فَلَمَّا جَآءَ أَمۡرُنَا جَعَلۡنَا عَٰلِيَهَا سَافِلَهَا وَأَمۡطَرۡنَا عَلَيۡهَا حِجَارَةٗ مِّن سِجِّيلٖ مَّنضُودٖ
82. When Our command came to pass, [We overturned their cities], making the highest part its lowest, and We rained upon them brimstones hard as baked clay, one upon another.

مُّسَوَّمَةً عِندَ رَبِّكَۖ وَمَا هِيَ مِنَ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ بِبَعِيدٖ
83. Marked by your Lord — and such [blows of punishment] are never far from the wrongdoers.

:
11
۞ وَإِلَىٰ مَدۡيَنَ أَخَاهُمۡ شُعَيۡبٗاۚ قَالَ يَٰقَوۡمِ ٱعۡبُدُواْ ٱللَّهَ مَا لَكُم مِّنۡ إِلَٰهٍ غَيۡرُهُۥۖ وَلَا تَنقُصُواْ ٱلۡمِكۡيَالَ وَٱلۡمِيزَانَۖ إِنِّيٓ أَرَىٰكُم بِخَيۡرٖ وَإِنِّيٓ أَخَافُ عَلَيۡكُمۡ عَذَابَ يَوۡمٖ مُّحِيطٖ
84. And to [the people of] Midian, [We sent] their brother Shuʿayb. He said, “O my people, worship Allāh [alone] — you have no deity other than Him. Do not [cheat and] give short in measure or weight [16]. Indeed, I see you in prosperity, but indeed I fear for you the punishment of an all-encompassing Day.”
[16]. The cardinal sin of Lot’s people was lust, whereas the people of Shu‘ayb’s major sin was greed, for not being fair in trade and fordealing in usury 'interest', imposing on people illegal taxes, and cheating in the measure and weight.

11
وَيَٰقَوۡمِ أَوۡفُواْ ٱلۡمِكۡيَالَ وَٱلۡمِيزَانَ بِٱلۡقِسۡطِۖ وَلَا تَبۡخَسُواْ ٱلنَّاسَ أَشۡيَآءَهُمۡ وَلَا تَعۡثَوۡاْ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مُفۡسِدِينَ
85. O my people, give full measure and weight with justice. Do not deprive people of what is rightfully theirs, and do not spread corruption in the land by committing abuse.

بَقِيَّتُ ٱللَّهِ خَيۡرٞ لَّكُمۡ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤۡمِنِينَۚ وَمَآ أَنَا۠ عَلَيۡكُم بِحَفِيظٖ
86. What remains [lawfully] from Allāh [after giving others their due] is best for you [17], if you are true believers. I am not a keeper over you.
[17]. Lawful earnings, even if small, are more blessed and enduring than ill-gotten wealth, and whatever is left after giving full measure is best and purer than what is fraudulently gained.

قَالُواْ يَٰشُعَيۡبُ أَصَلَوٰتُكَ تَأۡمُرُكَ أَن نَّتۡرُكَ مَا يَعۡبُدُ ءَابَآؤُنَآ أَوۡ أَن نَّفۡعَلَ فِيٓ أَمۡوَٰلِنَا مَا نَشَٰٓؤُاْۖ إِنَّكَ لَأَنتَ ٱلۡحَلِيمُ ٱلرَّشِيدُ
87. They said, “O Shuʿayb, does your prayer enjoin you that we must abandon what our forefathers worshipped, or stop doing as we please with our wealth? Indeed, you are the only one who seems to be so forbearing and right-minded!” [spoken mockingly]

قَالَ يَٰقَوۡمِ أَرَءَيۡتُمۡ إِن كُنتُ عَلَىٰ بَيِّنَةٖ مِّن رَّبِّي وَرَزَقَنِي مِنۡهُ رِزۡقًا حَسَنٗاۚ وَمَآ أُرِيدُ أَنۡ أُخَالِفَكُمۡ إِلَىٰ مَآ أَنۡهَىٰكُمۡ عَنۡهُۚ إِنۡ أُرِيدُ إِلَّا ٱلۡإِصۡلَٰحَ مَا ٱسۡتَطَعۡتُۚ وَمَا تَوۡفِيقِيٓ إِلَّا بِٱللَّهِۚ عَلَيۡهِ تَوَكَّلۡتُ وَإِلَيۡهِ أُنِيبُ
88. He said, “O my people, have you considered — if I stand upon clear proof from my Lord, and He has blessed me with good provision from Himself? I do not desire to do [behind your backs] what I forbid you from doing. I only desire reform as much as I am able. And my success is only through Allāh — upon Him I rely, and to Him I turn in repentance.”
