1. Alif Laam Ra¹. These are the Verses of the clear Book2.
1. See footnote to Qur’an chapter2: Verse1.
2. The clear Book is the Qur’an whose verses are clear with regards to its language and rulings, and all its meanings. A Book whose Truth is evident and which clears up that which is indefinite and inexact.
6. Thus will your Lord choose you, and teach you the interpretation of discourses (events and dreams) and make His favor complete upon you and upon the family of Jacob, as He made it complete before on your fathers, Abraham and Isaac. Indeed, your Lord (Allāh) is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
8. When (Joseph's brothers) said (to one another), "Joseph and his brother are dearer to our father than we, even though we are a group. Indeed, our father is in clear error."
9. (One of them said): "Kill Joseph or cast him (forth) into some land, so that your father’s face (attention) may be exclusively for you, and after that you may (repent and) become a righteous people."
10. One of them3 said: "Do not kill Joseph; rather, cast him down into the bottom of the well, some caravan may pick him up (and sell him) if you must do that."
15. So when they went away with him, and they all agreed that they should place him at the bottom of the well. We inspired to Joseph: "You will certainly inform them of this affair of theirs while they do not perceive it."
17. They said: "Father, we went off racing each other and left Joseph with our belongings, and a wolf ate him. But you will not believe us, even if we are truthful."
18. They brought his shirt stained with false blood4. (Jacob) said: "Rather, your souls has enticed for you a matter; but patience is most fitting. Allāh is the One sought for help against what you describe."
4. They had stained Joseph's shirt with the blood of a lamb but had forgotten to tear it, thereby arousing their father's suspicion.
19. A caravan came by and sent their water-drawer and he let down his bucket. He said: Oh, what good news. Here is a young boy. And they hid him as merchandise. But Allāh is All-Knowing of what they do.
21. The man from Egypt6 who bought him said to his spouse: "Make comfortable his stay, maybe he will be useful to us, or we may adopt him as a son." Thus did We establish Joseph in the land (of Egypt), so that We might teach him the interpretation of discourses (events and dreams). Allāh always prevails in His purpose, but most people do not know.
23. And she in whose house he was solicited him. She locked the doors and said: "Come on." (Joseph) said: "God forbid! Surely He is my Lord, made good my stay. Surely the evildoers (adulterers and all the sexually immoral) will not prosper.
24. And indeed she did desire him, and he would have desired her, had he not seen a proof (of God's Monotheism and Promise) from (Allāh) His Lord. Thus, that We might avert from him all evil and indecency. He was truly one of Our sincere servants.
25. She chased him to the door, grabbed him from behind, and tore off his shirt7. Suddenly, they found her master (i.e., husband) at the door. She said: "What is the recompense of him who intends evil for your wife except imprisonment or a painful chastisement?"
26. (Joseph) said: "It was she who sought to seduce me; and a witness of her own family bore witness: "If his shirt is torn from the front, she speaks the truth and he is lying.
30. And (some) women in the city said: "The wife of Al-Azeez 8 is seeking to seduce her slave boy. Love for him already filled her heart! Indeed, we see her in clear error."
31. When she heard at their (i.e., women's) guile, she sent for them, prepared for them a banquet, and gave each of them a knife, and said (to Joseph): "Come out to them." So when they saw him, they were so amazed 'by his handsomeness, and cut their hands, and said: "Perfect is Allāh, this is not a mortal man, this is but a noble angel."
32. She said: "This is the one about whom you blamed me, and I indeed sought to seduce him, but he abstained. If he does not do what I order him with, he will surely be imprisoned, and certainly will be of those who are humiliated."
33. (Joseph) said: "My Lord, prison is dearer to me than that to which they invite me. And if you do not turn away from me their guile, I I might incline to them, and become 'one' of the ignorants."
36. And two youth entered the prison with him. One of them said: "I saw myself (in a dream) pressing wine." And the other said: "I saw myself (in a dream) carrying bread on my head of which birds ate." Inform us of its interpretation. Surely we see you are one of the good-doers."
37. (Joseph) said: "There will not come to you both any food which you are provided, but I can inform you of its interpretation before it comes to you." that is of what my Lord (Allāh) has taught me10. I have forsaken the religion of a people who do not believe in Allāh, and they are deniers of the Hereafter:
10. As well as the interpretation of the dreams and events.
38.And I follow (Islam) the faith of my fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It is not proper for us to associate anything with Allāh11. This is of Allah’s Favor upon us and on mankind12, but most people do not give thanks13.
11. Here is an explanation of the reason behind this great favour: by way of calling them to Islamic Monotheism.
12. The favour of guidance to worshipping none but Almighty Allāh without associating any partners with Him in worship.
13. That is, they are heedless of this great favour and do not believe and worship only Allāh and Him Alone.
40. You do not worship besides Him but (mere) names which you have named, you and your fathers; Allāh has not sent down any Authority for them. Judgment is only for Allāh; He has commanded that you shall not worship anything but Him13. This (Islam) is the upright religion, but most people do not know.
13. Peoples’ utter ignorance leads to associating partners with Allāh in worship.
41. O my two, jail mates, as for one of you, he will serve wine to his master; and as for the other, he will be crucified, and so the birds will eat from his head - the matter is decreed about that which you both inquire.
42. Then he (Joseph) said to him whom he knew to be spared of the two: "Mention me in your master's presence." But Satan caused him to forget mentioning to his master, so 'Joseph' remained in the prison for several years.
43. (After some time) the king said: "I saw (in a dream) seven fat cows which seven lean ones were eating; and of seven green ears of corn and (seven) dry ones: "O you notables, explain to me my dream, if you can interpret the dream."
44. They said: "Confused dreams, and we are not knowledgeable of the interpretation of the dreams14."
14. Joseph was able to interpret it correctly while all the notables failed to do so was of singular importance and effectively played into his coming to prominence. Allāh had prepared him all along for this.
45. And the one who were spared of the two said, while he remembered (Joseph) after some time: "I myself will inform you of its interpretation, so send me forth."
46. (He said), "Joseph, O truthful one, explain to us seven fat cows which seven lean ones were eating, and seven green ears of corn and (seven) others dry, that I may go back to the people so that they may know.
50. And the king said: "Bring him to me." So when the messenger came to him, he (Joseph) said: "Go back to your master and ask him, what is the case of the women who cut their hands. Indeed, my Lord of their scheme is All-Knowing."
51. (The king) said (to the women): "What was your condition when you sought to seduce Joseph from himself? They said: "Allāh forbid15. We know nothing of evil on him.” The wife of Al-Azeez said: "Now has the truth become clear - It was I who sought to seduce him from himself, and he is indeed of the truthful."
52. (Then Joseph said: I asked for this) that he (Al-Azeez) may know that I betrayed him not in secret, and that Allāh guides not the plot of betrayers.
53. Yet I do not hold myself to be free (from the weakness of human nature); indeed, (man’s) inner-self is inclined to evil - except such as my Lord 'Allāh' bestows His mercy on. Indeed, my Lord is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
54. The king said: "Bring him to me, I will have him exclusively for myself." So when he had spoken with him, he said: "You are with us today in a high standing position, trusted."
56. Thus did We establish Joseph in the land (of Egypt) - he had mastery in it wherever he liked. We bestow Our mercy on whom We will, and We never waste the reward of the good-doers 16.
16. Allāh tells us here the lesson to be learned and heeded from Joseph’s life.
59. When he furnished them with their supplies, he said: "Bring to me a brother of yours from your father; do you not see that I give full measure and that I am the best of hosts."
62. He said to his servants: "Put their commodities into their saddlebags that they may find it when they go back to their family, so that they may come back."
63. So when they returned to their father, they said: "Father, (further) measure has been withheld from us (unless we take Benjamin with us), so send with us our brother, (so that) we may get that measure, and we will surely guard him."
64. (Jacob) said: "Shall I entrust him to you except in the same way as I entrusted you with his brother before; yet Allāh is the Best Guardian. He is the Most Merciful of the merciful ones."
65. When they opened their saddlebags, they found their commodities returned to them. They said: "Father, what (more) do we want? This is our commodities returned to us, and (if you send our brother Benjamin with us) we shall be able to bring (more) food to our family, shall guard our brother (well), and shall have in addition, the measure of a camel (load). This (that we bring now) is (only) a light measure."
66. (Jacob) said: "I will not send him with you until you give me a solemn oath by Allāh that you shall certainly bring him back to me, unless you are encompassed (by enemies).” When they gave him their solemn pledge, he said: "Allāh, over what we say, is Trustee."
67. And he said: "O my sons, do not (all) enter by one gate, but enter from different gates. And I cannot avail you anything against Allāh. Judgment is only for Allāh, on Him (alone) do I rely, and on Him (alone) let all those who rely put their full trust."
68. When they had entered from where their father had commanded them, it did not avail them anything against Allāh, but (it was) a need of Jacob’s inner-self which he fulfilled. And surely He was a possessor of knowledge because of what We had taught him, but most people do not know.
70. So when he had furnished them with their 'needed' supplies, (someone) placed the (gold measuring) bowl in his brother’s bag. Then a caller called out: "O caravan, Indeed, you are thieves."
72. (The King’s servants) said: "We miss the king’s (gold measuring) bowl and he who will bring it will have a camel-load (of grain as reward), and I am responsible for it."
75. (The brothers) said: "The penalty of this is (the enslavement of) the person in whose bag the cup is found17; thus do we recompense the evildoers."
17. I.e., be placed in servitude to the one from whom he had stolen.
76. So he began with their bags before the bag of his brother (Benjamin), then he brought it out from his brother’s bag. Thus did We plan for Joseph; it was not (lawful) that he should take his brother under the king’s law unless Allāh willed. We raise in degrees whomever We will. And over every knowledgeable person is one more knowing18
18. Until the knowledge ends with Allāh, the All-Knowing.
77. (Joseph's) brothers said: "If he steals, then a brother of his did steal before19." But Joseph kept it to himself and did not reveal it to them. He said (within himself): "You are in a worse position. And Allāh knows best of what you are describing (of slander)."
19. I.e, Joseph — he stole a golden idol from his maternal grandfather and smashed it, lest it be taken for worship.
78. (The brothers) said: "O noble minister, he has a father, a very old man, so take one of us in his place. Indeed, we see that you are one of the good-doers."
80. Then when they despaired of him, they secluded themselves talking privately. The eldest of them20 said: "Do you not know that your father took from you an undertaking promise in Allah’s Name, and from before that you failed concerning Joseph? So I will not depart from this land until my father permits me or Allāh decides for me (my case), and He is the Best of judges."
81. Go back to your father and say: "O our father, your son committed theft, and we do not bear witness except to what we have known, And we were not preservers of the unseen.
83. (Jacob) said: "Rather, your inner selves have enticed you a matter, so patience is most befitting; maybe Allāh will bring them back to me, all together. He is surely the All-Knowing, the All-Wise."
87. O my sons, go and inquire about Joseph and his brother (Benjamin), and despair not of Allah’s Mercy. For none despair of Allah’s Mercy except the denying people."
88. When they entered Joseph's court, they said: "Noble minister, hardship has touched us and our family, and we have come with poor merchandise, so give us full measure and be charitable to us. Indeed, Allāh rewards the charitable."
90. They said: "Is it that you are really Joseph?” He said: "I am Joseph, and this is my brother (Benjamin); Allāh has indeed been gracious to us. Surely whoever guards himself against evil and observes patience - then surely Allāh does not waste the reward of the good-doers."
94. And when the caravan departed (from Egypt), their father said: "I certainly smell Joseph's scent, were it not that you might consider me a dotard."
96. So when the bearer of good news came, he cast the shirt over Jacob’s face, so he returned (once again) seeing. (Jacob) said: "Did I not tell to you that I know from Allāh what you do not know?"
100. He raised his parents upon the throne and they all fall down before him in prostration21, and 'Joseph' said: "Father, this is the interpretation of my dream of long ago; my Lord (Allāh) has already made it true. He was indeed kind to me when He brought me out of the prison and brought you from the desert22 after Satan had sown enmity between me and my brothers. For my Lord 'Allāh' is Most Subtle to whom He wills - indeed, He is the All-Knowing, the All-Wise.
21. That of greeting and respect, not of worship, which was permissible before the time of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).
22. Allāh led many Prophets to the desert. Abraham, Ishmael, Jacob, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad all had desert experiences. It was in the desert that Allāh prepared Moses, Jesus and Muhammed. In the desert, we learn to rely on Allāh and trust Him. True safety isn’t determined by our location. It comes with trust in Allāh who goes with us regardless of where we are.
101. My Lord (Allāh), You have given me of the kingdom and taught me of the interpretation of discourses (events and dreams). (Sole) Originator of the heavens and the earth, You are my Guardian in this world and the Hereafter. Take my soul as a Muslim and join me with the righteous.
102. That is of the news relating to the unseen (which) We reveal to you, you were not with them when they they agreed together upon their decision, and while they were plotting.
107. Do they then feel secure that an overwhelming of God's torment will not overtake them, or that the Hour 'of Doom' may come to them suddenly while they do not perceive it?
108. Say: This (Islam) is my way: I invite to Allāh with insight23; I and those who follow me. And Glory be to Allāh, and I am not one of the polytheists.
23. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:
“A person who leads others to doing what is good will earn the same reward as those who do it.”
109. We have not sent before you 'Muhammad' but men from (among) the people of the towns to whom We revealed. Have they not then traveled throughout the land to see how was the end of those before them? And the Home of the Hereafter is best for those who (fear God and) shun evil". Do you not then understand?
110. (They continued) until, when the Messengers gave up hope and were sure that they were denied, Our Help came to them and whom We willed was saved. Our wrath is not averted from the guilty people.
111. In their stories there is a lesson for the people of understanding. Never was it (the Qur’an) a narration invented but a Confirmation of what preceeded it24, a detailing of all things, and a guide and mercy for a people who believe (the Truth).
