1.The Qur’an is made up of such letters from the Arabic alphabet. The Arabs at the time of revelation were the unmatched masters of the Arabic language and yet when challenged were totally unable to bring anything like the Qur’an. Although these disjointed Arabic letters are referring to the inimitable nature of the Qur’an and its divine source, God knows best its meaning.
3. Who believe in the unseen², keep up the prayer3 and give in charity (a part) of what We4 have provided for them.
2. Such as the Existence of God, angels, jinn, life after death, Paradise and Hell, etc.
3.Keeping up the Prayer, entails performing it punctually and devoutly, observing the manner set forth by the Prophet, who said: “Pray as you have seen me Pray”.
4. It is to be noted that the reference of Allāh to Himself as "We or Us" in many Qur’ānic verses is necessarily understood in the Arabic language to denote grandeur and power, as opposed to the more intimate singular form "I" used in specific instances. This is the “royal” We or Us. In English, its called the plural of majesty.
This syntax is used, both in the English and Arabic languages, by emperors, kings and queens. “We, the Emperor of …, grant amnesty to …”. And to Allah is the best example. He is the King of all kings. He is the Sovereign. To Him belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth.
4. Who believe in what is sent down to you (Muhammad)5 and in what was sent down before you6, and are certain of the (life of the) Hereafter.
5. Of the Qur’an and the Sunnah - the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him). It includes everything he said, did, and approved of.
Muhammad, God's Messenger said: "Beware, I have been given the Qur'an and something similar to it along with it, yet the time is coming when a man replete on his couch will say: Keep to the Qur'an; what you find in it to be permissible treat as permissible, and what you find in it to be prohibited treat as prohibited. But indeed, whatever the Messenger of Allāh forbids is like what Allāh forbids.”
6. Of the Torah, the Gospel, the Psalms, etc.
10. There is sickness (of doubt) in their hearts, and Allāh 'only' lets their sickness increase. They 'the hypocrites' will have a painful torment for their persistent lying.
13. When they are told to believe as the (other) people (i.e., followers of Prophet Muhammad) believed, they say: "Shall we believe as the fools8 believe?" They are the fools, but they do not know.
8. For the acceptance of the Truth is foolishness for the hypocrites, to those who are perishing, but to the Muslims who surrender to the will of God and are pure and saved it is the message of love and mercy from God.
14. When they (the hypocrites) meet those who believe (in Allāh and His messenger Muhammad), they say: We believe (also); but when they are alone with their devils (leaders of Jewish and pagans), they say: "We are with you, we were only mocking."
17. Their example is like that of one who kindles a fire, but when it illuminates all around him, Allāh takes away their light, leaving them in utter darkness, (so) they could not see.
19. Or (it is) like a downpour from the sky* in which there is utter darkness, thunder, and lightning; they put their fingers in their ears against the thunderclaps for fear of death. But Allāh encompasses the deniers.
* Allāh gave another example of the condition of the hypocrites with the Qur’an and Islam. It is like heavy rain descended upon people in a desert, a downpour accompanied by dense darkness, thunder, and lightning. This prompted them to put their fingers in their ears due to fear of perdition, trying to avoid danger in a way that does not protect them from it. This is the case with the hypocrites when the Qur’an is revealed and hear what's in it of the warnings, they would deafen their ears so they would not benefit from its warning. They would not believe in the truth of the verses of the Qur’an, nor abandon the falsehood. Their admonition in the Qur’an and how it reveals their truth are akin to deafening thunderclaps penetrating their eardrums. Allāh encompasses the deniers with His knowledge and power, so they cannot escape Him or cause Him failure.
20. The lightning almost snatches away their sight. Whenever it lights (the way) for them they walk therein, but when it is dark, they 'the hypocrites' stand still 'confused'*. Had Allāh willed, He could certainly have taken away their hearing and their sight. Indeed, Allāh has full Power over all things.
* This is the case with the hypocrites. Whenever their wealth increases and their children, they say: The religion of Islam is truth from God, and they remain steadfast in it for a little while. But if a calamity befalls them or loss, they return to disbelief, and say this is because of the religion of Muhammad, which they followed, and had it not been for God’s respite and grace to them, these people would have been robbed of their hearing and sight, so it will not be returned to them because of their false following and turning away from the truth, and Allāh has the power to do that at any time He wishes.
22. He 'Allah is' Who made the earth a floor for you and the sky a dome, and sends down water from the sky then brings forth with it the fruits for your sustenance. So do not knowingly set up equals to Allāh9.
9. A companion of the Prophet said, i asked the prophet Muhammad, "What is the greatest sin in the sight of Allāh?" He said, "That you set up an equal unto Allāh though He Alone created you." I said, "That is indeed a grave sin." Then I asked, "What is next?" He said "To kill your child lest he should share your food with you." I asked, "What is next?" He said, "To commit adultery with the wife of your neighbour.".
23. Should you 'o deniers' have any doubt as to that which We have revealed (of the Qur’an) to Our servant (Muhammad), then produce a Chapter like it and call 'for help' your 'deities and' aides apart from Allāh, if you are truthful*.
* In your claim that Muhammad is the author of the Qur’an'.
25. Give good news to those who believe and do righteous deeds, that they will have Gardens under which rivers flow. Whenever they are given a provision of fruit therefrom, they will say: "This is what was provided to us before." They will be given fruits resembling each other (but different in taste). They will have purified spouses therein, and they will abide therein forever.
26. Allāh does not shy away to set forth an example - (even that of) a mosquito or anything above that (or smaller). As for those who believe, they know that it is the Truth from their Lord 'Allāh', but as for those who deny (the Truth), they say: "What does Allāh intend by such an example?" He misleads many by it and many He guides by it. But He does not mislead by it (any) except the rebellious -
27. Those who break their established Covenant with Allāh and sever the relations that Allāh has commanded to be kept11, and who spread evil in the land. These are the losers.
11. The Prophet Muhammad said, "The person who severs the bond of kinship will not enter Paradise".
28. How dare you deny Allāh and you were dead12 and He gave you life, then He will cause you to die, then bring you back to life again (at the Resurrection), then you shall (all) be returned to Him (for Judgment)?.
12. These are the cycles of life and death that humans go through: seeds in the loins of men, creation and birth, death, being brought to life at resurrection and being held accountable for one’s deeds.
29. It is He 'Allāh' Who created for you, all that is in the earth, then He turned towards the heaven and made them seven heavens. He is All-Knowing of everything.
30. When your Lord 'Allāh' said to the angels, "I am going to place in the earth a successive authority13. They said: "Will You place in it who makes mischief therein and sheds blood, while we glorify You with praises and sanctify You?" (Allāh) said: "I know what you do not know."
31. He 'Allāh' taught Adam the names of all 'things', then presented them to the angels; and said: "Tell me the names of these beings, if what you say is true?"
33. 'Allāh' said: Adam, "Inform them of their names." When he had informed them of their names, He said: "Did I not say to you that I know the unseen in the heavens and the earth and I know what you reveal or conceal?"
34. When We said to the angels: "Prostrate to Adam," so they prostrated except Iblees (Satan) who abstained out of pride and so he became an ingrate and denier.
35. We said: "Adam, dwell you and your wife in the Garden, and eat therefrom in (ease and) abundance wherever you wish, but do not approach this tree, lest you transgress.
36. But Satan caused them to slip from it, and get them out of that (state) in which they were. 'Allāh' said: "Descend, you are each other's enemies. There is for you in the earth an abode, and a provision for a time."
37. Then Adam received words (to seek forgiveness) from his Lord, so He accepted his repentance (and forgave him). He 'Allāh' is the Accepter of repentance, the Most Merciful.
38. We said: "Descend from it (the Paradise), all of you 'Adam, Eve and Satan'. There will certainly come to you guidance from Me, so whoever follows My guidance, no fear shall come upon them, nor shall they grieve.
40. Children of Israel, recall My favors which I bestowed on you, and fulfill (your) covenant with Me, I will fulfill (My) Covenant with you; and revere only Me.
41. Believe in what I have revealed (of the Qur’an) confirming that which is with you and be not the first to deny it. Do not sell my Verses for a small price, and have fear of Me alone.
43. Keep up the prayer, pay the poor-rate, and bow down (in prayer) with those who bow down (i.e., the Muslims)14.
14. Congregational prayer is obligatory for all men in the mosque . It is not permissible for a man who is able to attend the congregational prayer in the mosque to pray in his house even if he prays in congregation with his family.
the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said: “Whoever hears the call to prayer and does not come, there is no prayer for him [i.e., his prayer is not valid], unless he has an excuse. It was asked the companion of the prophet, what is an excuse? He said, Fear or sickness.
45. Seek help through patience15 and prayer, and it is hard except for the humble.
15. The Children of Israel who were hindered from belief out of greed and love of the world. They are commanded to seek help in patience, i.e. fasting, which dents wantonness, and Prayer because it leads to humbleness and expels haughtiness.
48. Guard yourselves against a Day when a person will not avail another in the least, neither will intercession on his behalf be accepted, nor will any ransom be taken from him, nor will they be helped.
49. (Recall) when We delivered you from Pharaoh’s people who subjected you to severe torment, slaughtering your sons and sparing your women (for servitude), and in this there was a great trial from your Lord.
54. When Moses said to his people, “O my people, Surely you have wronged yourselves by worshipping the calf, so turn in repentance to your Creator and execute ˹the calf-worshippers among˺ yourselves. That is best for you in the sight of your Creator.” Then He accepted your repentance. Surely He is the Accepter of Repentance, the Most Merciful.”
55. When you 'Israelites' argued with Moses, saying, "We shall not believe in you until we see Allāh manifestly", so the thunderbolt overtook you while you were looking on.
57. We shaded you with clouds, and sent down to you manna and quails, 'saying': "Eat of the good things that We provided for you." They did not harm Us, but they harmed their own souls.
58. (Recall) when We said: "Enter this town (Jerusalem), and eat from it a plenteous (food) wherever you wish, and enter the gate bowing (with humility), and say we ask forgiveness (from You, O Allāh). We shall forgive you your wrongdoings and give more to the good-doers."
59. But those who were unjust changed it for a saying other than that which had been told*, so We sent on those who were unjust a plague from the sky for their obstinate disobedience.
* To do and say, and entered it dragging themselves on their rears, saying, ‘A grain in a hair, instead of 'forgive us of our sins’, mocking Allah’s command. So God punished them because of their disobedience to Him with a plague from the sky, by which seventy thousand of them died.
60. When Moses prayed for (water to) drink for his people, We said: "Strike the rock with your staff," so there gushed from it twelve springs. Each tribe knew its drinking place: "Eat and drink of Allah's provision, and do not act corruptly in the land making mischief."
61. (Recall) when you said: "Moses, we no longer have patience with only one kind of food, so ask 'Allāh' your Lord to bring forth for us out of what the earth grows of its green herbs, cucumbers, garlic, lentils and onions." (Moses) said: "Would you exchange what is better for what is less?" Go to any town, so you will have what you ask for. Abasement and humiliation were brought down upon them, and they became deserving of God’s Wrath. This was so because they denied the revelations of Allāh, and killed the Prophets unjustly. This was so because they disobeyed and used to transgress.
62. The believers (of this nation), and those who were Jews, or Nazarenes, or Sabians (before the Prophet Muḥammad) whoever believed in Allāh and the Last Day and acted righteously, they shall have their reward from 'Allāh' their Lord, on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.
63. (Recall) when We took your covenant (children of Israel) and raised the Mount (Sinai) over you (and said): "Take hold of the Law (Torah) We have given you with determination and bear in mind what is in it, so that you may guard against evil."
67. (Recall) when Moses said to his people: "Allāh commands you that you should slaughter a cow17. They said: "Do you mock us?" (Moses) said: "I seek refuge by Allāh, that I should be an ignorant."
17. As atonement for an unsolved murder. The slaughter of the cow was also intended to cut off their hearts from the love of worshiping the calf. The problem wasn't only the murder, but their idolatry.
68. They said: "Ask your Lord 'Allāh' to describe to us what type (of cow) it is." Moses said: He says, "It is a cow neither too old, nor too young, but middle aged between the two; so do what you are commanded."
69. They said: "Ask your Lord to describe to us what its color is." Moses said: He says, "It is a yellow cow; bright in color - pleasing to the beholders."
70. They said: "Ask your Lord to describe to us what exactly it is. Indeed, all cows look alike to us. If Allāh wills, we shall certainly be guided aright."
71. Moses said: "He says, it is a cow neither trained to plow the earth, nor to irrigate the field; sound, without a blemish." They said: "Now you have given us the right description; so they slaughtered it, though they almost did not do so."
73. We said: "Strike him (i.e., the slain man) with part of the (slaughtered cow)". Thus Allāh brings the dead to life, and shows you His signs so that you may understand.
74. Thereafter, your hearts turned as hard as stones or even harder; for there are some rocks from which streams gush forth. There are some rocks which split asunder so water flows out of them, and there are others which fall down in Awe to Allāh. Allāh is not unaware of what you do.
75. Do you 'believers' then hope that they [the Jews] would believe in you, and a party from among them indeed used to hear the Words of God, then they would knowingly distort it after they had understood it.
76. When they 'the Jewish hypocrites' meet those who believe (the Muslims), they say: "We believe (also)", but when they return to their chiefs, they rebuke them saying: "How would you tell them of what Allāh has opened up (revealed) to you18 that they may use it as evidence against you before your Lord? Have you then no sense?"
18. In the Bible about the truthfulness of Prophet Muhammad.
78. Among them (the Jews) are unlearned ones who have no real knowledge about the Scripture but only its recitation 'and lies they received from their leaders', and they follow only conjectures19.
19. About the prophet Muhammad, despite his characteristics being mentioned in the Bible.
79. So woe to those who distort the Scripture with their hands, and then say: "This is from Allāh," so that they may barter for it a small price. Woe to them for what their hands have written, and woe to them for what they earn.
80. ˹Some of˺ the Jews claim, "The Fire will not touch us except for a limited number of days." Say: "Have you received a Promise from Allāh, then Allāh will not break His promise, or do you speak about Allāh without knowledge?
81. No doubt, whoever commits evil 'idolatry' and is surrounded by his sins, these are the occupants of the Hellfire - they will abide therein forever.
83. We made a Covenant with the children of Israel 'commanding': Worship none but Allāh, honor your parents, 'do good to' your relatives, orphans, and the destitute. Speak kindly to people, be steadfast in your prayers and pay the poor-rate, then you turned away heedlessly except a few of you.
84. We took your pledge that you should not shed each other’s blood, or expel each other from your homeland. You acknowledged and bore witness (to this).
85. Yet it is you who kill one another and expel a party from among you out of their homeland, rallying against them in sin and transgression, but if they come to you as captives you ransom them - while their expelling out (of their homeland) was unlawful for you. Do you then believe in a part of the Scripture and deny the other? What then is the recompense of such among you as do this except disgrace in the life of this world, and on the Day of Resurrection they will be sent back to the most grievous torment? For Allāh is not unaware of what you do.
86.These are the ones who have bought the life of this world (in exchange) for the Hereafter, so their torment will not be eased nor will they be helped.
87. We certainly gave Moses the Scripture and sent messengers after him one after another, and gave Jesus, the son of Mary, clear Signs and strengthened him by the holy spirit (the angel Gabriel). Is it not so that whenever a messenger comes to you with that which your selves do not desire, you become disdainful, denying some of them, and killing others?
88. They say: "Our hearts are covered (against reception of Allah's Word)." Nay, but Allāh 'God' has cursed them for their disbelief; so little it is that they believe.
89. When there came to them a Book 'Qur’an' from Allāh confirming that which they have, although before it they used to pray for victory against the pagans (by the expectance of the coming of Prophet Muhammad), but when there came to them that which they recognized, they denied him; so Allah's Curse is on the deniers.
90. Miserable is that for which they have sold themselves - denying what Allāh has sent down 'of revelation', out of envy that Allāh sends down of His bounty on whomsoever of His servants He wills. So they have made themselves deserving of Wrath20 upon Wrath21. There is a disgraceful torment for the deniers.
20. Because of their disbelieving in the Qur’an.
21. Because of their disbelieving in the Torah before and for their previous sins.
91. When they are told: "Believe in what Allāh has revealed (of the Qur'an)," they say: "We believe (only) in that which was sent down to us 'of revelation';" and they deny in that which comes after it, while it is the Truth confirming their own 'original' Scripture. Say: "Why then were you slaying God’s Prophets before, if you were indeed believers?"
93. When We made a covenant with you and raised mount (Sinai) over you (saying): "Take hold of what We have given you (of the Torah) with determination and be obedient." They said: "We hear and disobey." They were made to absorb (the love of) the calf into their hearts, because of their going back on their Covenant and because of their faithlessness. Say: "Evil is what your faith commands you, if you should be believers."
94. Say: "If the Home of the Hereafter with Allāh is especially for you (Jews, as you assume) to the exclusion of the rest of the people, then long for death, if you are truthful."
96. You will certainly find them (the Jews) the greediest of all men for life, even more than the pagans. Each one of them wishes that he gladly live for a thousand years, but his being granted a long life will in no way remove him further away from the torment. For Allāh sees what they do.
97. Say: "Whoever is the enemy of Gabriel - then (know that) he brought it (this Qur’an) down upon your heart by Allah’s Will, as a confirmation of (original) Scripture, and as guide and good news for the believers.
101. When a messenger of Allāh came to them confirming what was with them (of revelation), a party of those who were given the Scripture (i.e., Jews), threw the Book of God behind their backs, as if they knew nothing22.
22. What it said about believing in the Messenger of God, the Prophet Muhammad and the Qur’an.
102. They followed (instead) what the devils had falsely related about the kingdom of Solomon. Yet Solomon did not disbelieve (practice sorcery), but the devils disbelieved, teaching people sorcery and that which was sent down to the two angels23 at Babylon, Harut and Marut. These two taught it no one until they said: "We are only a trial (for you), so do not disbelieve." People learned from these two, black magic by which they might cause separation between a man and his wife; but they cannot hurt anyone with it except by God's permission, and they learned what harmed them and did not benefit them, and certainly they know that he who engage in witchcraft would have no share (of good) in the Hereafter. Wretched is the price for which they sold themselves, if they only knew.
23. A variant reading has al-malikayn, "the two kings" who were in Babylon - Harut and Marut - here the names stand for the two angels or the two kings.
103. If only they (the Jews) had believed and guarded 'themselves gainst evil', they would have received better reward from Allāh 'God'; if they only knew.
104. O believers, do not (imitate the deniers and) say (to God's messenger): Ra’ina (words of ambiguity), but say: Unthurna (words of respect) and listen (to what is recited of the Qur’an). For the deniers there is a painful torment24.
24. In this Verse there is evidence of severe prohibition to imitate the pagans and the deniers in their words and actions, their dress, their festivals, their worship and other matters that were not prescribed for us or approved by Islam.
105. Those who deny (the Truth) from among the followers of the (earlier) Scripture (i.e., Jews and Christians) and the pagans do not like that any good thing should be sent down to you (believers) from your Lord. But Allāh assigns His mercy to whom He wills. For Allāh is the possessor of great bounty.
106. Whatever revelation (even a single Verse) We abrogate or cause to be forgotten, We bring one better than it or like it. Do you not know that Allāh has full Power over all things?
108. Or do you want to ask your messenger (Muhammad) as Moses was asked before? Whoever exchanges faith for disbelief, has indeed strayed from the right Path (of Islam).
109. Many of the followers of the (earlier) Scripture (Jews and Christians) wish that they could turn you back into deniers after your Faith, out of envy from themselves, (even) after the Truth has become manifest to them. Pardon and bear with them until Allāh brings about His command "of fighting them". Indeed Allāh has full Power over all things.
110. Keep up the prayer and pay the poor-rate. Whatever good you send forth for yourselves you shall find it with Allāh. Indeed, Allāh sees what you do25.
25. Believers are commanded to turn their attention away from fruitless arguments and concentrate on matters that are more rewarding and ascertaining of Faith.
111. They say: "None shall enter Paradise except those who are Jews or Nazarenes." These are their vain desires. Say: "Bring your proof, if you are truthful."
112. No doubt, whoever submits himself entirely to Allāh, while being a doer of good will have his reward from his Lord, there is no fear on them, nor shall they grieve.
113. The Jews say: "The Nazarenes have no valid ground (for their beliefs)," and the Nazarenes say: "The Jews have no valid ground (for their beliefs)," while they both quote the (same) Scripture26. Similarly, those who have no knowledge (i.e., the pagans) say the like of what they say. Allāh shall judge between them on the Day of Resurrection in all what they differ.
26. When the Christians of Najrān came to Muhammad, the Messenger of God (ﷺ), the rabbis met them and both parties disputed in the Messenger’s (ﷺ) presence. A Jewish rabbi said: “You ˹Christians˺ have no ground whatsoever!” He Denied Jesus and the Evangel! A Najranian said: “You have no ground whatsoever!” He Denied both the Prophethood of Moses and the Torah!” Each party reads their respective revealed Books, i.e. the Torah, which foretells the good news of the coming of Jesus as messenger to the lost sheep of the people of Israel and the Evangel which tells them the truth about Moses and the Torah.
114. Who is more unjust than he who prevents (men) from Allah’s Mosques, that His Name should be remembered therein, and strives to ruin them? (As for) these, it was not proper for them that they should enter it except in fear "from God or the believers". There is disgrace for them in this world, and they will have a severe torment in the Hereafter.
115. To Allāh belongs the East and the West. So, wherever you turn, there is the (honorable) Face of Allāh. Indeed Allāh is All-Encompass, All-Knowing.
116. They say: "Allāh has taken to Himself a son." Be He glorified and exalted above this; rather, whatever is in the heavens and the earth is His. All are obedient to Him.
118. Those who have no knowledge say: "Why does not Allāh speak to us (directly), or a Sign come to us?" The same was said by those before them. Their hearts are all alike. Indeed, We have shown clearly the Signs to a people who are certain (in Faith).
119. We have sent you (Muhammad) with the Truth27 as a bearer of good news and as a warner. You will not be asked about the occupants of the Hellfire.
27. Jesus said: "I will ask Allāh, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is Prophet Muhammad." He who follows his commands and obey him is the one who loves God; and he who loves prophet Muhammad will be loved by God. "If anyone loves God, he will keep prophet’ Muhammad's word; and God will love him, and make good abode for him in Paradise. He who does not love God does not keep prophet Muhammad words. Jesus said, "The Helper, the Spirit of Truth i.e., prophet Muhammad, whom Allāh (God) will send, will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that in the original Scriptures and more from God."
120. The Jews will not be pleased with you (Muslims), nor the Nazarenes (i.e., Christians) until you follow their faith (and way of life). Say: "God’s Guidance (of the Religion of Islam), that is the (right) Guidance." If you follow their desires after the knowledge that has come to you, then you would have against Allāh 'God' neither any protector, nor helper.
121. Those to whom We have given the Scripture recite (and apply its teachings to their lives) as it should be recited (and applied)28. These believe in it. Whoever denies it (the Qur’an), they are the losers.
28. Applying the Qur’an by action is the duty of all the believers. If we don’t apply it in our lives, the Qur’an becomes nothing more to us than a normal book. The first step toward applying God’s Word in our lives is reading it. Our goal in reading is to get to know Allāh (God), to learn His ways, and to understand His purpose of life. Our next goal is that we keep God’s Word in our hearts by studying, memorizing, and contemplating on what we have first read. These four steps: read, study, memorize, contemplate - make it possible to successfully apply the Qur’an to our lives. If we desire for the Word to take root in our lives so that we produce a harvest that pleases Allāh, we must ponder, reflect, and contemplate on what we read and study in the Qur’an. The application of the Qur’an enforces and further enlightens our study, and it also serves to sharpen our discernment, helping us to better distinguish between good and evil.
122. O children of Israel, recall My favor which I (Allāh) bestowed on you and that I preferred you over (all) others (for My Revelations in the past).
123. Guard (yourselves) against a Day when no person will help another in the least; neither will any ransom be accepted from him, nor will intercession benefit him, nor will they be helped.
124. (Mention Muhammad) when Abraham was tested by his Lord 'Allāh' with words (certain Commandments)29, he fulfilled them all. 'Allāh' said: "I will make you a leader of the people." Abraham said: "And of my offspring?" 'Allāh' said: "My Covenant does not include the unjust."
29. The Prophet Muhammad said, "Five practices are characteristic of Al-Fitrah 'the natural inclination': (1) Circumcision. (2) Shaving the pubic hair. (3) Cutting the moustaches short. (4) Clipping the nails. (5) and depilating the hair of the armpits.
125. We made the House (the Ka’bah at Makkah) a place of refuge and sanctuary for the people. Take Abraham's standing-place (when building the Ka'bah) as a place of prayer. We advised Abraham and Ishmael to keep My house (the Ka’bah) clean for the pilgrims, the worshippers and those who bow down (and) prostrate themselves in worship in it.
126. When Abraham prayed saying: "Lord 'Allāh', make this town (Makkah) a secure place and provide its people with plenty of produce, such of them as believe in Allāh and the Last Day". 'Allāh' said: "Whoever denies (the Truth), I will grant him enjoyment for a short while, then I will drive him to the torment of the Fire." What a terrible destination.
127. While Abraham and Ishmael were raising the foundations of the House 'the Ka’bah', they prayed: "Lord 'Allāh', accept from us. Verily You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing".
128. Our Lord, make us both submissive to You and (raise) from our offspring a nation submitting to You, and show us our ways of devotion, and turn to us (mercifully). Verily, You are the Accepter of repentance, the Most Merciful.
129. Our Lord, send to them a messenger among them who will recite to them Your verses, teach them the Book, Wisdom, and purify them. You are the All-Mighty, the All-Wise."
130. Who turns away from the creed of Abraham (i.e., Islam) except one who fools himself. We have chosen him in this world, and in the Hereafter - he is among the righteous (in the highest rank of Heaven).
132. Abraham left this legacy to his sons and (so did) Jacob (saying): "O my sons, Allāh has approved for you (this) Faith (of Islam), so do not die except as Muslims."
133. Or were you witnesses when death approached Jacob, when he said to his sons: "What will you worship after me?" They said: "We shall only worship your God and the God of your fathers Abraham, Ishmael and Isaac, (solely) one God 'Allāh', and to Him (alone) do we submit.
134. That nation is gone. They are responsible for what they earned (of good or evil) and you are responsible for what you earn. You will not be accountable for what they have done.
135. They say: "Be Jews or Nazarenes (i.e., Christians), you will be rightly guided." Say: 'Rather, (we follow Islam) the upright Creed of Abraham, and he was not a polytheist."
136. (O Muslims), say: "We believe in Allāh (God) and what has been revealed to us, and what has been revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and (to the prophets) from his descendants, and what was given (of Scriptures) to Moses, Jesus, and what was given to the prophets from their Lord, we do not make any distinction between any of them, and to Allāh do we submit."
137. So if they believe in the same as you believe in, then they have been rightly guided; but if they turn away, it would be for no reason other than their own malice. Allāh is a sufficient defender for you against them. For He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
138. Islam is the baptism of Allāh "God'30. No one is better baptizer than Allāh. and We are His worshipers.
30. Whoever believes and is baptized in Islam will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. Baptism is used here as a Muslim sacrament marked by ritual use of water taking total bath after embracing Islam by bearing witness that none is worthy of worship but Allāh, and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, and that Jesus is the servant of Allāh and His messenger, and His word that He bestowed on Mary, and a soul created by Allāh, testifying that Paradise is real and Hell is real, and admitting the recipient to the Muslim community by performing the prayer. This rite is the personal and public identification with Allāh and His messenger Muhammad, accepting Islam as the only true religion of God and as a way of life. Baptism in Islam is a symbol of a believer’s dedication toward Allāh and his teachings and obeying His messenger, the Prophet Muhammad. It is the most important promise you can make in your life.
139. Say (to the Jews and Christians): "Do you dispute with us about Allāh, and He is our Lord and your Lord and we shall have our deeds and you shall have your deeds. We are ever sincere and devoted to Him."
140. Or do you say that Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and (the prophets from) his descendants, were Jews or Nazarenes (i.e., Christians)? Say: "Are you better knowing or Allāh?" Who is more unjust than he who refuses to testify to the truth that he has from Allāh? For Allāh is not unaware of what you do.
141. That nation is gone. They will have what they earned (of good or evil) and you will have what you earn. You are not accountable for what they have done.
142. Fools among the people31 will soon say: "What has turned them (the Muslims) from their Qiblah (the prayer direction towards Jerusalem) which they used to face32? Say: "The East and the West belong only to Allāh." He guides whom He wills to a Right Path.
31. Pagans, hypocrites, and the unbelieving Jews.
32. Prior to the command in the Verse 144, they had been facing Jerusalem to the north.
143. Thus We have made you (Muslims) a medium (just and the best) nation33 that you be witness over the people and (that) the Messenger (Muhammad) be a witness over you. We did not make the direction which you used to face for prayer except that We might distinguish him who follows the messenger from him who turns back upon his heels. It was certainly heavy except for those whom Allāh has guided. Never Allāh would make your faith (prayers) go to waste, for Allāh is Affectionate, Merciful to the people.
144. We see the turning of your face to the heaven34, so We shall turn you to a direction which you shall like. So turn your face towards the Sacred Mosque (in Makkah), and wherever you are, turn your faces towards it. Those who have been given the Scripture certainly know that it is the Truth from their Lord. Allāh is not unaware of what you do.
34. The Prophet Muhammad was awaiting the command to change the qiblah (the direction of the prayer); so he used to look up at the sky.
145. Even if you were to bring to those (Jews and Christians) who have been given the Scripture35 all kinds of authoritative proof they would not follow your Qiblah, nor can you be a follower of their Qiblah. Neither are they36 the followers of each other’s Qiblah. If you follow their desires after the (Divine) Knowledge that has come to you, then you are certainly of the unjust.
35. Who persist in denying the Truth and are arrogant.
36. I.e., the Jews who face the temple mount, and the Christians who face towards the East.
146. Those (learned Jews and Christians) to whom We have given the Scripture know him (Muhammad) as they know their sons37, and a party of them certainly hide the Truth knowingly.
37. Because of the descriptions of him in the Bible.
148. Every one pursues his goal. Compete with one another in performing good deeds. Wherever you may be, Allāh will bring you all together (for Judgment). Verily Allâh has full Power over all things.
149. So from wherever you go out (for prayer) turn your face towards the Sacred Mosque (in Makkah). It is the very Truth from your Lord. Allāh is not unaware of what you do.
150. Wherever you go out (to prayer), turn your face towards the Sacred Mosque (in Makkah); and wherever you (believers) may be, turn your faces towards it, so that the people38 may have no argument against you, unless they be those of them who are unjust; so do not fear them39, but fear Me - that I may complete My Favor upon you and that you may be guided.
38. I.e., the followers of the past Scripture.
39. It is no wonder that the message to “Fear not…” appears so frequently in the Qur’an. Fear does, after all, have a way of creeping in on us, though we may close the windows tight and double check the doors. We might fear losing someone dear to us, or worry about our future or our children’s. When we close our eyes for a night’s sleep, our minds may begin turning over a hundred what-ifs about tomorrow, filling us with anxiety about circumstances beyond our control. While fear is a common human experience, the Quran's promise that Allāh is Our Protector, for Allāh is always with Us.
151. Just as We have sent among you a messenger (i.e., Muhammad) from yourselves who recites to you Our Verses, purifies you, teaches you the Book (Qur’an) and the Wisdom, and teaches you that which you did not know40.
40. When a person rejects the Prophet Muhammad, God's messenger, he is rejecting God, the Lord Whom sent him. Such is a grievous sin much worse than the other wicked acts. People should believe in the significance of God's sending of messengers. Allāh 'God' assures those who will accept and believe in the messengers sent by Him that they shall certainly receive their reward. The Prophet Muhammad said: "Every prophet was sent specifically to his own people, whereas I 'Muhammad' was sent to all (people), white and black."
It is an obligation to everyone in order to receive salvation to bear witness that there is no deity but Allāh, and bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of God. This testimony declares belief in the oneness of God and the acceptance of Muhammad as God's last and final messenger. Whoever believes in Allāh and His messenger, the Prophet Muhammad, will have eternal life.
This is the confidence we have in approaching Allāh: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.
152. So, remember Me (by praying and glorifying), I will remember you41; be grateful to Me, and do not deny Me.
41.The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said, "Allāh says: 'I am just as My servant thinks I am, (i.e. I am able to do for him what he thinks I can do for him) and I am with him if He remembers Me. If he remembers Me in himself, I too, remember him in Myself; and if he remembers Me in a group of people, I remember him in a group that is better than they; and if he comes one span nearer to Me, I go one cubit nearer to him; and if he comes one cubit nearer to Me, I go a distance of two outstretched arms nearer to him; and if he comes to Me walking, I go to him running.' "
155. We shall try you with a little of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives, and crops. So give good news to the patient43,
43. Blessed is the one who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive much rewards and favors, which Allāh has promised to those who are patient during hardships.
When you meet with various trials consider it all joy, knowing as you do that this tested quality of your faith produces endurance. The various trial you face in life will put your faith to the test. But if you endure patiently the results are positive. You will gain more faith and a stronger relationship with Allāh.
158. Indeed, Safa and Marwah44 are reminders of God’s (Love)45; so whoever makes a major or lesser pilgrimage to the House (the Ka’bah in Makkah), there is no blame on him if he goes round them both (seven times). Whoever willingly does good deed in obedience to Allāh, then Allah is Most Appreciative, All-Knowing.
44. Names of two small mountains in Makkah. They are reminders of God’s Love as Allāh settled Ismael and his mother Hagar in Mecca, near which they had found relief and water at the Well of Zamzam. Ismail is associated with the construction of the Ka'aba and considered the ancestor to prophet Muhammad.
45. That He hears your prayers and forgives your sins, if you come to Him with pure heart full of submission, free of polytheism, hypocrisy, and arrogance.
159. Those who hide the clear proofs and the guidance that We sent down after We made it clear for the people in the Book, these are they whom Allāh shall curse, and those who curse (among Allah's creatures) shall curse them (too).
160. Except those who repent and live righteously and make manifest (the Truth they concealed), these are they to whom I (Allāh) turn to (mercifully); for I am the Accepter of Repentance, the Most Merciful.
161. Those who deny (Allāh and His Messenger Muhammad) and die while they are deniers, these are they on whom is the Curse of Allāh, the angels and all of mankind;
164. In the creation of the heavens and the earth, the alternation of the night and day, the ships that sail in the sea with that which benefits the people, the water which Allāh sends down from the sky reviving thereby the earth after its death, the spreading all (kinds of) animals therein, the directing of winds and the clouds made subservient for service between the sky and the earth are certainly Signs for a people who understand.
165. However, among the people are those who take for themselves objects of worship besides Allāh, whom they love as they love Allāh. Those who believe (in Allāh and His messenger) are stronger in love for Allāh46. If those who work iniquity (by associating others with Allāh) would consider (that) when they see the torment, (they would realize) that to Allāh belongs all-Power, and that He is Severe in 'His' torment.
46. Muhammad, God's messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever loves for the sake of Allāh, hates for the sake of Allāh, gives for the sake of Allāh, and withholds for the sake of Allāh has perfected the faith.”
Whoever loves for the sake of Allāh and hates for the sake of Allāh, and befriends for the sake of Allāh and shows enmity
for the sake of Allāh, would get Allah’s closeness. Without abiding by this, no one can get the real taste (sweetness) of Faith though he may have been a frequent offerer of prayer and fasts. Today people keep relationship, and love only for some worldly reason but this will not provide them any benefit on the Day of Judgement.
167. The followers will say: "Had there been for us another chance, so we would have denounced them as they have denounced us." Thus will Allāh show them their deeds to be intense regret to them, and they will not come out of the Fire.
170. When they are asked to follow what Allāh has sent down (of Revelation), they say: "Rather, we only follow what we found our fathers upon. Even though their fathers had no sense at all, nor did they follow the right Way.
171. The example of those who deny 'the Truth' is as of one who calls out to (cattle) which hears no more than a call and a cry - deaf, dumb (and) blind, so they do not understand.
173. He has only forbidden to eat 'the flesh of' dead animals, blood, pork, and what is consecrated 'upon slaughtering' in any name other than Allāh. Whoever is driven by necessity, not desiring, nor exceeding the limit, no sin shall be upon him. Indeed, Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
174. Those who hide any part of what Allāh has revealed of the Book and barter it away for a small price, they consume nothing but fire into their bellies. Allāh will not speak to them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them, and they shall have a painful torment.
177. Righteousness is not that you turn your faces towards the East and the West (during prayer), but righteousness is (in the one) who believes in Allāh, the Last Day, the angels, the Book (This Qur'an), the prophets, who gives money for the love of God, to (the poor) relatives, orphans, the destitute, the (stranded) alien, beggars, for (the emancipation of) captives, who keeps up the prayer, pays the poor-rate, (who) fulfills their promise when they promise, and is patient during poverty and ailment and when meeting an enemy. These are the ones who are true (to themselves) and it is these who are truly the righteous.
49. This also applies to the strangers and foreigners who are left without means whilst travelling, being away from home, and those aliens in a land they belong not to them and live with them.If a stranger or foreigner from other country stays in your land you must not cause him stress and anxiety. The stranger or foreigner that is resident in your land must be unto you as one born among you, and show him affection and mercy and treat him justly.
The prophet Muhammad said:
"Whoever killed an alien resident or a foreigner having a treaty and covenant with the Muslims, shall not smell the smell of Paradise though its smell is perceived from a distance of forty years." In another statement he said: "If anyone wrongs an alien resident or foreigner having covenant with the Muslims, detracts from his rights, treats him unjustly, burdens him with more work than he is able to do, or takes something from him without his consent, I will plead for him (that alien resident or foreigner) on the Day of Resurrection."
178. O believers, just retaliation is ordained for you in case of murder, a free man for a free man, a slave for a slave, and a female for a female. However, if the convicted person (i.e., the killer) receives pardon from his brother (the aggrieved party by taking blood money) - then a fair compensation should be set and paid in best way. This is an alleviation from 'Allāh' your Lord and a Mercy. Whoever transgresses after this (settlement), he shall have a painful torment.
180. Leaving a legacy is ordained for you when death approaches one of you if he leaves wealth, he should bequeath it to his parents and relatives according to the law50. A duty (incumbent) upon the righteous51.
50. That is justly, not giving more than the allotted share of one-third.
51. This verse has been abrogated by the ‘inheritance’ verse, see Q. 4:11 and by the
saying of the Prophet: ‘Do not make testament for one [already] inheriting’.
181. Whoever alters it (the will of a deceased person) after he has heard it, the sin of it then is only upon those who alter it. Verily Allāh is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
182. But he who fears of the testator's deviation or sin, and settles between the parties, there is no sin on him. Indeed, Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
183. O believers, fasting is ordained for you52, as it was ordained for those before you, so that you may fear Allāh and shun evil53.
52. Muhammad, God's Messenger said, "Whoever observes fasts during the month of Ramadan out of sincere faith, and hoping to attain Allah's rewards, then all his past sins will be forgiven."
53. Prophet Muhammad fasted for twenty nine or thirty days of the lunar month of Ramadan every year. He used to commune with Allāh in night prayers. Likewise, if you pray and fast, you can feel closer to Allāh and better understand the things He wants you to do.
184. A certain number of days. Whoever among you is sick or on a journey, then (he shall fast) a (like) number of other days. Those who are not able to fast may effect a redemption by feeding a poor person (for each day). Whoever volunteers to give more, it is better for him; and that you fast is better for you, if you only knew54.
54. The provision of this verse has been abrogated by the next Verse 185, with a few exceptions, i.e., the very old or pregnant woman, etc.
185. The month of Ramadan is that in which the Qur’an was revealed; a guide to the people, the most authoritative of all guidance and a standard to discern right from wrong. So whoever of you witnesses this month, should fast. He who is sick or upon a journey, has to fast a (like) number of other days. Allāh wants ease for you, and He does not want for you hardship, (He desires) that you complete the fast and to glorify Allāh for what He has guided you, and that you may give (Him) thanks.
186. When My servants ask you 'Muhammad' about Me55, then I am near. I answer the prayer of the suppliant when he calls on Me, so let them answer My call and believe in Me that they may be rightly guided56.
55. A group of followers of the Prophet asked him, ‘Is 'Allāh our Lord nearby so that we should talk to Him secretly, or is He far away, so that we should call out to him?’ Then this Verse was revealed. God’s nearness means that one need not raise one’s voice or ask for intercession for God to hear one’s Prayers and answer them. God takes on the answer directly to His servants without the need for intercession.
56. Muhammad, God's Messenger said, "God said, ‘I will declare war against him who shows hostility to a pious worshipper of Mine. And the most beloved things with which My slave comes nearer to Me, is what I have enjoined upon him; and My slave keeps on coming closer to Me through performing extra good deeds besides what is obligatory till I love him. Then I become his sense of hearing with which he hears, and his sense of sight with which he sees, and his hand with which he grips, and his leg with which he walks; and if he asks Me, I will give him, and if he asks My protection (Refuge), I will protect him; (i.e. give him My Refuge), and I do not hesitate to do anything as I hesitate to take the soul of the believer, for he hates death, and I hate to disappoint him."
187. It is lawful for you during the nights of the fast to have carnal relations with your wives. They are a clothing for you just as you are a clothing for them. Allāh knew that you acted unfaithfully to yourselves57, so He has turned to you (mercifully) and removed from you (this burden); so now you may approach them (your wives) intimately58 (on the nights of the fast) and seek what Allāh has ordained for you. Eat and drink until the whiteness of the day becomes distinct from the blackness of the night at dawn, then complete the fast until the nightfall (i.e., sunset). Do not have carnal relations with them (your wives) while you keep yourselves in the mosques (for worship). These are the set Limits of Allāh, so do not approach them. Thus does Allāh make clear His Verses for the people that they may fear Allāh and shun evil.
57. By secretly doing what was prohibited to you of having carnal relations with your wives during the nights of Ramadan.
58. Prior to this revelation, marital relations were unlawful during nights preceding fasting. Some were unable to refrain and secretly disobeyed, but Allāh accepted their repentance, and then it was made lawful.
188. Do not consume your wealth among yourselves in illegal ways, nor give bribery to the rulers (judges) that you may wrongly acquire a part of the wealth of the people knowingly59.
59. Muhammad, the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him said, “God has cursed the one who offers a bribe and the one who receives a bribe.”
189. They ask you about the different phaces of the moon. Say: "They are there to indicate to people the phases of time and the Pilgrimage season." It is not a righteous act to enter houses from the back, but righteousness is (found in) the one who guards against evil. So enter houses through their proper doors. Fear Allāh and keep His Commandments, that you may succeed and prosper.
190. Fight in the Way of Allāh those who fight you60, but do not transgress. Indeed, Allāh does not like the transgressors.
60. A companion of the prophet said, i asked God’s Messenger, "What is the best deed in Islam?" He replied, "To perform the prayers at their early stated times." I asked, "What is next in goodness?" He replied, "To honor your parents: for this is well pleasing unto Allāh." I further asked, "What is next in goodness?" He replied, "To participate in Jihâd for God’s Cause."
191. Kill them (in battle, the aggressors) wherever you overtake them, and drive them out from where they drove you out. Idolatry and its imposition on others is severer than killing. Do not fight them in the vicinity of the sacred Mosque (in Makkah) unless they fight with you in it first. If they fight you, then kill them; such is the recompense of the deniers 'of the Truth, opposers of peace".
193. Fight them so that there will be no more fitna 'idolatry and iniquity, and God's religion 'Islam' will become dominant. If they desist 'from denial and aggression', then there should be no hostility except against the workers of iniquity.
194. (Aggression committed in) the Sacred months (can be dealt with) in the Sacred months, and for (all) violations is legal retribution. So, if anyone transgresses against you, you may also retaliate against them to an equal extent. Be mindful of Allāh and Know that Allāh is with the righteous.
195. Spend in the Cause of Allāh, but do not push yourselves into perdition with your own hands61. Do good62, for Allāh loves those who do good (and give generously).
61. By abandoning the Jihâd in the Cause of God or withholding the money needed for it.
62. Let us not become weary in doing good, for Allāh will reward us, and at the right time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Let us do good to all people, especially to those who fight for the Cause of Allāh and the preachers who call the people to the Truth, and the family of believers in general who regularly attend the congregational prayers in the Mosques.
196. Complete the Hajj and the ‘Umra63for Allāh alone, but if you are prevented, then (send) whatever offering64 that is easy to obtain, and do not shave your heads until the offering reaches its destination. If one of you is sick or has an ailment in his scalp (necessitating shaving) then (he should offer) a compensation by fasting or alms or sacrificial offering65, then when you are secure, whoever combines the ‘Umra with the Pilgrimage (should take) whatever offering is easy to obtain. Whoever cannot find (any offering) should fast for three days during the pilgrimage, and for seven days when you return - these (make) ten (days) complete - this is for him whose family is not resident in the Sacred Mosque. Fear Allah and keep to His Commandments, and know that Allāh is Severe in Punishment.
63. Pilgrimage and lesser pilgrimage to Makkah.
64. A sheep, a cow, or a camel.
65.I.e., Fasting three days, or feeding six poor of Haram people (sanctified area of Makkah), or slaughtering a sheep or goat and distributing it among the poor of Haram people.
197. The Pilgrimage is (performed in) the well-known months66. Whoever intends the performance of the Pilgrimage (by assuming Ihram), there is to be no carnal relations, nor committing sins, nor disputing during the Hajj. Whatever good you do, Allāh knows it. Take provision, for the best provision is 'to live a life of' piety. Fear me and Keep all my Commands always, O you of sound understanding.
66. The months of Shawwal, Dhul Qa’dah, and Dhul Hijjah in the lunar year.
198. It is not a sin if you seek bounty from (Allāh) your Lord (by trading during Hajj). When you depart from Arafat, then honor Allāh near the Sacred Monument (in Muzdalifah), and honor Him as He has guided you, though before that you were certainly among those astray.
199. Then depart from ‘Arafa', the place which (all) the people depart, and ask the Forgiveness of Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
200. When you have completed your devotions67, then honor Allāh just as you would honor your fathers, or even more earnestly. There are some people who say, "Our Lord, give us in the world,” and he has no portion in the Hereafter.
67. I.e., Ihrâm, circling around the Ka‘bah and As-Safâ and Al-Marwah, staying at ‘Arafât, Muzdalifah and Mina, stoning of the specified pillars in Mina and slaughtering the Hady (animal).
203. Honor Allāh during the special (three) numbered days68. Whoever hastens (to depart Mina) in the second day69, there is nothing wrong that he has done, and whoever remains behind70 there is nothing wrong that he has done. (This is) for him who keeps My commandments. So fear Allah and shun evil, and know that you shall be gathered together to Him.
68. In the valley of Mina i.e., the 11th, 12th, and 13th of the month of Dul-Hijjah for those performing the Pilgrimage. People are encouraged to mention Allāh in the form of Takbīr abundantly during these days of Tashrīq. That is to say, "Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, laa ilaaha illallaah, wallāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, wa Lillaahil-hamd" (Allāh is Most Great, Allāh is most Great, Allāh is most Great, there is no god but Allāh, Allāh is Most great, Allāh is most great, and to Allāh be praise)”.
69. I.e., the 12th of Dul-Hijjah.
70. I.e., a day more i.e., the 13th of Dul-Hijjah.
204. Among men is he whose speech may please you in this worldly life, and he calls on Allāh to witness what is in his heart, yet he is the most quarrelsome opponent71.
71. Muhammad, the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, the most beloved statement to Allāh is for a servant to say, ‘Glory be to You, O Allāh, and Your praises. Blessed is Your name, exalted is Your majesty, and there is no god besides You.’ The most hateful statement to Allāh is for a man to say to another man, ‘Fear Allāh!’ and he replies, ‘Mind yourself!’”
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) also said: “The most hated person in the sight of Allāh is the most quarrelsome person". This is one of the four traits of a sheer hypocrite. The other three being: telling lies, breaking promises and betraying pledges.
205. When he turns back, he goes about the land that he may cause corruption in it, and destroy the crops and the cattle. But Allāh does not like corruption.
206. When he is told, fear Allāh, sinful pride prevents him from paying heed to such advice, so Gehinnom (Hell) is enough for him. What an evil dwelling place.
210. Do they (who fail to fully submit to Allāh) then wait anything other than that Allāh should come to them with shadows of (white) clouds (to pass Judgment on His creation) and the angels (to execute His orders), so that the matter is settled? And to Allāh do all matters return.
211. Ask the children of Israel how many a clear sign have We given them. Whoever changes the Favor of Allāh (i.e., Islam) after it has come to him (for denial), then Allāh is Severe in Punishment.
212. The life of this world is made to seem attractive to those who deny (the Truth), and they mock at those who believe; but those (believers) who guard 'themselves against evil' shall be above them on the Day of Resurrection. And Allāh provides for whoever he wills without counting.
213. Mankind was just one nation (then they began to differ); so Allāh sent (to them) Prophets as bearers of good news, and as warners. He sent with them the Scripture in truth, that it might judge between people in that in which they differed. None but the very people who were given it differed about it after clear proofs had come to them, out of mutual jealousy. So Allāh has guided by His Will those who believed in the Truth concerning that wherein they differed - for Allāh guides whom He wills to a right Path.
214. Do you think that you will enter Paradise while yet the state of those who have passed on before you has not come upon you? They were touched by poverty and illness and were shaken (by all types of tribulations) that even the messenger and those who believed with him said: "When will the Help of Allāh come?" Allah's help is certainly near.
215. They ask you as to what they should spend. Say: "Whatever wealth you spend, give it to your parents, the relatives, the orphans, the destitute and the (stranded) alien (stranger and foreigner)." Whatever good you do, Allāh is All-Aware of it.
216. Fighting is ordained for you (when and where necessary), but you dislike it; and it may be that you dislike a thing while it is good for you, and it may be that you love a thing while it is bad for you. Allāh knows, while you do not know.
217. They ask you about fighting in the Sacred months*. Say: "Fighting in it is a grave matter (offence)." But hindering (the people) from Allah’s Way and denying Him, and (hindering people from) the Sacred mosque (in Makkah), and turning its people out of it are graver in the Sight of Allāh. Idolatry is worse than killing. They (the pagans) will not cease fighting with you until they turn you back from your religion if they can. Whoever of you turns back from his religion and dies as a denier - these are they whose deeds shall be void in this world and the Hereafter. They are the inmates of the Fire, therein they will abide forever.
* I.e., 1st, 7th, 11th and 12th months of the Islâmic calendar.
218. Those who believed and those who emigrated and strove hard in the Way of Allāh; these it is who hope for the Mercy of Allāh - for Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
219. They ask you about alcohol72 and gambling. Say: "In both of them there is a great sin and means of benefit for people, but their sin is more than their benefit." They ask you as to what they should spend. Say: "The excess73." Thus does Allāh make clear to you the Verses, that you may reflect.
72. The Prophet Muhammad said, "From among the portents of the Hour are the following: "General ignorance (in religious matters), (religious) knowledge will decrease, fornication will spread, alcoholic drinks will be drunk (in abundance), men will decrease and women will increase."
73. I.,e., from what one does not need.
220. About this world and the Hereafter. They ask you about the orphans. Say: "To set right for them (their affairs) is good." If you become co-partners with them, they are your brothers. Allāh knows the corrupter from the improver. Had Allāh willed, He would certainly have caused you to fall into hardship. Indeed, Allāh is All-Mighty, All-Wise.
221. Do not marry the idolatresses until they believe. A believing bondwoman is better than an idolatress woman, even though she pleases you. Do not give (believing women) in marriage to idolaters until they believe. A believing bondman is better than an idolater, even though he pleases you. They (the pagans) invite you to the Hellfire, but Allāh invites to Paradise and to Forgiveness by His Grace. Allāh makes clear His Verses to the people - that they may take heed.
222. They ask you about women's menses. Say: It is an ailment. Avoid having 'sex' with your wives74 during the menstrual discharge and do not approach them (for sexual intercourse) until their period is over. Then when they have cleansed themselves (from the menses), you may approach them as Allāh has commanded you. Allāh loves those who turn much (to Him in repentance), and He loves those who purify themselves and are clean75.
74. I.e., refrain from sexual intercourse during the menstrual discharge. It is prohibited also for a man to divorce a menstruating woman during her menses.
Allāh decreed that a woman should be divorced when she is in a state of purity, free from postpartum bleeding and menses, and during a time of purity when her husband has not yet had intercourse with her. This is the divorce that is prescribed according to the law.
Women are supposed to maintain proper hygiene and stop prayer during the period of the menses. They do not have to make up the prayers they missed during menstruation. When the menstruating period is over, women have to perform ritual purification (ghusl, that is total bath) and resume prayer.
75. Clean and purify yourselves, stop to do evil. If we confess our sins, Allāh is faithful to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. let us cleanse ourselves from all the impurity of flesh and spirit, perfecting righteousness in the fear of Allāh. Ask Allāh to create in you a clean heart. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see Allāh.
223. Your wives are a place of cultivation (i.e., sowing of seed) for you76, so approach your place of cultivation as you like77, but do some good act beforehand for yourselves78. Fear Allāh and keep His Commandments, and know that you will meet Him. Give good news to the believers.
76. In as much as you sow your seeds into their wombs in expectance of yield.
77. In whatever position, given that intercourse takes place in the vagina not the anus.
78. One of the most intimate and enjoyable experiences that a husband and wife can have together is enjoying foreplay, sexual intercourse and the climax called orgasm. That is, a husband and wife having sex together. Sexual activity as defined here includes foreplay, sexual intercourse and orgasm. Allāh designed our genitals for sexual activity to draw a husband and wife together and then to procreate.
224. Do not make your oaths by Allāh as an excuse for not doing good or guarding against evil or making peace between the people. Allāh is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
225. Allāh does not hold you accountable for your inattentive oaths, but He holds you accountable for what your hearts have intended. Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Forbearing.
226. Those who swear by Allāh not to ever have any carnal relations with their wives shall have (a waiting period of) four months79. If they decide to resume martial relations, then Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
79. This is the act of īlā’; vowing not to have carnal relations with one’s wife with the purpose of punishing her. Four months is the maximum time limit allowed for this state of affairs to go on. Otherwise, the husband who took such a vow needs to either correct his marriage, in which case he does not need to make up for breaking his vow and is forgiven by Allāh, or else he should conclude the divorce and no longer hurt his wife.
228. The divorced women must wait up to three menstrual cycles before another marriage. It is not lawful for them to hide what Allāh had created in their wombs, if they believe in Allāh and the Last Day. Their husbands have more right to resume martial relations within that period, if they want reconciliation. Women have rights similar to the rights over them according to the law. But the men (i.e., husbands) have a status above them (in responsibility and authority). Allāh is All-Mighty, All-Wise.
229. A martial relation can only be resumed after the first and second divorce, then either keeping with fairness or separating with kindness. It is not lawful for you to take any part of what you have given wives, unless they (husband and wife) fear that they cannot keep within the Laws of Allāh. Then if you fear that they cannot keep within the Laws of Allāh, there is no blame on them for what she gives up (to her husband) to become free thereby. These are the Laws of Allāh, so do not exceed them. Whoever exceeds the Laws of Allāh, these are the unjust.
230. If he divorce her (for the third time) she shall not be lawful to him afterwards until she has been married and divorced by another husband. In that case, there is no sin on them both (the woman and her former husband) if they return to each other (by marriage), if they both think that they can abide by the set limits (Laws) of Allāh. These are the set limits (Laws) of Allāh which He makes clear for a people who have knowledge.
231. When you divorce women and they (nearly) to finish their waiting period, then either keep them with honor or set them free with kindness. Do not keep them to hurt them, so that you exceed the set limits. Whoever does so, commits sin indeed against himself. Do not make jest of Allah's words. Remember the favors of Allāh upon you, and that which He has revealed to you of the Book (Qur’an) and the Wisdom, advising you thereby. Fear Allāh and keep His commandments, and know that Allāh is the Knower of everything.
232. When you have divorced women80
and they have ended their term (of waiting), do not prevent them from marrying their (former) husbands when they agree among themselves in a lawful manner. This is an advice for him among you who believes in Allāh and the Last Day. This is more virtuous and purer for you. Allāh knows while you do not know.
233. Mothers may breastfeed their babies for two whole years for those who desire to make complete the term of breastfeeding. The father has to pay their sustenance and clothing according to what is acceptable. None shall have imposed upon him a duty but to the extent of his capacity. None of the parents should suffer any loss from the other because of the baby. The (father’s) heir are similarly responsible to look after the children of a deceased. If both parents desire weaning by mutual consent and counsel, there is no blame on them. But if you wish to engage a wet-nurse for your children, there is no blame on you as long as you pay what you promised for according to the law. Fear Allāh and keep His Commandments, and know that Allāh sees what you do.
234. (As for) those of you who die and leave wives behind, they (the wives, if not pregnant) should wait for four months and ten days (and if pregnant, until birth). When they have fully fulfilled their term, there is no blame on you for what they do for themselves (i.e., to remarry) in a lawful manner. Allāh is well Aware of what you do.
235. There is no blame on you for indirectly showing interest in marrying (widowed or irrevocably divorced) women or keep (the proposal) concealed within your minds. Allāh knows that you will make mention of them, but do not give them a promise in secret, unless you speak in a lawful manner, and do not confirm the marriage tie until the decreed period (term of waiting) is fulfilled. Know that Allāh knows what is in your minds, so beware of Him. Know that Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Forbearing.
236. There is no blame on you if you divorce women when you have not touched them81 nor appointed for them a dowry, but (even in such a case) make provision for them, the wealthy according to his means, and the straitened in circumstances according to his means, a provision according to what is acceptable - (this is) a duty on the good-doers.
237. If you divorce them before you have touched them and you have appointed for them a dowry, then (pay to them) half of what you have appointed, unless they (the women) remit it or he should remit in whose hand is the marriage tie (the husband). It is nearer to piety that you should remit (and give her full dowry). Do not forget (to act with) graciousness between yourselves. Indeed, Allāh sees what you do.
238. Maintain with care the (obligatory five daily) prayers and (in particular) the middle (after noon) prayer and stand up truly obedient to Allāh82.
82. Prayers are mentioned in the midst of marital affair rulings, because of the hurtful feelings divorce can leave. Hence, people are reminded of the Hereafter, by virtue of being steadfast in their prayers. Prayer in another verse is a deterrent against vileness. Allāh has commanded us also in this verse because of His greatness and majesty, that mankind and jinn should stand up for Him only by way of humility and veneration. Hence the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said: “Whoever likes men to stand up for him out of humility and veneration, let him take his place in Hell.” That is because this is part of the might and pride that belongs only to Allāh. Thus making prostration to other than Allāh, making bowing to other than Allāh, standing like the standing in prayer for other than Allāh, swearing by other than Allāh, vowing by other than Allāh, shaving the head for other than Allāh, slaughtering for other than Allâh, making tawaaf (ritual circumbulation) around other than Allah’s house (ka’bah), having extreme love, fear, hope, obedience for other than Allāh just as the Creator (Allāh) should be venerated or even more extreme are all Idolatry deeds and the antagonists of the message of the prophets of God. If the one who stands by way of humility and veneration for someone other than Allāh – being living or dead – is a kind of idolatry, it is likewise the one who stands by way of humility and veneration for something abstract such as the national anthem/ pledge or flag; this is also idolatry. It is denial and disbelief in God and major hypocrisy. But standing up to greet a person is lawful unless the person that is being greeted is desires or requests for it. Allāh alone has the right that we stand up for Him out of humility, respect and veneration.
239.If you are fearful83, then (perform your prayers) whether you are on foot or riding. When you are secure, then praise Allāh (by offering the prayer) in the manner He has taught you, which you knew not (before).
240. Those of you who die and leave wives behind, (make) a bequest in favor of their wives of maintenance for a year without turning (them) out (from the deceased husband’s home)84, but if they themselves go out, there is no blame on you for what they do of lawful deeds by themselves. For Allāh is All-Mighty, All-Wise.
84. This directive was abrogated by those later revealed in 2:234 and 4:12.
243. Have you not considered those who left their homes in many thousands, fearing death? Allāh said to them, "Die". Then He revived them85. Allāh is Gracious to the people, but most of the people are not thankful (to Allāh).
85. This is the story of a certain people who, because of fear of annihilation, fled their town in droves, thus thinking that they would outdo God’s Will. In order to show them that they could not escape His Judgement and make them realize His bountiful favours, God took their lives to show them that He is capable of bringing about their worst fears, only then to give them their lives back again.
245. Who is it that will lend to Allāh a goodly loan86, so He will multiply it to him many times over - Allāh straitens and amplifies (provision), and you shall be (all) returned to Him (for Judgment).
86. I.e., spending in the cause of Allāh in expectation of nothing but His reward.
246. Have you not considered the assembly of the children of Israel after (the time of) Moses, when they said to a prophet of theirs (Samuel): "Appoint for us a king who will lead us in the fight for the Cause of Allāh." He said, "Would you perhaps refrain from fighting, if fighting is ordained for you?" They said: "Why we should not fight for the Cause of Allāh, when we and our sons have been expelled from our homes?". But when fighting was ordained for them, they turned back, except a few of them. Allāh is Well-Aware of the unjust.
247. Their prophet (Samuel) said to them: "Allāh has appointed Talut (Saul) as a king for you." They said: "How can he rule over us when we deserve more to be king than he, besides, he does not have abundant wealth?" He said: "Allāh has chosen him as your ruler and has given him vast knowledge and physical power." Allāh grants kingship to whom He wills. For Allāh is Ample in Giving, All-Knowing.
248. Their prophet (Samuel) said to them: "The Sign of his kingship is that there shall come to you the chest in which there is tranquility from 'Allāh' your Lord, and a remnant of that which the house of Moses and the house of Aaron have left behind, the angels carrying it. There is a Sign in this for you, if you are (true) believers."
249. When Talut (Saul) set forth with the army, he said: "Allāh will try you with a river; whoever then drinks from it, he is not of me, and whoever does not taste of it, he is of me, except he who takes with his hand as much of it as fills the hand;" but they drank from it, except a few of them. So when he had crossed the river, he and those who believed with him, they said: "We have today no power against Goliath and his army." Those who were sure that they would meet 'Allāh' their Lord, said: "How often has a small company overcome a large company by Allah’s Permission?" For Allāh is with the patient ones.
250. When they faced Goliath and his army in combat, they prayed: "Our Lord 'Allāh', pour down upon us patience, make our steps firm, and assist us against the denying people".
251. So they defeated them by Allah’s Permission. David killed Goliath and Allāh gave him the kingdom and wisdom, and taught him whatever He willed. Were it not for Allah’s repelling some people with others, the earth would have become full of corruption, but Allāh is bountiful to all beings.
253. These Messengers We preferred some to the others, among them were those to whom Allāh spoke directly87, and some of them He raised by (many degrees of) rank. We gave clear Miracles to Jesus, the son of Mary, and strengthened him with the holy spirit (the angel Gabriel). If Allāh had willed, those after them would not have fought one with another after clear Signs of Allāh had come to them, but (He gave them free will in religion, thus) they disagreed; so there were some of them who believed and others who denied (the Truth). If Allāh had willed, they would not have (disagreed and) fought one another - but Allāh does what He intends.
254. O believers, spend (in charity) out of what We have given you before the Day comes when there will be no trading, neither any friendship, nor intercession. And the deniers - they are the unjust.
255. Allāh - there is no god (worthy of worship) except Him, the Ever-Living, the All-Sustaining - drowsiness does not overtake Him nor sleep. To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on the earth. Who is he that can intercede with Him except with His Permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, but they cannot comprehend anything out of His Knowledge except what He wills, His Kursi (Footstool) extends over the heavens and the earth88, and the preservation of them both tires Him not - and He is the Most High, the Most Great.
88. It is narrated that, "Between the first heaven and the one above it is (a distance of) five hundred years. Between each of the heavens is (a distance of) five hundred years. Between the seventh heaven and the Kursiy is (a distance of) five hundred years. Between the Kursiy and the water is (a distance of) five hundred years, and the Throne is above the water. Allāh is above the Throne, and nothing whatsoever of our deeds is hidden from Him." Muhammad, The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The Kursiy in relation to the Throne is like an iron ring thrown out into the earth”.
256. There is no compulsion in the (acceptance of) religion89. Certainly right has become clearly distinct from error. Whoever rejects Satan and believes in Allāh, he indeed has grasped the firmest handhold, which shall never break. For Allāh is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
89. This is a great Islamic principle whereby no one is to be coerced to believe, but it is the duty of the believers to make sure that people know about Islam and what is right and what is wrong.
257. Allāh is the Guardian of the believers, He brings them out from the darknesses into the light. As for those who deny (the Truth), their guardians are the devils who take them out of the light into darknesses90. These are the inmates of the Fire, they will abide therein forever.
90. When the Qur’an talks about darknesses usually it is referring to a sinful path. Allāh is the light and Satan is in darknesses. Spiritually blind people are living in darknesses. They can’t understand the Qur’an or the Sunnah. They are blind and they can’t see that they’re on the path that leads to hell. We must all seek the light, which is only found in the Qur’an and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad. We must all repent and trust in Allāh.The darkness can never overcome the light. The light leads to eternal life and the darkness leads to eternal damnation.
258. Have you not considered him (Nimrud, the then ruler of Babylon) who disputed with Abraham about his Lord 'Allāh', because Allāh had given him kingship? When Abraham said: "My Lord 'Allāh' is He who gives life and causes death." His (opponent) said: "I also can give life and cause death." Abraham said: "Then Allāh causes the sun to rise from the east; so make it rise from the west (if you are truthful)." Thus he who denied (the Truth) was confounded. For Allāh does not guide the unjust people.
259. Or (have you heard) of the one (Ezra) who, on passing an empty and ruined town, said: "When Allāh will give it life after its death?" So Allāh caused him to die for a hundred years, then raised him to life. (Allāh) said: "How long have you remained (dead)?" He said: I have remained (in this state) a day, or part of a day. (Allāh) said: "Rather, you have remained one hundred years!" Look at your food and drink - which has not decayed (with time); and look at your donkey and its bones - to make you a sign to the people; see how We set the bones together, then clothe them with flesh. So when it became clear to him, he said: "I know that Allāh has full Power over all things."
260. "Or" when Abraham prayed: "Lord 'Allāh', show me how You give life to the dead, (Allāh) said: "Have you not believed?" (Abraham) said: "Yes, but (I ask this) that my heart may be more at ease." (Allāh) said: "Then take four birds and draw them to you (and cut their bodies into pieces), then place on every mountain a part of them, then call them, they will come to you flying. Know that Allāh is All-Mighty, All-Wise."
261. The example of those who spend their wealth for the Cause of Allāh is like a seed of (grain) growing seven ears (with) a hundred grains in every ear. Allāh multiplies for whom He wills. For Allāh is Ample-Giving, All-Knowing.
262. Those who spend their wealth for the Cause of Allāh, then do not follow up what they have spent (in charity) with reproach or hurt, they shall have their reward from their Lord 'Allāh', and they shall have no fear nor shall they grieve.
264. O believers, do not make your charity worthless by reminders and harm, like him who spends his wealth to be seen by the people, and does not believe in Allāh and the Last Day. So his example is like that of a (large) smooth rock with dust upon it, then heavy rain falls upon it, so it leaves it bare; they will not be able to gain anything of what they have earned. For Allāh
does not guide the denying people.
265. The example of those who spend their wealth to seek the Pleasure of Allāh and for the certainty of (reward for) their own selves is like that of a garden on an elevated ground, upon which heavy rain falls, so it brings forth its fruit twofold, but if heavy rain does not fall upon it, then a drizzle (is enough for it). Allāh Sees what you do.
266. Would anyone of you like that he should have a garden of date palms and grape vines with streams flowing under it, in which he has therein all kinds of fruits, and old age has overtaken him and he has weak offspring who need support, and then a hurricane with fire in it strikes the garden and burns to the ground? Thus Allāh makes (His) revelations clear to you - that you may reflect (and realize the Truth).
267. O believers, spend of the good things that you earn and what We have brought forth for you out of the earth. Do not aim at what is bad that you may spend it (in charity), while you would not take it yourselves except with closed eyes. Know that Allāh is Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy.
268. Satan threatens you with poverty and commands miserliness and indecency, but Allāh promises you Forgiveness from Himself and favors. For Allāh is Ample-Giving, All-Knowing.
269. He grants wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever is granted wisdom, he indeed is given much good91. Only people of reason can grasp this.
91. That is why we must get wisdom, get understanding. Wisdom teaches us what to do with knowledge. And true wisdom comes from Allāh only. Our knowledge always falls short, but Allah's wisdom provides what we need.
271. If you give charity openly, it is good, but if you hide it and give it to the poor, it is better for you92; and this remove with some of your evil deeds. Allāh is All-Aware of what you do.
92. The Prophet Muhammad said, "There are seven whom Allāh will shade with His shade on the day when there will be no shade except His: the just ruler; a young man who grows up worshipping his Lord; a man whose heart is attached to the mosque; two men who love one another for the sake of Allāh and meet and part on that basis; a man who is called by a woman of rank and beauty for adultery and says ‘I fear Allāh ’; a man who gives in charity and conceals it to such an extent that his left hand does not know what his right hand gives; and a man who remembers Allāh when he is alone, and his eyes fill up with tears.”
272. Not upon you is their (acceptance of the) guidance, but Allāh guides whom He wills. Whatever good thing you spend (in charity) is for your own good, provided you do not spend anything but to seek Allah’s Face. Whatever good things you spend (in charity) shall be paid back to you in full, and you shall not be dealt with unjustly.
273. (Charity is) for the poor who are confined for the Cause of Allāh - unable to move about in the land; the ignorant man thinks them to be rich because of (their) abstaining (from begging; but) you can recognize them by their (characteristic) grace; they do not beg of the people at all93. Whatever good thing you spend (in charity), Allāh certainly knows it.
93. Muhammad, God's messenger (may peace and blessings be upon him) said addressing the believers: "Who can guarantee for me that he will never ask people for something, and I will guarantee Paradise for him?"
This means that whoever commits himself not to ask people for their money or seek their help to fulfill his duties, whether much or little, he (the Prophet) will guarantee for him Paradise. That is because refraining from asking people entails reliance on Allāh, and is proof of one's strong hope and trust in Allāh, the Almighty. So this person's reward is that Allāh, the Exalted, admits him to Paradise.
274. Those who spend their wealth (in charity) any time during the night or day, secretly and openly, they shall have their reward from their Lord 'Allāh', no fear shall be upon them, nor shall they grieve.
275. Those who devour interest (usury) cannot stand (on the Day of Resurrection) except as one whom Satan has confounded by (his) touch stands. That is because they say: "Trading is but a form of interest;" whereas Allāh has allowed trading94 and forbidden interest95. To whomsoever the admonition has come from his Lord 'Allāh', and then desists, he shall have (the gains of) what has passed, and his case is for Allāh (to judge). Whoever returns (to usury) these are the inmates of the Fire - they will abide therein.
94. Muhammad, God's messenger said, "The seller and the buyer have the right to keep or return goods as long as they have not parted or till they part; and if both the parties spoke the truth and described the defects and qualities (of the goods) honestly, then they would be blessed in their transaction, and if they told lies or hid something, then the blessings of their transaction would be lost."
95. Muhammad, God's messenger prohibited taking money for blood, the price of a dog, the earnings by prostitution, and the money paid to a soothsayer; and he cursed her who tattoos and her who gets tattooed, the eater of Riba (usury - interest), and the maker of images."
276. Allāh will remove all blessings from interest (usury) and increase and bless (the provision for the one who performs) charitable deeds. For Allāh does not like every persisting denier, sinful one.
277. Those who believe and do good deeds who are steadfast in their prayers and pay the poor-rate, they shall have their reward from their Lord 'Allāh'. They shall have no fear, nor shall they grieve.
279. If you will not give up the interest which you demand, then be informed of War (against you) from Allāh 'God' and His messenger. But if you sincerely repent96, you will have your capital - neither harming97 nor suffering harm98.
96. And give up interest based transactions completely.
97. By asking for more than your capital sums.
98. By receiving less than your capital sums.
280. If (the debtor) faces hardship in paying his debits he must be given time until (he is in) ease. Waiving such a loan as charity is better for you, if you only knew99.
99. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: “Whoever is hopeful that Allāh will spare him the hardships of the Day of Judgement, then let him grant deferral to a constrained debtor, or relieve him ˹altogether˺”.
281. Guard yourselves against a Day in which you shall be 'all' returned to Allāh; then every soul shall be paid back in full what it has done, and they will not be dealt with unjustly.
282. O believers, if you take a loan for a fixed period of time, then write it down. Let a scribe write it down between you with fairness; and the scribe should not refuse to write as Allāh has taught him, so he should write; and let him who owes the debt dictate, and he should fear Allāh, his Lord, and not diminish anything from it. If he who owes the debt is unsound in understanding, or weak, or (if) he is not able to dictate himself, let his guardian dictate with fairness. Bring to witness two witnesses from among your men; but if there are not two men then one man and two women from among those whom you choose to be witnesses, so that if one of the two (women) errs, the second of the two may remind the other. The witnesses must not refuse to testify when their testimony is needed. Be not averse to writing down (the debt, whether it is) small or large, with the time of its falling due. This is more just in the Sight of Allāh, and assures greater accuracy in testimony, and the nearest (way) that you may not entertain doubts (afterwards), except when it is an immediate transaction which you conduct among yourselves. For then there is no blame on you in not writing it down. Take witnesses when you conclude a contract. Let no harm be done to the scribe or to the witness. For if you do (it) then it will be transgression in you. Fear Allāh and keep His Commandments; Allāh teaches you. Allāh knows each and every thing100.
100. This is known as the verse of debt, and it is the longest verse in the Qur’an.
283. If you are on a journey and you cannot find a scribe, then a security deposit should be taken. If one of you trusts another, then he who is trusted should deliver his trust, and let him fear Allāh, his Lord. Do not conceal testimony. Whoever conceals it, his heart is sinful. For Allāh knows what you do.
284. To Allāh belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. Whether you show what is within yourselves or hide it, Allāh will call you to account according to it101; then He will forgive whom He wills and chastise whom He wills. For Allāh has full Power over all things.
101. Allāh favoured the believing community by not holding them to account for the thoughts that go on in their minds, unless they put them into action. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: “Allāh will not hold my followers accountable for the thoughts that go on in their minds, unless they speak it out or bring it into action”.
285.The Messenger (Muhammad) believes in what has been revealed to him (of the Qur’an) from his Lord 'Allāh', and (so do) the believers. All of them believe in Allāh, His angels, His scriptures, His messengers, saying: "We find no difference among the messengers of God." and they say: "We hear and obey 'God's commands'.Our Lord, Your forgiveness (do we seek), and to You we shall all return."
286. Allāh does not impose on any soul a responsibility beyond its ability. Each will have (the benefit of) what (good) they have done, and upon them (the evil of) what they have earned: our Lord, do not impose blame on us if we forget or 'unintentionally' make a mistake. Lord, do not lay on us the burden that You laid on those before us102. Lord, do not lay on us what we cannot afford. Pardon and forgive our sins. Have Mercy on us. You are our Protector, so help us against the denying people103.
102. A reference to the heavy burden of rituals imposed by the Law of Moses upon the children of Israel, as well as the asceticism of the Law of Jesus to his followers.
103. The Prophet Muhammad said: “Whoever recites the last two Verses of this Chapter 'Al-Baqarah', they will suffice him ˹as a shield from the evil˺.”
