1. Ha Meem¹.
2. The Qur’an is made up of such letters from the Arabic alphabet. The Arabs at the time of revelation were the unmatched masters of the Arabic language and yet when challenged were totally unable to bring anything like the Qur’an. Although these disjointed Arabic letters are referring to the inimitable nature of the Qur’an and its divine source, God knows best its meaning.

5. They say: "Our hearts are covered against what you call us to, there is a deafness in our ears, and a barrier between us and you, so do what you want; and so shall we do."

6. Say 'Muhammad': "I am only a human being like you. It is revealed to me that your god is only one God 'Allāh', so be upright to Him and seek forgiveness from Him. Woe to the polytheists:

8. As for those who believe and do righteous deeds, they will certainly have a reward never to be cut off.
9. Say: "Do you really deny (Allāh) Who created the earth in two days, and you set up equals to Him? Such is Allāh, the Lord of all beings."
10. He placed therein (i.e., the earth) firm mountains raising above it, and He blessed it, and measured therein its provisions in four days exactly for all those who ask.
11. Then (He) turned to the heaven when it was (yet) smoke, so He said to it and to the earth: "Come (into being), willingly or unwillingly. They said: "We come willingly."
12. So He completed them seven heavens in two Days, and inspired in each heaven its affair. We adorned the lower heaven with brilliant stars for beauty and as a protection. This is the Decree of 'Allāh' the All-Mighty, the All-Knowing.
13. But if they turn away (from you and your Message), tell them: "I have warned you of a thunderbolt like the thunderbolt (that fell upon the people) of ‘Aad and Thamud.
14. When their messengers came to them from before them and from behind them, saying, "worship none but Allāh", they said: "Had 'Allāh' our Lord willed, He would certainly have sent down angels. So we totally deny of that with which you are sent.
15. As for (the people of) ‘Aad, they were arrogant in the land without right, and they said: "Who is mightier in strength than us?" Did they not see that Allāh Who created them is mightier than them in strength, and they used to reject Our revelations.
16. So We sent upon them a furious wind in days of evil omen (for them), to make them taste the disgracing torment in this worldly life; but certainly the torment of the Hereafter will be more disgracing, and they will never be helped.
17. As for Thamud, We showed them the right way, but they preferred blindness over guidance, so the thunderbolt of disgracing torment seized them for what they used to commit (of sins) .
18. We delivered those who believed and guarded themselves 'against evil'.
19. (Consider) the Day when the enemies of Allāh will be gathered together to the
Hellfire, and then will be driven onward.
20. When they come close to it (the Hell), their hearing, sight and skins will testify against them as to what they used to do.
21. They will ask to their skin: "Why have you testified against us?" They will say: "Allāh caused us to speak, who made everything speak. He created you at first, and to Him you are returned."
22. You could not cover yourselves from your hearing, sight and skin lest they testify against you, but you thought that Allāh did not know most of what you were doing.
23. That (evil) thought which you thought about 'Allāh' your Lord has brought you into ruin. Thus, you are now utterly lost.
24. Then if they endure patiently, the Fire is an abode for them, and if they ask for favor, they will not be shown any favor.
25. We have appointed for them companions³ so they have made fair-seeming to them what is before them and what is behind them (of their sins), and the Word (the Decree of Allāh) proved true against them - among the nations of the jinn and men that have passed on before them - that they are certainly losers.
3. In the world, among the sinful jinn and men.
26. Those who deny (the Truth) say: "Do not listen to the Qur’an and make a clamor therein, perhaps you may prevail."
27. We shall certainly make those who deny (the Truth) taste a severe torment, and requite them according to the worst of what they used to do (of evil).
28. Such is the requital of the enemies of God - the Hellfire; for them therein will be the eternal Home - a (fit) recompense for their rejecting Our revelations.
29. The disbelievers will say: "Our Lord, show us those who led us astray from among the jinn and men that we may put them under our feet, so that they will be among the lowest 'in Hell'."
30. As for those who say: "Our Lord is only Allāh, then remain steadfast (to their belief of Islam), the angels descend upon them (at the time of their death), saying: "Fear not, nor grieve, rather, rejoice in the good news of Paradise which you have been promised."
31. We are your supporters in this world’s life and in the Hereafter, and for you therein (in Paradise) is all that your inner-selves desire, and for you therein is all that you may ask for:
32. A hospitable welcome from One All-Forgiving, Most Merciful 'Allāh'.
33. Who is better in speech than he who invites (people) to (the Way of) Allāh while he himself does (what is) right (and just), and says: "I am a Muslim."
34. Virtue and evil are not equal. Repel (evil) with deed that is better⁴, and thereupon the one whom between you and him is enmity (will become) as though he is a close friend⁵.
4. Allāh commands the believers to be patient at the time of anger, and to pardon and forgive and pray to those who mistreat them. See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.
5. Prayer opens ourselves, our feelings, and our relationships with others to Allāh, calling Him to bring His perspective into it all. The act of submitting our will and feelings to Him in prayer changes our hearts, slowly but surely. No wonder Allah's call to love our enemies is bound up tightly with a call to prayer: “Pray for those who mistreat you.”
35. But none can attain this except those who are patient; and none can attain this except one having a great portion of good.
36. If a whisper from Satan tries to turn you away⁶, then seek refuge by Allāh. He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
6. Or stir in you anger or lust or any evil thought.
37. Among (Allah’s) Signs are the night, day, sun, and the moon. Do not prostrate to the sun nor to the moon, but prostrate to Allāh Who created them - if you truly worship Him 'alone'.
38. But if the pagans are too proud (to do so), then those (angels) with (Allāh) your Lord glorify Him during the night and the day, and never are they tired.
39. Among Allah’s signs is that you see the earth still, but when We send down on it water, it stirs (to life) and swells. He Who revives it will surely revive the dead. He has full Power over all things.
40. Those who deviate from the right Way concerning Our verses are not hidden from Us. Is he then who is cast into the Hellfire better, or he who comes safe on the Day of Judgment? Do what you want. He is Ever-Seeing of what you do.
41. Those who deny the Reminder (the Qur’an) after it has come to them (are losers), for it is truly a Mighty Book⁷:
7. I.e., the Qur’an, protected by Allāh from any distortion or alteration.
42. Falsehood cannot approach it from before it or from behind it. (It is) a Revelation from (Allāh, Who is) All-Wise, Praiseworthy.
43. Nothing is said to you (Muhammad) except what was already said to the messengers (of Allāh) before you⁸. Your Lord 'Allāh' is certainly All-Forgiving, but stern in His punishment.
8. When people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Allāh (God). Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. If you are not familiar with the history of the prophets, you will not do well when you suffer any kind of slander or persecution in Allah’s Cause.
44. Had We revealed this Qur’an in a non-Arabic language, they would certainly have said: "Why are not its Verses well expounded (in our language)? A foreign (language) and (the prophet) an Arab? Say: "It is a guide and a healing⁹ for the believers. As for those who do not believe, there is a deafness in their ears and it is obscure to them. these are called from a far-off place¹⁰.
9. The Qur’an includes both curing and healing. Curing wounds, fevers, and diseases. But to become part of the Qur’an, part of the community of God’s people, part of the mosque's people. That is healing. Healing is hard work. It means being open to Islam. It means being open to Allāh (God). It means, first and foremost, acknowledging that you need Allāh. Healing means learning to live with what can’t be cured. Sometimes, healing means accepting that things can’t be fixed, and accepting that you are a beloved servant of God even still. Healing also means reaching out to other people. Even the people you don’t want to. It means building community and love and acceptance even with people you don’t like or understand. It means being willing to be honest, even if that means facing the parts of yourself and others that aren’t so nice. But there can be healing even in the midst of pain, and grief, and illness. There can be love and renewal even in the midst of brokenness. There can be hope in the midst of loss. There can be community even when the world tries to isolate us. And when we reach out, when we comfort people who are sick, and bring food to those who grieve, and are willing to be honest and compassionate with ourselves and others, and be there for people even when there’s no quick fix or easy answer; when we do that, we are part of God’s healing. We are God’s 'hands' in the world.
10. So they neither hear the call nor understand it.
45. We gave Moses the Scripture, but it was differed about. Had not a Word already gone forth from 'Allāh' your Lord, Judgment would certainly have been given between them. They are certainly in a disqueting doubt about it (the Qur’an).
