1. Alif Laam Ra¹.(This is) a Book, whose Verses have been perfected, then spelled out from One Who is All-Wise, All-Aware.
1. The Qur’an is made up of such letters from the Arabic alphabet. The Arabs at the time of revelation were the unmatched masters of the Arabic language and yet when challenged were totally unable to bring anything like the Qur’an. Although these disjointed Arabic letters are referring to the inimitable nature of the Qur’an and its divine source, God knows best its meaning.
3. Seek forgiveness from your Lord 'Allāh', then turn to Him (in repentance); He will provide you with a goodly provision until an appointed term, and give every doer of good his good (reward). But if you turn away, then I fear for you the torment of a grievous Day.
5. They 'the unbelievers' enfold what is in their chests that they may conceal from Him. Even when they cover themselves with their clothes, He knows what they conceal or reveal. He is All-Knower of what is in the chests 'of mankind and jinn'.
6. There is no moving creature on earth but upon Allāh is its provision, He knows where it lives and where it is laid to rest². All is 'written' in a clear Record.
7. It is He 'Allāh' Who created the heavens and the earth in six Days and His Throne was over the water, in order to test you 'and thus to make manifest' which of you is best in conduct. If you 'Muhammad' say: "You will certainly be raised up after death," those who deny will certainly say:"This is nothing but plain magic."
8. If We delay in afflicting them with Our torment for an appointed time, they will certainly say: "What prevents it?" On the Day when it comes to them, it will not be averted from them and they will be encompassed by what they used to mock.
10. But if We let him taste a favor after some adversity has touched him, he will surely say: "The ills have gone from me." He is totally exultant and boastful;
12. Then, it may be that you would give up part of what is revealed to you 'Muhammad' and your chest feels straitened by it, because they say: "Why has not a treasure been sent down upon him or an angel come with him?" You are only a warner. Allāh is a Disposer of all things.
13. Or, do they say: He 'Muhammad' has invented this 'Qur’an'. Say: "Bring then ten invented chapters 'of the Qur’an' like it and call upon whom you can other than Allāh 'to help you', if what you say is true."
14. But if they 'whom you called' do not respond to you, then know that this 'Qur’an' has been revealed with the Knowledge of Allāh, and that there is no god (worthy of worship) except Him. Will you then be Muslims³?
3. I.e., submitters to God’s Will, after having been convinced by such evidence. Everyone who believes that there is no god except Allāh and that Muhammad is His Messenger, is safe. Only by belief in Allāh and Mohammad as His last messenger can we receive salvation. Not only knowledge about Allāh, but deep, sincere faith, demonstrated by following the Qur’an and the tradition of prophet Muhammad, God's last and final messenger.
15. Whoever desires (only) this worldly life and its luxuries, We shall pay them in full their deeds in it, and they will not be deprived of their just due therein.
16. These are the ones for whom there is nothing in the Hereafter but the Fire - for in vain are their deeds in it (the world), and worthless what they used to do⁴.
4. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: “Allāh would not deal a believer unjustly even (as to) a single good deed. He will be given for it in this worldly life and rewarded for it in the Hereafter. But the denier will be fed the rewards of his good deeds in this worldly life until when he comes upon the Hereafter there will be nothing for him to be rewarded for.”
17. 'Can such deniers be compared to' one who has clear proof from his Lord 'Allāh', and a witness from Him testified it⁵ and precded by the Scripture of Moses as a guide and mercy. It is these 'believers' who have faith in it. But whoever of the different parties (Jews, Christians, and all other nations) denies it 'the Qur’an', the Hellfire will be their promised meeting place, so be not in doubt about it. It is the Truth from your Lord, but most people do not believe.
18.Who is more unjust than he who invents a lie about Allāh? These will be presented before 'Allāh' their Lord, and the witnesses will say: "These are the ones who lied against their Lord." Certainly Allah’s Curse is upon the workers of iniquity.
20. These will not escape in the earth, nor will they have any protectors besides Allāh; the torment will be doubled for them, they could not bear to hear or see (the Truth).
23. As for those who believe and do righteous deeds, and humble themselves to their Lord 'Allāh', these are the occupants of Paradise, they will abide therein forever.
27. But the eminent ones of those who denied (the Truth) from among his people said: "We do not consider you anything but a man like ourselves, and we do not see any have followed you but the lowliest of us (and they did so) without thinking, and we do not see in you any excellence over us; rather, we think you are liars."
28. 'Noah' said: "My people, tell me if I have with me clear proof from 'Allāh' my Lord, and He has granted me Mercy from Himself, but it has been made obscure to you; shall we force you to 'accept' it while you are averse to it?
29. My people, I ask you not for wealth in return for it; my reward is only with Allāh, and I am not going to send away those who believe; they will certainly meet their Lord, but I see that you are a people behaving ignorantly:
31. I do not say to you that I have the treasures of Allāh or that I know the unseen, nor do I say that I am an angel, nor do I say about those whom your eyes hold in mean estimation that Allāh will never grant them any good - Allāh knows best what is in their inner-selves (and were I to speak such) -then I should be of the unjust.'
32. They said: "O Noah, Indeed you have disputed with us and lengthened the dispute with us, so bring to us what you threaten us with - if you are truthful!"
34. My advice will not benefit you, as much as I intend to give you good advice, if Allāh intended that He leave you astray; He is your Lord, and to Him you will be (all) returned (for Judgment).
35. Or do they say: "He 'Muhammad' has invented it 'this Qur’an'?" Say: "If I have invented it, then upon me is my crime, and I am clear of what you commit of crimes."
37. Make the ship before Our Eyes and (according to) Our Inspiration, and do not speak to Me in respect of those who work iniquity; they will surely be drowned.
38. He (Noah) began to make the ship; and whenever the eminent ones from among his people passed by him they ridiculed him. (Noah) said: "If you ridicule us, we too will ridicule you just as you ridicule.
40. Thus it was - until when Our Command came and the oven overflowed⁶, We said: "Carry therein two of every kind, a pair (male and female), and your own family - except those against whom the Word has already gone forth - and those who believe. And none believed with him except a few.
42. As it moved on with them amid waves like mountains; and Noah called out to his son and he was aloof: "My son, Embark with us and do not be with the deniers."
43. 'His son' said: "I will take myself to a mountain that will protect me from the water." Noah said: "There is no protector today from Allah’s Command except him on whom He has Mercy"; and a wave intervened between them, and he was of who were drowned.
44. It was said: "Earth, swallow your water. Sky, clear away." The water subsided and the command was fulfilled, and the Ship settled on mount Judi, and it was said: "Away with the unjust people."
45. Noah called out to his Lord 'Allāh' and said: "Lord, my son is of my family, and Your Promise is always true, and You are the Most Just of Judges."
46. 'Allāh' said: "O Noah, he is not of your family; he is 'one whose' work was not righteous, so do not ask Me that of which you have no knowledge; I advise you, lest you be of the ignorants."
47. "Noah' said: "Lord, I seek refuge in You from asking You that of which I have no knowledge; unless you forgive me and have mercy on me, I will be among the losers.
48. It was said: "O Noah, descend with peace from Us and blessings on you and on the people from among those who are with you, but there will be other nations whom We will allow them to enjoy life (for a while), then a painful torment from Us will afflict them."
49. These are of the news relating to the unseen which We reveal to you. You did not know them, 'neither' you 'Muhammad' nor your people before this, so be patient. The 'good' outcome is for the righteous.
50. To ‘Aad people (We sent) their brother Hud. He said: "My people, worship Allāh alone, you have no god (worthy of worship) other than Him; you are but inventors of falsehood."
52. My people, ask Forgiveness of 'Allāh' your Lord, then repent to Him; He will send on you clouds pouring down an abundance of rain (provision), and add strength to your strength, and do not turn away (being) wicked people.
53. They said: "O Hud, you have not brought to us any clear evidence (that you are a Prophet) and we are not going to desert our gods 'idols' for your mere word, and we are not believers in you;
54. We say nothing but that (perhaps) some of our gods have smitten you with evil." He said: "I call Allāh to witness, and do you bear witness too, that I am clear of (all) that you associate (with Him in worship) as partners,
56. I rely on Allāh, my Lord and your Lord. There is no moving creature but He holds it by its forelock. My Lord 'Allāh' is just and upright 'without iniquity' 7.”
7. I.e., A God of faithfulness and without iniquity. He is just, upright, wise, and upon a right course in all matters.
57. But if you turn away, then I have conveyed to you the Message with which I have been sent to you, and my Lord 'Allāh' will bring another people in your place, and you cannot do Him any harm. My Lord is indeed the Preserver of all things.
59. Such were the people of ‘Aad. They rejected the Signs of their Lord 'Allāh', and disobeyed His messengers and followed the command of every powerful arrogant, enemy to the Truth (and Justice).
60. They were overtaken by a Curse in this world and on the Day of Resurrection. ‘Aad certainly denied their Lord 'Allāh'. So away with ‘Aad, the people of Hud.
61. To (the people of) Thamud (We sent) their brother Salih. He said: "My people, worship Allāh alone, you have no god (worthy of worship) other than Him. It is He Who has created you from the earth, and made you its cultivators. So ask His forgiveness then repent to Him. My Lord 'Allāh" is Near, Answering (the prayers).
62. They said: "O Salih, you were one amongst us on whom great expectations were placed before this. Do you (now) forbid us from worshiping what our fathers worshiped? And as to that which you call us to, we are in grave doubt about it.
63. He said: "My people, tell me if I have clear proof from 'Allāh" my Lord, and He has granted to me Mercy from Himself - who will then help me against Allāh if I disobey Him? And you do not add to me except in loss:
64. My people, this she-camel of Allāh is a Sign for you, so leave her to graze on Allah’s earth, and do not touch her with harm, else a near torment will seize you.
65. But they hamstrung her, so he said: "Enjoy yourselves in your homes for three days (whereafter you will be destroyed). This is a threat not to be belied."
66. When Our command came to pass, We delivered Salih and those who believed with him by mercy from Us, and (We saved them) from the disgrace of that Day. Your Lord 'Allāh' is the All-Strong, the All-Mighty.
69. And certainly Our (angelic) messengers came to Abraham with good news. They said: ‘Peace.’ He answered: ‘Peace.’ And he made no delay in bringing a roasted calf.
70. When he saw that their hands not reaching for it 'the meal', he deemed them strange and conceived fear of them8. They said: "Fear not, we are (angels) sent to (chastise) Lot’s people."
8. He deemed their refraining from accepting his invitation and eating his food as an ill sign of malicious intent. If one turn down a good gesture it means that he does not want peace and is ungrateful.
73. They (the angels) said: "Do you wonder at Allah’s decree? The Mercy of Allāh and His blessings are on you, people of the house. He is Praiseworthy, Most Glorious."
75. Indeed, Abraham is forbearing, grieving10, ever imploring 'with devout prayers' and earnestly repentant.
10. I.e., sighing or moaning during supplication out of grief for people and fear of Allāh. Loving others requires more than good intentions and well-wishes—it requires being “devoted to one another, joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer”. It requires being willing to not only “rejoice with those who rejoice” but to “mourn with those who mourn”. It requires all of us. In a broken world, none of us escape unwounded—hurt and scars are deeply embedded in each of us. But deeper still is our love to Allāh and His last and final messenger, the Prophet Muhammad; love tender enough to draw out those thorns with the balm of compassion, willing to embrace both friend and enemy to find healing together.
78. His people came rushing to him, and since before they used to commit evil deeds. 'Lot' said: "My people, here are my daughters11 they are purer for you (than men), so fear Allāh and do not disgrace me with regard to my guests. Is there not among you (even) one right-minded man?
11. Women of our community available for marriage.
80. 'Lot' said: "Would that I had the power 'to overcome you', or could take refuge in a strong support.12"
12. He thought he lacked the necessary cover of protection, especially that of his own clan. But, in that dire situation, his Protector was none but Allāh Almighty. Mohammad, God's messenger (ﷺ) said: “May Allāh bless Lūṭ; he sought the support of ˹true˺ mighty Backing."
81. (The angels) said: "O Lot, we are the messengers of 'Allāh' your Lord; they (your enemies) will never reach you. So set out with your family in the darkness of the night - and let none of you look back except your wife, for whatever befalls them shall befall her. The appointed time (of their destruction) is the morning. Is not the morning near?
84. To Midian (We sent) their brother Shu’aib. He said: "My people, worship Allāh alone, you have no god (worthy of worship) other than Him. Do not give short measure and weight: I see you in prosperity, and I fear for you the torment of an all-encompassing Day.
85. My people, give full measure and weight fairly, do not deprive people of what is rightfully theirs, and do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption.
87. They said: "O Shu’aib, does your prayer enjoin you that we should forsake what our fathers used to worship or that we (should leave off) doing what we please with regard to our money? (You would have us believe that) you are indeed the only forbearing, right-minded man!"
88. (Shu’aib) said: "My people, have you considered if I have a clear Proof from 'Allāh' my Lord and He has provided me with a good provision from Him. I do not want to do behind your backs that which I forbid you. I only want reform as much as I can, and my success (in my task) is only from Allāh. On Him (alone) do I rely and to Him do I turn (in repentance)."
89. My people, let not opposition to me make you guilty so that there may befall you the like of what befell the people of Noah, or the people of Hud, or the people of Salih, nor are the people of Lot far off from you;
90. Ask Forgiveness from 'Allāh' your Lord, then repent to Him. Indeed my Lord is Most Merciful, Loving13.
13. Allāh manifests His Love in countless ways. In the sun that rises each day, in bird songs, thirst-quenching water, beauty, color, seasons, sacrifice, generosity, hope, peace, forgiveness, grace, and mercy, and the most important of all by sending His last and final messenger, the Prophet Muhammad.
91. They said: "Shu’aib, We do not understand much of what you say, and we see you to be weak among us, and were it not for your family, we would stone you, and you are not mighty to prevail against us."
92. (Shu’aib) said: "My people, is my family more esteemed by you than Allāh? And you neglect Him as a thing cast behind your back. Indeed, 'Allāh" my Lord encompasses what you do."
93. My people, do whatever you can, I will do (my part); you will come to know soon who it is on whom will descend the torment that will disgrace him, and who it is that is a liar. Watch, I too am watching with you.
94. When Our Command came to pass We delivered Shu’aib, and those who believed with him, as a mercy from Us, and the (mighty) blast seized those who did iniquity, so they became within their homes (corpses) fallen prone.
101. We were not unjust to them, but they were unjust to themselves. So their idols whom they worshipped instead of Allāh, were of no help to them when the Command of 'Allāh' your Lord came to pass. They 'the idols' only brought about their destruction.
103. In this there is, certainly, a sign for him who fears the torment of the Hereafter. This is a Day on which the people will be gathered together, and this is a Day that will be witnessed (by all of mankind, jinn, angels, etc).
107. Abiding therein forever as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except as your Lord wills. Indeed, your Lord 'Allāh' is the Mighty Doer of what He intends.
108. As for the blessed (that Day), they will be in Paradise, abiding therein forever, as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except as 'Allāh' your Lord wills. A gift which will never be cut off.
109. So, do not be in doubt as to what these (pagans) worship; they do not worship except as their fathers worshiped before. We will surely give them their exact share 'of punishment' in full undiminished.
110. We had certainly given Moses the Scripture, but they fell into dispute with regards to it. Had not a Word gone forth from 'Allāh' your Lord, the matter would have been judged between them. Yet they are in a disquiting doubt about this 'Qur’an'.
112. So be steadfast in the right Path (of Islam) as you are commanded, along with those who repented with you, and do not transgress - He is seeing of all what you do.
114. Keep up the prayer at the two ends of the day14, as well as during the first hours of the night15. The good deeds remove the misdeeds. That is a reminder for those who are mindful.
14. I.e., the morning, the noon, and the afternoon prayers.
15. The sunset and the late evening prayer.
116. If only there had been among the generations (whom We destroyed) before you, men possessing understanding to warn (their people) from making corruption in the earth, as did a few of those whom We delivered from among them? But those who were unjust pursued (only) the luxuries they were in, and they were wicked people.
118. If 'Allāh' your Lord had willed, He would certainly have made all mankind a single nation, but (He willed otherwise, and so) they will continue to differ.
119. Except those on whom your Lord has Mercy16, and so He create them "to choose freely". The Word of your Lord will be fulfilled: "I will Certainly fill Hell with jinn and men, all together."
16. I.e., guides them to single Him out in worship, and away from associating any equal to Him.
120. All that We relate to you of the news of the messengers is to strengthen your heart therewith. And there has come to you (in this Chapter) the Truth, a warning 'to the deniers', and a reminder to the believers.
123. To Allāh belongs the unseen (things) of the heavens and the earth, and to Him return all matters (for decision). So worship Him alone, and rely on Him. Your Lord 'Allāh' is not unaware of what you do.
