.

178 : 37

وَتَوَلَّ عَنۡهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ حِينٖ

178. So turn away from them (the deniers) til a time,

179 : 37

وَأَبۡصِرۡ فَسَوۡفَ يُبۡصِرُونَ

179. And see, then they (too) will see.

180 : 37

سُبۡحَٰنَ رَبِّكَ رَبِّ ٱلۡعِزَّةِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ

180. Glory be to your Lord ^[22], Lord of might, above what they describe.

[22]. Glorify Allāh, the Lord of Abraham, Noah, Moses, Jesus, Muhammad, the Lord of all the messengers of God, Lord of all the creation.

181 : 37

وَسَلَٰمٌ عَلَى ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ

181. And Peace be upon the messengers (of Allāh).

182 : 37

وَٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ

182. And all Praise be to Allāh, Lord of the worlds.
