[1].The Qur’an is made up of such letters from the Arabic alphabet. The Arabs at the time of revelation were the unmatched masters of the Arabic language and yet when challenged were totally unable to bring anything like the Qur’an. Although these disjointed Arabic letters are referring to the inimitable nature of the Qur’an and its divine source, God knows best its meaning.
[2]. Such as the Existence of God, angels, jinn 'spirits, demons', life after death, Paradise and Hell, etc.
[3]. Keeping up the Prayer, entails performing it punctually and devoutly, observing the manner set forth by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , who said: “Pray as you have seen me Pray”.
[4]. It is to be noted that the reference of Allāh to Himself as "We or Us" in many Qur’ānic verses is necessarily understood in the Arabic language to denote grandeur and power, as opposed to the more intimate singular form "I or Me" used in specific instances. This is the “royal” We or Us. In English, its called the plural of majesty. This syntax is used, both in the English and Arabic languages, by emperors, kings and queens. “We, the Emperor of …, grant amnesty to …”. And to Allāh is the best example. He is the King of all kings. He is the Sovereign. To Him belongs the Dominion of the heavens and the earth. Further more the phrase 'a part of what We have provided for them' used the word “min” in Arabic which means some (or part), to make them aware that He will indeed not take from them except a small portion of their wealth, which does not harm them, but they benefit from giving it, and their brothers also benefit from it.
[5]. Of the Qur’an and the Sunnah - the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It includes everything he said, did, and approved of. Muhammad, God's Messenger ﷺ said: "Beware, I have been given the Qur'an and something similar to it along with it, yet the time is coming when a man replete on his couch will say: Keep to the Qur'an; what you find in it to be permissible treat as permissible, and what you find in it to be prohibited treat as prohibited. But indeed, whatever the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ forbids is like what Allāh forbids.”
[6]. Of the Torah, the Gospel, the Psalms, etc.
[7]. A veil preventing them from accepting the guidance, because of their arrogance and persistence in sin.
[8]. For the acceptance of the Truth is foolishness for the deniers and hypocrites, to those who are perishing, but to the Muslims who surrender to the will of God and are pure, it is the message of love and mercy from God.
[9]. Allāh gave another example of the condition of the hypocrites with the Qur’an and Islam. It is like heavy rain descended upon people in a desert, a downpour accompanied by dense darkness, thunder, and lightning. This prompted them to put their fingers in their ears due to fear of perdition, trying to avoid danger in a way that does not protect them from it. This is the case with the hypocrites when the Qur’an is revealed and hear what's in it of the warnings, they would deafen their ears so they would not benefit from its warning. They would not believe in the truth of the verses of the Qur’an, nor abandon the falsehood. Their admonition in the Qur’an and how it reveals their truth are akin to deafening thunderclaps penetrating their eardrums. Allāh encompasses the deniers with His knowledge and power, so they cannot escape Him or cause Him failure.
[10]. This is the case with the hypocrites. Whenever their wealth increases and their children, they say: The religion of Islam is truth from God, and they remain steadfast in it for a little while. But if a calamity befalls them or loss, they return to disbelief, and say this is because of the religion of Muhammad, which they followed, and had it not been for God’s respite and grace to them, these people would have been robbed of their hearing and sight, so it will not be returned to them because of their false following and turning away from the truth, and Allāh has the power to do that at any time He wishes.
[11]. That there is nothing like Him. A companion of the Prophet said, i asked the prophet Muhammad ﷺ, "What is the greatest sin in the sight of Allāh?" He said, "That you set up an equal unto Allāh though He Alone created you." I said, "That is indeed a grave sin." Then I asked, "What is next?" He said "To kill your child lest he should share your food with you." I asked, "What is next?" He said, "To commit adultery with the wife of your neighbour.".
[12]. In your claim that Muhammad ﷺ is the author of the Qur’an'.
[13]. I.e., the idols with the idolaters.
[14]. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, "The person who severs the bond of kinship will not enter Paradise".
[15]. These are the cycles of life and death that humans go through: seeds in the loins of men, creation and birth, death, being brought to life at resurrection and being held accountable for one’s deeds.
[16]. Mankind, generations after generations.
[17]. And the “words” they received to repent sincerely are mentioned in Qur’an 7: 23. Adam and Eve prayed:
"Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will surely be among the losers." And they were forgiven. This
Emphasizes that sincere repentance, humility, and seeking mercy are the key to Allah’s forgiveness and acceptance.
[19]. Congregational prayer is obligatory for all men in the mosque. It is not permissible for a man who is able to attend the congregational prayer in the mosque to pray in his house even if he prays in congregation with his family.
the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “Whoever hears the call to prayer and does not come, there is no prayer for him [i.e., his prayer is not valid], unless he has an excuse. It was asked the companion of the prophet, what is an excuse? He said, Fear or sickness.
[20]. The Children of Israel who were hindered from belief out of greed and love of the world. They are commanded to seek help in patience, i.e. fasting, which dents wantonness, and Prayer because it leads to humbleness and submission to the will of God and expels haughtiness.
[21]. Of your time period, by sending you Prophets, Divine Scriptures, and giving you kingship.
[22]. To do and say, but they entered it dragging themselves on their rears, saying, ‘A grain in a hair, instead of 'relieve us of our burdens ’, mocking Allah’s command. So God punished them because of their disobedience to Him with a plague from the sky, by which seventy thousand of them died.
[23]. As atonement for an unsolved murder. The slaughter of the cow was also intended to cut off their hearts from the love of worshiping the calf. The problem wasn't only the murder, but their idolatry.
[23]. In the Bible about the truthfulness of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
[25]. About the prophet Muhammad ﷺ, despite his characteristics being mentioned in the Bible.
[26]. Because of their disbelieving in the Qur’an.
[27]. Because of their disbelieving in the Torah before and for their previous sins.
[28]. What it said about believing in the Messenger of God, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and the Qur’an.
[29]. A variant reading has al-malikayn, "the two kings" who were in Babylon - Harut and Marut - here the names stand for the two angels or the two kings.
[30]. Rāʿinā in Arabic literally means “consider us / give us your attention” but was twisted mockingly by some Jews into an insulting play on words, which is why believers were forbidden to use it.
Unẓurnā means “look upon us / grant us attention” and avoids the ambiguity.
“listen” stresses attentiveness to the Prophet ﷺ instead of demanding his attention improperly. In this Verse there is evidence of severe prohibition to imitate the pagans and the deniers in their words and actions, their dress, their festivals, their worship and other matters that were not prescribed for us or approved by Islam.
[31]. Believers are commanded to turn their attention away from fruitless arguments and concentrate on matters that are more rewarding and ascertaining of Faith.
[32]. When the Christians of Najrān came to Muhammad, the Messenger of God (ﷺ), the rabbis met them and both parties disputed in the Messenger’s (ﷺ) presence. A Jewish rabbi said: “You ˹Christians˺ have no ground whatsoever!” and he denied Jesus and the Evangel! A Najranian said: “You have no ground whatsoever!” and he denied both the Prophethood of Moses and the Torah!” Each party reads their respective revealed Books, i.e. the Torah, which foretells the good news of the coming of Jesus as messenger to the lost sheep of the people of Israel and the Evangel which tells them the truth about Moses and the Torah.
[33]. Jesus said: "I will ask Allāh, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is Prophet Muhammad ﷺ." He who follows his commands and obey him is the one who loves God; and he who loves prophet Muhammad ﷺ will be loved by God. "If anyone loves God, he will keep prophet Muhammad's word; and God will love him, and make good abode for him in Paradise. He who does not love God does not keep prophet Muhammad's words. Jesus said, "The Helper, the Spirit of Truth i.e., prophet Muhammad ﷺ, whom Allāh (God) will send, will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that in the original Scriptures and more from God."
[34]. Applying the Qur’an by action is the duty of all the believers. If we don’t apply it in our lives, the Qur’an becomes nothing more to us than a normal book. The first step toward applying God’s Word in our lives is reading it. Our goal in reading is to get to know Allāh 'God', to learn His ways, and to understand His purpose of life. Our next goal is that we keep God’s Word in our hearts by studying, memorizing, and contemplating on what we have first read. These four steps: read, study, memorize, contemplate - make it possible to successfully apply the Qur’an to our lives. If we desire for the Word of God to take root in our lives so that we produce a harvest that pleases Allāh, we must ponder, reflect, and contemplate on what we read and study in the Qur’an. The application of the Qur’an enforces and further enlightens our study, and it also serves to sharpen our discernment, helping us to better distinguish between good and evil.
[35]. The “words” or commands were a series of trials and duties that Abraham fulfilled completely. They include: Leaving his family in Makkah, Building the Ka‘bah, Sacrifice of his son Ishmael, male Circumcision, guiding and preaching. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, "Five practices are characteristic of Al-Fitrah 'the natural inclination': (1) Circumcision. (2) Shaving the pubic hair. (3) Cutting the moustaches short. (4) Clipping the nails. (5) and depilating the hair of the armpits.
[36]. Abdullah bin Salam, a renown Jewish scholar who embraced islam in Madinah, during the time of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, then he invited his two nephews to Islam and said to them: You have learned that God Almighty said in the Torah: I will send from the son of Ishmael a prophet whose name will be Ahmad. Whoever believes in him is guided, and whoever does not believe in him is cursed. So one of them converted to Islam and the other refused to convert to Islam, so God Almighty revealed this verse.
[37]. Abraham was a prophet and messenger of Allah, and an ancestor to the Ishmaelite Arabs and Israelites. Abraham plays a prominent role as an example of faith in Islam. Abraham fulfilled all the commandments and trials.
[38]. Whoever believes and is baptized in Islam will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. Baptism is a Muslim sacrament marked by ritual use of water taking total bath after embracing Islam by bearing witness that none is worthy of worship but Allāh, and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, and that Jesus is the servant of Allāh and His messenger, and His word that He bestowed on Mary, and a soul created by Allāh, testifying that Paradise is real and Hell is real, and admitting the recipient to the Muslim community by performing the prayer. This rite is the personal and public identification with Allāh and His messenger Muhammad, accepting Islam as the only true religion of God and as a way of life. Baptism in Islam is a symbol of a believer’s dedication toward Allāh and his teachings and obeying His messenger, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It is the most important promise you can make in your life.
[39]. Pagans, hypocrites, and the unbelieving Jews. Qiblah here they mean the prayer direction towards Jerusalem)
[40]. Prior to the command in the Verse 144, they had been facing Jerusalem to the north.
[41]. Between negligence and extremism.
[42]. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was awaiting the command to change the qiblah (the direction of the prayer); so he used to look up at the sky.
[43]. Who persist in denying the Truth and are arrogant.
[44]. I.e., the Jews who face the temple mount, and the Christians who face towards the East.
[45]. Because of the descriptions of him ﷺ in the Bible.
[46]. I.e., the followers of the past Scripture.
[47]. It is no wonder that the message to “Fear not…” appears so frequently in the Qur’an. While fear is a common human experience, the Quran's promise is that Allāh is Our Protector, for Allāh is always with Us.
[48]. When a person rejects the Prophet Muhammad, God's messenger ﷺ, he is rejecting God, the Lord Whom sent him. Such is a grievous sin much worse than the other wicked acts. People should believe in the significance of God's sending of messengers. Allāh 'God' assures those who will accept and believe in the messengers sent by Him that they shall certainly receive their reward. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "Every prophet was sent specifically to his own people, whereas I 'Muhammad' was sent to all (people), white and black."
It is an obligation to everyone in order to receive salvation to bear witness that there is no deity but Allāh, and bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of God. This testimony declares belief in the oneness of God and the acceptance of Muhammad as God's last and final messenger. Whoever believes in Allāh and His messenger, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, will have eternal life.
[49].The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said, "Allāh says: 'I am just as My servant thinks I am, (i.e. I am able to do for him what he thinks I can do for him) and I am with him if He remembers Me. If he remembers Me in himself, I too, remember him in Myself; and if he remembers Me in a group of people, I remember him in a group that is better than they; and if he comes one span nearer to Me, I go one cubit nearer to him; and if he comes one cubit nearer to Me, I go a distance of two outstretched arms nearer to him; and if he comes to Me walking, I go to him running.' "
[50]. Rejoicing in hope, enduring in affliction, being devoted and faithful in prayer. Here is an evidence of Allah’s particular companionship with the faithful and patient; leading to His guidance and support.
[51]. Blessed is the one who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive much rewards and favors, which Allāh has promised to those who are patient during hardships.
When you meet with various trials consider it all joy, knowing as you do that this tested quality of your faith produces endurance. The various trial you face in life will put your faith to the test. But if you endure patiently the results are positive. You will gain more faith and a stronger relationship with Almighty Allāh.
[52]. Names of two small mountains in Makkah. They are reminders of God’s Love as Allāh settled Ismael and his mother Hagar in Mecca, near which they had found relief and water at the Well of Zamzam. Ismail is associated with the construction of the Ka’bah and considered the ancestor to prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
[53]. That He hears your prayers and forgives your sins, if you come to Him with pure heart full of submission, free of polytheism, hypocrisy, and arrogance.
[54]. Muhammad, God's messenger ﷺ said, “Whoever loves for the sake of God, hates for the sake of God, gives for the sake of God, and withholds for the sake of God, has perfected the faith.”
Whoever loves for the sake of God and hates for the sake of God, and befriends for the sake of God and shows enmity
for the sake of God, would get God’s closeness. Without abiding by this, no one can get the real taste (sweetness) of Faith though he may have been a frequent offerer of prayer and fasts. Today people keep relationship, and love only for some worldly reason but this will not provide them any benefit on the Day of Judgement.
[55]. Two conditions for consuming food: lawful, and beneficial; not harmful.
[56]. Believing in parts of it while disbelieving in others.
[57]. This also applies to the strangers and foreigners who are left without means whilst travelling, being away from home, and those aliens in a land they belong not to them and live with them.If a stranger or foreigner from other country stays in your land you must not cause him stress and anxiety. The stranger or foreigner that is resident in your land must be unto you as one born among you, and show him affection and mercy and treat him justly.
The prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
"Whoever killed an alien resident or a foreigner having a treaty and covenant with the Muslims, shall not smell the smell of Paradise though its smell is perceived from a distance of forty years." In another statement he said: "If anyone wrongs an alien resident or foreigner having covenant with the Muslims, detracts from his rights, treats him unjustly, burdens him with more work than he is able to do, or takes something from him without his consent, I will plead for him (that alien resident or foreigner) on the Day of Resurrection."
[58]. Not giving more than the allotted share of one-third.
[59]. This verse has been abrogated by the ‘inheritance’ verse, see Q. 4:11 and by the
saying of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: ‘Do not make testament for one [already] inheriting’.
[60]. Muhammad, God's Messenger ﷺ said, "Whoever observes fasts during the month of Ramadan out of sincere faith, and hoping to attain Allah's rewards, then all his past sins will be forgiven."
[61]. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ fasted either twenty-nine or thirty days during the lunar month of Ramaḍān each year, depending on the sighting of the moon. He would also engage in night prayers, dedicating time to communion with Allāh. Similarly, through fasting and prayer, a believer draws nearer to Allāh and gains clearer insight into His guidance.”
[62]. The provision of this verse has been abrogated by the next Verse 185, with a few exceptions, i.e., the very old or pregnant woman, etc.
[63]. A group of followers of the Prophet ﷺ asked him, ‘Is 'Allāh our Lord nearby so that we should talk to Him secretly, or is He far away, so that we should call out to him?’ Then this Verse was revealed. God’s nearness means that one need not raise one’s voice or ask for intercession for God to hear one’s Prayers and answer them. God takes on the answer directly to His servants without the need for intercession.
[64]. Muhammad, God's Messenger ﷺ said, "God said, ‘I will declare war against him who shows hostility to a pious worshipper of Mine. And the most beloved things with which My servant comes nearer to Me, is what I have enjoined upon him; and My servant keeps on coming closer to Me through performing extra good deeds besides what is obligatory till I love him. Then I become his sense of hearing with which he hears, and his sense of sight with which he sees, and his hand with which he grips, and his leg with which he walks; and if he asks Me, I will give him, and if he asks My protection (Refuge), I will protect him; (i.e. give him My Refuge), and I do not hesitate to do anything as I hesitate to take the soul of the believer, for he hates death, and I hate to disappoint him."
[65]. By secretly doing what was prohibited to you of having carnal relations with your wives during the nights of Ramadan.
[66]. Prior to this revelation, marital relations were unlawful during nights preceding fasting. Some were unable to refrain and secretly disobeyed, but Allāh accepted their repentance, and then it was made lawful.
[67]. Muhammad, the Messenger of God ﷺ said, “God has cursed the one who offers a bribe and the one who receives a bribe.”
[68]. A companion of the prophet said, i asked God’s Messenger ﷺ, "What is the best deed in Islam?" He replied, "To perform the prayers at their early stated times." I asked, "What is next in goodness?" He replied, "To honor your parents: for this is well pleasing unto Allāh." I further asked, "What is next in goodness?" He replied, "To participate in Jihâd for God’s Cause."
Here the verse emphasizes a balanced principle of justice in warfare. The command is to fight only those who initiate hostility against the believers—meaning combat is a response to aggression, not an act of oppression or conquest.
At the same time, it sets a strict moral boundary:
Do not transgress beyond what is permitted.
Do not harm non-combatants (women, children, elderly, monks, etc.).
Do not destroy crops, livestock, or places of worship.
Do not continue fighting once the enemy ceases aggression.
[69]. By abandoning the Jihâd in the Cause of God or withholding the money needed for it.
[70]. Let us not become weary in doing good, for Allāh will reward us, and at the right time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Let us do good to all people, especially to those who fight for the Cause of Allāh and the preachers who call the people to the Truth, and the family of believers in general who regularly attend the congregational prayers in the Mosques.
[71]. Pilgrimage and lesser pilgrimage to Makkah.
[72]. A sheep, a cow, or a camel.
[73].I.e., Fasting three days, or feeding six poor of Haram people (sanctified area of Makkah), or slaughtering a sheep or goat and distributing it among the poor of Haram people.
[74]. The months of Shawwal, Dhul Qa’dah, and Dhul Hijjah in the lunar year.
[75]. Here are the occurrences of the word Aravot in the old testimony:
Psalm 68:4 "Extol Him who rides upon the Aravot..."
Aravot = elevated desert plains.
A place where Allāh (God) is glorified, associated with His nearness and majesty.
Muslims glorify Allāh at ʿArafat in massive numbers on the most sacred day of the year.
Isaiah 40:3 : "In the Aravah, make straight a highway for our God..."
This is nearly identical in concept to preparing oneself at ʿArafat — preparing a spiritual path to God through submission, prayer, and repentance.
Joshua 11:2 "...and to the Canaanite in the Aravah..." Inhabitants of the desert plains: Just as ancient peoples dwelled and worshipped in these open plains, Muslims gather in ʿArafat to spiritually dwell, cry, and reconnect with Allāh the Lord, in a pure, open space.
Arafah is open wilderness. Flat land east of Mecca. Place of Divine Encounte. (Ps. 68:4) . Allah descends and hears the duʿā’ of pilgrims. Symbol of Judgment & Mercy, Prophetic call to repentance. Day of repentance, mercy, and Pilgrims purify themselves and seek nearness to Allāh.
The connection between "Aravot" in the old testimony and "ʿArafat" in Islamic tradition is not just linguistic, but deeply spiritual and thematic. Both point to:
A desert space.
A time of revelation or divine presence.
An act of human humility and submission
This may indicate a shared Abrahamic heritage of sacred desert worship — a memory preserved across generations.
[76]. I.e., Ihrâm, circling around the Ka‘bah and As-Safâ and Al-Marwah, staying at ‘Arafât, Muzdalifah and Mina, stoning of the specified pillars in Mina and slaughtering the Hady (animal).
[77]. In the valley of Mina i.e., the 11th, 12th, and 13th known as the 'Days of Tashriq' of the month of Dul-Hijjah. People are encouraged to remember Allāh in the form of Takbīr abundantly during these days of Tashrīq. That is to say, "Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, laa ilaaha illallaah, wallāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, wa Lillaahil-hamd" (Allāh is Most Great, Allāh is most Great, Allāh is most Great, there is no god but Allāh, Allāh is Most great, Allāh is most great, and to Allāh be praise)”.
[78]. I.e., the 12th of Dul-Hijjah.
[79]. I.e., remains behind a day more i.e., the 13th of Dul-Hijjah.
[80]. Muhammad, the Messenger of God ﷺ said, “Verily, the most beloved statement to Allāh is for a servant to say, ‘Glory be to You, O Allāh, and Your praises. Blessed is Your name, exalted is Your majesty, and there is no god besides You.’ The most hateful statement to Allāh is for a man to say to another man, ‘Fear Allāh!’ and he replies, ‘Mind yourself!’”
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) also said: “The most hated person in the sight of Allāh is the most quarrelsome person". This is one of the four traits of a sheer hypocrite. The other three being: telling lies, breaking promises and betraying pledges.
[81]. I.e., 1st, 7th, 11th and 12th months of the Islâmic calendar.
[82]. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, "From among the portents of the Hour are the following: "General ignorance (in religious matters), (religious) knowledge will decrease, fornication will spread, alcoholic drinks will be drunk (in abundance), men will decrease and women will increase."
[83]. I.,e., from what one does not need.
[84]. I.e., refrain from sexual intercourse during the menstrual discharge. The Qur’an and Sunnah allow all closeness except intercourse at that time. Jews avoided even sitting with a menstruating woman, while Christians permitted intercourse.
Islam chose the balanced way: forbidding intercourse but allowing affection.
It is prohibited also for a man to divorce a menstruating woman during her menses.
Allāh decreed that a woman should be divorced when she is in a state of purity, free from postpartum bleeding and menses, and during a time of purity when her husband has not yet had intercourse with her. This is the divorce that is prescribed according to the law.
Women are supposed to maintain proper hygiene and stop prayer and fasting during the period of the menses. They do not have to make up the prayers they missed during menstruation but the missed fasts during Ramadan they should make up. When the menstruating period is over, women have to perform ritual purification (ghusl, that is total bath) and resume prayer.
[85]. Clean and purify yourselves, stop to do evil. If we confess our sins, Allāh is faithful to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. let us cleanse ourselves from all the impurity of flesh and spirit, perfecting righteousness in the fear of Allāh. Ask Allāh to create in you a clean heart. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see Allāh in the Hereafter.
[86]. In as much as you sow your seeds into their wombs in expectance of yield.
[87]. In whatever position, given that intercourse takes place in the vagina not the anus and not during menstruation.
[88]. One of the most intimate and enjoyable experiences that a husband and wife can have together is enjoying foreplay, sexual intercourse and the climax called orgasm. That is, a husband and wife having sex together. Sexual activity as defined here includes foreplay, sexual intercourse and orgasm. Allāh designed our genitals for sexual activity to draw a husband and wife together and then to procreate.
This is also is a reminder that intimacy should not be only about physical desire; spouses should also intend righteous purposes—such as raising righteous children, showing kindness, and strengthening the bond of marriage—because all these count as deeds stored for the Hereafter.
[89]. This is the act of īlā’; vowing not to have carnal relations with one’s wife with the purpose of punishing her. Four months is the maximum time limit allowed for this state of affairs to go on. Otherwise, the husband who took such a vow needs to either correct his marriage, in which case he does not need to make up for breaking his vow and is forgiven by Allāh, or else he should conclude the divorce and no longer hurt his wife.
[90]. For the first or second time.
[91]. I.e., had sexual relation with them.
[92]. Prayers are mentioned in the midst of marital affair rulings, because of the hurtful feelings divorce can leave. Hence, people are reminded of the Hereafter, by virtue of being steadfast in their prayers. Prayer in another verse is a deterrent against vileness. Allāh has commanded us also in this verse because of His greatness and majesty, that mankind and jinn should stand up for Him only by way of humility and veneration. Hence the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “Whoever likes men to stand up for him out of humility and veneration, let him take his place in Hell.” That is because this is part of the might and pride that belongs only to Allāh. Thus making prostration to other than Allāh, making bowing to other than Allāh, standing like the standing in prayer for other than Allāh, swearing by other than Allāh, vowing by other than Allāh, slaughtering for other than Allâh, making tawaaf (ritual circumbulation) around other than Allah’s house (Ka’bah), having extreme love, fear, hope, obedience for other than Allāh just as the Creator (Allāh) should be venerated or even more extreme are all Idolatry deeds and the antagonists of the message of the prophets of God. If the one who stands by way of humility and veneration for someone other than Allāh – being living or dead – is a kind of idolatry, it is likewise the one who stands by way of humility and veneration for something abstract such as the national anthem/ pledge or flag; this is also idolatry. It is denial and disbelief in God and major hypocrisy. But standing up to greet a person is lawful unless the person that is being greeted is desires or requests for it. Allāh alone has the right that we stand up for Him out of humility, respect and veneration.
[93]. Or an imminent danger, and the like.
[94]. This directive was abrogated by those later revealed in 2:234 and 4:12.
[95]. This verse refers to a group of people who fled their towns in droves during a plague or a battle, fearing death, thus thinking that they would outdo God’s Will. In order to show them that they could not escape His Judgement and make them realize His bountiful favours, God took their lives to show them that He is capable of bringing about their worst fears, only then to give them their lives back again.
[96]. I.e., spending in the cause of Allāh in expectation of nothing but His reward.
[97]. I.e., Moses.
[98]. It is narrated that, "Between the first heaven and the one above it is (a distance of) five hundred years. Between each of the heavens is (a distance of) five hundred years. Between the seventh heaven and the Kursiy is (a distance of) five hundred years. Between the Kursiy and the water is (a distance of) five hundred years, and the Throne is above the water. Allāh is above the Throne, and nothing whatsoever of our deeds is hidden from Him." Muhammad, The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “The Kursiy in relation to the Throne is like an iron ring thrown out into the earth”.
It is also narrated that the Messenger of God ﷺ said: “In Surah al-Baqarah there is a verse which is the best of all the verses of the Qur'an. It is never recited in a house but Satan leaves: Ayatul Kursi - the Verse of the Kursi - .”
[99]. This is a great Islamic principle whereby no one is to be coerced to believe, but it is the duty of the believers to make sure that people know about Islam and what is right and what is wrong.
[100]. When the Qur’an talks about darknesses usually it is referring to a sinful path. Allāh is the light and Satan is in darknesses. Spiritually blind people are living in darknesses. They can’t understand the Qur’an or the Sunnah. They are blind and they can’t see that they’re on the path that leads to hell. We must all seek the light, which is only found in the Qur’an and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. We must all repent and trust in Allāh.The darkness can never overcome the light. The light leads to eternal life and the darkness leads to eternal damnation.
[101]. That is why we must get wisdom, get understanding. Wisdom teaches us what to do with knowledge. And true wisdom comes from Allāh only. Our knowledge always falls short, but Allah's wisdom provides what we need.
[102]. Charity declared is alright,
But given in secret shines more bright.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, "There are seven whom Allāh will shade with His shade on the day when there will be no shade except His: the just ruler; a young man who grows up worshipping his Lord; a man whose heart is attached to the mosque; two men who love one another for the sake of Allāh and meet and part on that basis; a man who is called by a woman of rank and beauty for adultery and says ‘I fear Allāh ’; a man who gives in charity and conceals it to such an extent that his left hand does not know what his right hand gives; and a man who remembers Allāh when he is alone, and his eyes fill up with tears.”
[103]. Give to those bound in Allah’s way,
who cannot earn their pay. The people may think them rich, but their true worth is plain to see. They beg not.
Muhammad, God's messenger ﷺ said addressing the believers: "Who can guarantee for me that he will never ask people for something, and I will guarantee Paradise for him?"
This means that whoever commits himself not to ask people for their money or seek their help to fulfill his duties, whether much or little, he (the Prophet) will guarantee for him Paradise. That is because refraining from asking people entails reliance on Allāh, and is proof of one's strong hope and trust in Allāh, the Almighty. So this person's reward is that Allāh, the Exalted, admits him to Paradise.
[104]. Muhammad, God's messenger ﷺ said, "The seller and the buyer have the right to keep or return goods as long as they have not parted or till they part; and if both the parties spoke the truth and described the defects and qualities (of the goods) honestly, then they would be blessed in their transaction, and if they told lies or hid something, then the blessings of their transaction would be lost."
[105]. Usurers stand like one beguiled,
by Satan’s touch, confused and riled.
Trade is lawful, but interest is banned. Muhammad, God's messenger ﷺ prohibited taking money for blood, the price of a dog, the earnings by prostitution, and the money paid to a soothsayer; and he cursed her who tattoos and her who gets tattooed, the eater of Riba (usury - interest), and the maker of images."
[106]. And give up interest based transactions completely.
[107]. By asking for more than your capital sums.
[108]. By receiving less than your capital sums.
[109]. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: “Whoever is hopeful that Allāh will spare him the hardships of the Day of Judgement, then let him grant deferral to a constrained debtor, or relieve him ˹altogether˺”.
[110]. This is known as the verse of debt, and it is the longest verse in the Qur’an.
[111]. Allāh favoured the believing community by not holding them to account for the thoughts that go on in their minds, unless they put them into action. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: “Allāh will not hold my followers accountable for the thoughts that go on in their minds, unless they speak it out or bring it into action”.
[112]. A reference to the heavy burden of rituals imposed by the Law of Moses upon the children of Israel, as well as the asceticism of the Law of Jesus to his followers.
[113]. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “Whoever recites the last two Verses of this Chapter 'Al-Baqarah', they will suffice him ˹as a shield from the evil˺.”
