3. And (saying) that, seek forgiveness from your Lord 'Allāh', then turn to Him (in repentance); He will let you enjoy fair enjoyment (with a goodly provision) until an appointed term, and will give His 'abundant' grace on all who have virtues. But if you turn away, then I fear for you the torment of a great Day.
5. Undoubtedly, they (the unbelievers) fold up what is in their chests that they may conceal from Him. Undoubtedly! When they cover themselves with their garments (in order not to see or hear), He knows what they conceal or reveal. Surely, He is All-Knower of what is in the chests.
6. There is no moving creature on earth but upon Allāh is its provision, He knows its dwelling place and its place of storage². All is in a clear Record.
7. It is He (Allāh) Who created the heavens and the earth in six Days and His Throne was over the water, in order to test you 'and thus to make manifest' which of you is best in conduct. If you (Muhammad) say: "You will certainly be resurrected after death," those who deny 'the Truth' will certainly say:"This is nothing but plain magic."
8. If We delay the torment from them for an appointed time, they will certainly say: "What detains it?" Undoubtedly, on the Day when it comes to them, it will not be averted from them, and they will be encompassed by what they used to mock.
10. But if We let him taste a favor after some hardship has touched him, he will surely say: "The ills have gone from me." Indeed, He is totally exultant and boastful;
12. Then, it may be that you would leave some of what is revealed to you (Muhammad) and your chest feels straitened by it, because they say: "Why has not a treasure been sent down upon him or an angel come with him?" You are only a warner. Allāh is a Disposer of all things.
13. Or, do they say: He (Muhammad) has invented it (this Qur’an). Say: "Bring then ten invented chapters 'of the Qur’an' like it and call upon whom you can other than Allāh 'to help you', if what you say is true."
14. But if they (the disbelievers) do not respond to you, then know that (this Qur’an) has been only sent down with the Knowledge of Allāh, and that there is no god 'worthy of worship' except Him. Will you then, submit yourselves to Him³?
3. I.e., after having been convinced by such evidence. Everyone who believes that there is no god except Allāh and that Muhammad is His Messenger, is safe. Only by belief in Allāh and Mohammad as His last messenger can we receive salvation. Not only knowledge about Allāh, but deep, sincere faith, demonstrated by following the Qur’an and the teachings of prophet Muhammad, God's last and final messenger.
15. Whoever desires (only) this worldly life and its adornment, We shall pay them in full their deeds in it, and they will not be deprived of their just due therein.
16. These are the ones for whom there is nothing in the Hereafter but the Fire - worthless is what they did (of good deeds) in it (the world), and vain is what they used to do⁴.
4. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “Allāh would not deal a believer unjustly even (as to) a single good deed. He will be given for it in this worldly life and rewarded for it in the Hereafter. But the denier will be fed the rewards of his good deeds in this worldly life until when he comes upon the Hereafter there will be nothing for him to be rewarded for.”
17. So, is he who has a clear proof from his Lord, and a witness from Him recites it⁵ (equal to a disbeliever)? And before him is the Scripture of Moses as a guide and mercy. These believe in it. But whoever of the different parties (Jews, Christians, and all other nations) denies it 'the Qur’an', the Hellfire will be their promised meeting place, so be not in doubt about it. It is the Truth from your Lord, but most people do not believe.
18.Who is more unjust than he who invents a lie about Allāh? These will be presented before their Lord, and the witnesses will say: "These are the ones who lied against their Lord." Certainly Allah’s Curse is upon the workers of iniquity.
20. These could not be (able to) escape on earth', nor could there be for them protectors against Allāh; the torment will be doubled for them, They could not bear to hear (the preachers of the truth) and they used not to see6.
6. The truth, because of their severe aversion, inspite of the fact that they had the sense of hearing and sight.
23. Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds, and humble themselves before their Lord 'Allāh', these are the occupants of Paradise, they will abide therein forever.
27. But the eminent ones of those who denied 'the Truth' from among his people said: "We see you but a man like ourselves, and we see you that only the lowliest among us have followed you 'and they did so' without thinking, and we do not see in you any excellence over us; rather, we think you are liars."
28. 'Noah' said: "My people, tell me if I have with me clear proof from my Lord (Allāh), and He has granted me Mercy from Himself, but it has been made obscure to you; shall we force you to 'accept' it while you are averse to it?
29. My people, I ask you not for wealth in return for it; my reward is only with Allāh, and I am not going to send away those who believe; they will certainly meet their Lord, but I see that you are a people behaving ignorantly:
31. I do not say to you that I have the treasures of Allāh or that I know the unseen, nor do I say that I am an angel, nor do I say about those whom your eyes hold in mean estimation that Allāh will never grant them any good - Allāh knows best what is in their inner-selves 'and were I to speak such' -then I should be of the unjust.'
32. They said: "O Noah, Indeed you have already disputed with us and so you made much disputation with us, so bring to us what you threaten us with - if you are of the truthful!"
34. My advice will not benefit you, if I intend that i should give good advise to you, if Allāh has been desiring that He leave you astray (because of your arrogance and persistence in sin); He is your Lord, and to Him you will be all returned (for Judgment).
35. Or do they say: "He (Muhammad) has invented it (this Qur’an)?" Say: "If I have invented it, then upon me is my crime, and I am clear of what you commit of crimes."
36. It was revealed to Noah: "That none of your people will believe except those who have already believed, so do not grieve by what they have been doing."
37. Make the ship under Our Eyes and 'according to' Our Inspiration, and do not speak to Me in respect of those who are unjust; they will surely be drowned.
38. And he (was) making the Ark, and whenever the chiefs of his people passed by it, they ridiculed him. (Noah) said, “If you mock us, then indeed we too will mock you just as you mock.”
40. (Thus it was) until when Our Command came and the oven overflowed⁶, We said: "Carry therein two of every kind, a pair (male and female), and your own family - except those against whom the Word has already gone forth - and whomever has believed." And none believed with him except a few.
42. And so it sailed with them amid waves like mountains; and Noah called out to his son and he was aloof: "O my son, Embark with us and do not be with the deniers."
43. (His son) said: "I will betake myself to a mountain that will protect me from the water." Noah said: "There is no protector today from Allah’s Command except him on whom He has Mercy"; and the wave intervened between them, and he was of the drowned.
44.It was said: "O earth, swallow up your water, and O sky, cease (your rain)." And the water made to subside, and the matter was concluded, (and the Ship) leveled itself on mount Judi, and it was said: "Away with the unjust people."
45. Noah called out to his Lord 'Allāh' and said: "My Lord, indeed my son is 'also' of my family, and Your Promise is always true, and You are the Most Just of Judges."
46. (Allāh) said: "O Noah, he is certainly not of your family; he is of an unrighteous conduct, so do not ask Me that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, I admonish you, lest you be of the ignorants."
47. "Noah' said: "My Lord, I seek refuge in You from asking You about what I have no knowledge of; unless you forgive me and have mercy on me, I will be among the losers.
48. It was said: "O Noah, descend with peace from Us and blessings on you and some of the nations of those who are with you, and (to other) nations whom We will soon allow them to enjoy life (for a while), then will touch them from Us a painful torment."
49. These are of the news relating to the unseen which We reveal to you. You did not know them, 'neither' you (Muhammad) nor your people before this, so be patient. The 'good' outcome is indeed for the righteous.
50. To ‘Aad (people, We sent) their brother Hud. He said: "My people, worship Allāh alone, you have no god 'worthy of worship' other than Him; you are but inventors of falsehood."
52. O my people, ask Forgiveness of your Lord, then repent to Him; He will send on you clouds pouring down an abundance of rain, and add strength to your strength, and do not turn away as criminals.
53. They said: "O Hud, you have not brought to us any clear evidence (that you are a Prophet) and we are not going to desert our gods (idols) for your word, and we are not believers in you;
54. We say nothing but that some of our gods have possessed you with some evil." He said: "I call Allāh to witness, and do you bear witness too, that I am clear of all that you associate with Him (in worship) as partners,
56. I have put my trust on Allāh - my Lord and your Lord. There is no moving creature but He holds it by its forelock (and is under His complete control). Indeed, my Lord (Allāh) is just and upright 'without iniquity' 7.”
7. I.e., A God of faithfulness and without iniquity. He is just, upright, wise, and upon a right course in all matters.
57. But if you turn away, then I have conveyed to you the Message with which I have been sent to you, and my Lord 'Allāh' will replace you with other people than you, and you cannot do Him any harm. My Lord is indeed the Preserver of all things.
59. And that was (the people of) ‘Aad. They rejected the Signs of their Lord 'Allāh', and disobeyed His messengers and followed the command of every stubborn tyrant.
60. And they were followed in this world with a Curse and on the Day of Resurrection. Unquestionably, Aad certainly disbelieved in their Lord. No doubt, so away with ‘Aad, the people of Hud.
61. To (the people of) Thamud (We sent) their brother Salih. He said: "My people, worship Allāh alone, you have no god (worthy of worship) other than Him. It is He Who has created you from the earth, and has made you settle therein 'to develop it'. So ask His forgiveness then repent to Him. Indeed, my Lord 'Allāh' is Near, Answering (the prayers).
62. They said: "O Salih, We used to have such great hopes in you before this. Do you (now) forbid us from worshiping what our fathers worshiped? And we are in grave doubt as to that which you call us to it, suspicious.
63. He said: "O my people, tell me if I have clear proof from my Lord, and He has granted to me Mercy from Himself - who will then help me against Allāh if I disobey Him? So you would not increase me except in loss.
64. My people, this is thevshe-camel of Allāh, a Sign for you, so leave her feed on Allah’s earth, and do not touch her with harm, else a near torment will seize you.
65. But they hamstrung her, so he said: "Enjoy yourselves in your homes for three days (whereafter you will be destroyed). This is a promise not to be belied."
66. When Our command came to pass, We delivered Salih and those who believed with him by mercy from Us, and (We saved them) from the disgrace of that Day. Indeed, your Lord 'Allāh' is the All-Strong, the All-Mighty.
69. And certainly Our (angelic) messengers came to Abraham with good news. They said: ‘Peace.’ He answered: ‘Peace.’ And he made no delay in bringing a roasted calf (to entertain his guests).
70. When he saw that their hands not reaching for it (the meal), he disclaimed them, and sensed fear of them8. They said: "Fear not, we are (angels) sent to (chastise) Lot’s people."
8. He deemed their refraining from accepting his invitation and eating his food as an ill sign of malicious intent. If one turn down a good gesture it means that he does not want peace and is ungrateful.
71. His spouse standing (nearby), so she laughed9, then We gave her the good news of 'the birth of' Isaac and after Isaac (a grandson) Jacob.
9. From a position of concealment, veiled in her hijab. I.e., Sarah. Either, because the messengers did not eat from their food, or for being glad for the destruction of the people of Lot.
73. They said: "Do you (O Sarah) wonder at Allah’s decree? The Mercy of Allāh and His blessings are on you, people of the house. He is surely Praiseworthy, Most Glorious."
75. Surely, Abraham is indeed most forbearing, tender-hearted10, and oft-returning to 'God' in repentance.
10. I.e., sighing or moaning during supplication out of grief for people and fear of Allāh. Loving others requires more than good intentions and well-wishes—it requires being “devoted to one another, joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer”. It requires being willing to not only “rejoice with those who rejoice” but to “mourn with those who mourn”. It requires all of us. In a broken world, none of us escape unwounded—hurt and scars are deeply embedded in each of us. But deeper still is our love to Allāh and His last and final messenger, the Prophet Muhammad; love tender enough to draw out those thorns with the balm of compassion, willing to embrace both friend and enemy to find healing together until the word of torment proves true only against those who insist in rejecting the truth of Islam.
76. O Abraham, Turn away from this (pleading)! Indeed, your Lord’s decree has already come to pass: and surely there must be come to them a torment that cannot be repelled.
77. And when Our 'angelic' messengers came to Lot, he was anguished for them, and felt straitened for them, helpless11, and said: "This is a terrible day."
11. To offer them protection against his nation’s many violent homosexual men.
78. And his people came rushing to him, and since before they used to commit evil deeds. 'Lot' said: "My people, here are my daughters12 they are purer for you (than men), so fear Allāh and do not disgrace me with regard to my guests. Is there not among you (even) one right-minded man?
12. Women of our community available for marriage.
80. (Lot) said: "If only I had power against you, or could take refuge in a strong support.13"
13. He thought he lacked the necessary cover of protection, especially that of his own clan. But, in that dire situation, his Protector was none but Allāh Almighty. Mohammad, God's messenger (ﷺ) said: “May Allāh bless Lūṭ; he sought the support of ˹true˺ mighty Backing."
81. (The angels) said: "O Lot, we are the messengers of your Lord; they (your enemies) will never reach you. So set out with your family in the dark part of the night 14- and let none of you look back except your wife, Indeed, it will afflict her what will afflict them as well. The appointed time (of their destruction) is the morning. Is not the morning near?
14. They made their escape very late at night at the time of saḥar, i.e. when dawn was about to break: “
84. To Midian (We sent) their brother Shu’aib. He said: "My people, worship Allāh alone, you have no god (worthy of worship) other than Him. Do not give short measure and weight15: I see you in prosperity, and I fear for you the torment of an all-encompassing Day.
15. The cardinal sin of Lot’s people was lust, whereas the people of Shu‘ayb’s major sin was greed, for not being fair in trade and fordealing in usury 'interest', imposing on people illegal taxes, and cheating in the measure and weight.
85. O my people, give full measure and weight fairly, do not deprive people of what is rightfully theirs, and do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption.
87. They said: "O Shu’aib, does your prayer enjoin you that we should forsake what our fathers used to worship or that we (should leave off) doing what we please with regard to our money? (You would have us believe that) you are indeed the only forbearing, right-minded man!"
88. (Shu’aib) said: "O my people, have you considered if I am on a clear Proof from my Lord and He has provided me with a good provision from Him. And I do not want to differ from you (to do) that which I forbid you. I only want reform as much as I can, and my success (in my task) is only from Allāh. On Him (alone) do I rely and to Him do I turn (in repentance)."
89. O my people, let not opposition to me make you guilty so that there may befall you the like of what befell the people of Noah, or the people of Hud, or the people of Salih, nor are the people of Lot far off from you;
90. And ask forgiveness from your Lord (Allāh), then repent to Him. Indeed, my Lord is All-Merciful, Loving17.
17. Allāh manifests His Love in countless ways. In the sun that rises each day, in bird songs, thirst-quenching water, beauty, color, seasons, sacrifice, generosity, hope, peace, forgiveness, grace, and mercy, and the most important of all by sending His last and final messenger, the Prophet Muhammad.True love to Allāh and His messenger is powerful. True love for them never surrenders, won’t be silenced, and can’t be destroyed. Many waters cannot quench love. Rivers cannot sweep it away. Our strongest love is only a fractured reflection of His powerful love for us. He is the ultimate source of any love that is genuine, any love that holds fast.
91. They said: "O Shu’aib, We do not understand much of what you say, and we certainly see you to be weak among us, and were it not for your clan, we would stone you, and you are not mighty to prevail against us."
92. (Shu’aib) said: "My people! Is my family more esteemed by you than Allāh, and you have taken Him behind your backs? Indeed, my Lord (Allāh) encompasses what you do."
93. O my people, work (according) to your position, I am working (in God's way); you will come to know soon to whom will come a torment that will disgrace him, and he who is a liar. And wait, indeed, I am with you waiting (the result)."
94. When Our Command came to pass We delivered Shu’aib, and those who believed with him, as a mercy from Us, and the (mighty) blast seized those who did iniquity, so they became within their homes (corpses) fallen prone.
101. And We were not unjust to them, but they were unjust to themselves. So their gods whom they invoked instead of Allāh, availed them nothing when the Command of your Lord (Allāh) came to pass. And they added to them nothing but to their ruin.
103. In this there is, certainly, a sign for him who fears the torment of the Hereafter. That is a Day for which all mankind will be gathered together, and that is a Day that will be witnessed (by all of mankind, jinn, angels, etc).
107. Abiding therein forever as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except as your Lord wills. Indeed, your Lord is the All-Accomplisher of what He intends.
108. As for those who are blessed (that Day), they will be in Paradise, abiding therein forever, as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except as (Allāh) your Lord wills. A gift which will never be cut off.
109. So, do not be in doubt as to what these (pagans) worship; they do not worship except as their fathers worshiped before. And indeed We will surely pay them in full their exact share (of punishment) undiminished.
110. We had certainly given Moses the Scripture, but they fell into dispute with regards to it. Had not a Word preceded from your Lord, the matter would have been judged between them. Yet they are certainly in a disquiting doubt about it (this Qur’an).
112. So be steadfast in the right Path (of Islam) as you are commanded, along with those who repented with you, and do not transgress - He is seeing of whatever you do.
114. Keep up the prayer at the two ends of the day18, as well as during the first hours of the night19. The good deeds remove the misdeeds. That is a reminder for those who remember.
18. I.e., the morning, the noon, and the afternoon prayers.
19. The sunset and the late evening prayer.
116. So why not had been of the generations from before you (those) remnant (of good sense) forbidding from the corruption in the earth except a few of those We delivered among them? But those who were unjust pursued what luxury they were given therein; and they were criminals.
118. If your Lord had willed, He would certainly have made all mankind a single nation, but (He willed otherwise, and so) they will continue to differ.
119. Except those on whom your Lord has Mercy20, and for that He created them (to choose freely). The Word of your Lord will be fulfilled: "I will Certainly fill Hell with jinn and men, all together."
20. I.e., guides them to single Him out in worship, and away from associating any equal to Him.
120. All that We relate to you of the news of the messengers is to strengthen your heart therewith. And there has come to you in this one the Truth, and admonition, and a reminder to the believers.
123. To Allāh belongs the unseen (things) of the heavens and the earth, and to Him all matters are returned. So worship Him alone, and rely on Him. Your Lord 'Allāh' is not unaware of what you do.
