Ar-Rūm

آیت: 1

الٓمٓ

1. Alif Laam Meem¹.

1. The Qur’an is made up of such letters from the Arabic alphabet. The Arabs at the time of revelation were the unmatched masters of the Arabic language and yet when challenged were totally unable to bring anything like the Qur’an. Although these disjointed Arabic letters are referring to the inimitable nature of the Qur’an and its divine source, God knows best its meaning.

آیت: 2

غُلِبَتِ ٱلرُّومُ

2. The Byzantines 'Romans' have been defeated.

آیت: 3

فِيٓ أَدۡنَى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَهُم مِّنۢ بَعۡدِ غَلَبِهِمۡ سَيَغۡلِبُونَ

3. In the nearer 'and lowest' land², but they³ after their defeat, willl overcome⁴,

2. Palestine, Jordan and Syria.
3. the Romans, who were followers of the past Scriptures.
4. The Persians, who were Zoroastrians at that time.

آیت: 4

فِي بِضۡعِ سِنِينَۗ لِلَّهِ ٱلۡأَمۡرُ مِن قَبۡلُ وَمِنۢ بَعۡدُۚ وَيَوۡمَئِذٖ يَفۡرَحُ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ

4. Within a few years. To Allāh belongs the Command before and after5. On that day the believers will rejoice,

5. I.e., the defeat of the Romans by Persians in 615 CE and the defeat of Persians by Romans in 625 CE.

آیت: 5

بِنَصۡرِ ٱللَّهِۚ يَنصُرُ مَن يَشَآءُۖ وَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

5. In the victory of Allāh. He gives victory to whom He wills. For He is the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.
