7 : 9

كَيۡفَ يَكُونُ لِلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ عَهۡدٌ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَعِندَ رَسُولِهِۦٓ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ عَٰهَدتُّمۡ عِندَ ٱلۡمَسۡجِدِ ٱلۡحَرَامِۖ فَمَا ٱسۡتَقَٰمُواْ لَكُمۡ فَٱسۡتَقِيمُواْ لَهُمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ

7. How can there be a treaty for the polytheists with Allāh and with His messenger except those [of them] with whom you made a treaty at the Sacred Mosque? So as long as they are upright to you, be upright to them. Indeed, Allāh loves the righteous [who fear Him].

8 : 9

كَيۡفَ وَإِن يَظۡهَرُواْ عَلَيۡكُمۡ لَا يَرۡقُبُواْ فِيكُمۡ إِلّٗا وَلَا ذِمَّةٗۚ يُرۡضُونَكُم بِأَفۡوَٰهِهِمۡ وَتَأۡبَىٰ قُلُوبُهُمۡ وَأَكۡثَرُهُمۡ فَٰسِقُونَ

8. How [can there be a treaty] while, if they were to prevail over you, they would respect neither ties of kinship nor covenant of protection concerning you? They please you with their mouths, but their hearts refuse, and most of them are defiantly disobedient.

9 : 9

ٱشۡتَرَوۡاْ بِـَٔايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ ثَمَنٗا قَلِيلٗا فَصَدُّواْ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦٓۚ إِنَّهُمۡ سَآءَ مَا كَانُواْ يَعۡمَلُونَ

9. They have traded away the revelations of Allāh for a small gain, and have hindered others from His path. Indeed, evil is what they have been doing.

10 : 9

لَا يَرۡقُبُونَ فِي مُؤۡمِنٍ إِلّٗا وَلَا ذِمَّةٗۚ وَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡمُعۡتَدُونَ

10. They respect neither bonds of kinship nor covenant of protection in regard to a believer. It is they who are the transgressors.

11 : 9

فَإِن تَابُواْ وَأَقَامُواْ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتَوُاْ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ فَإِخۡوَٰنُكُمۡ فِي ٱلدِّينِۗ وَنُفَصِّلُ ٱلۡأٓيَٰتِ لِقَوۡمٖ يَعۡلَمُونَ

11. Yet if they repent, establish prayer, and give the poor-rate, then they are your brothers in faith. We explain the verses in detail for people who know ^[4].

[4]. When the Prophet (ﷺ) died and Abu Bakr became his successor and some of the Arabs reverted to idolatry, `Umar said, "O Abu Bakr! How can you fight these people although Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, 'I have been ordered to fight the people till they say: 'None has the right to be worshipped but Allāh, 'and whoever said, 'None has the right to be worshipped but Allāh, Allāh will save his property and his life from me, unless (he does something for which he receives legal punishment) justly, and his account will be with Allāh?' "Abu Bakr said, "By Allāh! I will fight whoever differentiates between prayers and Zakah as Zakah is the right to be taken from property (according to Allah's Orders). By Allāh! If they refused to pay me even a she-kid they used to pay to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), I would fight with them for withholding it." `Umar said, "By Allāh: It was nothing, but I noticed that Allāh opened Abu Bakr's chest towards the decision to fight, therefore I realized that his decision was right."

12 : 9

وَإِن نَّكَثُوٓاْ أَيۡمَٰنَهُم مِّنۢ بَعۡدِ عَهۡدِهِمۡ وَطَعَنُواْ فِي دِينِكُمۡ فَقَٰتِلُوٓاْ أَئِمَّةَ ٱلۡكُفۡرِ إِنَّهُمۡ لَآ أَيۡمَٰنَ لَهُمۡ لَعَلَّهُمۡ يَنتَهُونَ

12. But if they break their oaths after making their treaty and defame your religion, then fight the leaders of disbelief — for indeed, they keep no oaths as sacred — [fight them] so that they may desist [from aggression and hostility].

13 : 9

أَلَا تُقَٰتِلُونَ قَوۡمٗا نَّكَثُوٓاْ أَيۡمَٰنَهُمۡ وَهَمُّواْ بِإِخۡرَاجِ ٱلرَّسُولِ وَهُم بَدَءُوكُمۡ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍۚ أَتَخۡشَوۡنَهُمۡۚ فَٱللَّهُ أَحَقُّ أَن تَخۡشَوۡهُ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤۡمِنِينَ

13. Will you not fight a people who broke their oaths, decided to drive out the Messenger, and they initiated [the war] against you the first time? Do you fear them? But Allāh is more deserving that you should fear Him, if you are believers.
