118. And to the three41(Allāh also turned in mercy) who lagged behind42, (regretting their error) to the point that the earth became straitened to them despite its spaciousness and their souls were also straitened to them, and they knew for certain that there was no refuge from Allāh but to Him. Then He turned to them (mercifully) that they might repent (to Him). Indeed, Allāh is the Accepter of Repentance, the Most Merciful.
41. These are Kaʿab Ibn Mālik, Hilāl Ibn Umayyah, and Murārah Ibn Al-Rabīʿ, who were sincere companions but, for one reason or another and without valid excuses, failed to join the Messenger ﷺ in his campaign to Tabuk.
42. Whose case was deferred for Decree of Allāh.
119. O believers, fear Allāh and be with the truthful43.
43. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said, "Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. And a man keeps on telling the truth until he becomes a truthful person. Lying leads to wickedness, and wickedness leads to the Hellfire, and a man may keep on telling lies till he is written before Allāh, a liar."
Telling the truth is a vital habit for Muslims to live out as they are surrendering their lives to Allāh. They need always to live the truth, to cease and put off falsehood, and to speak truthfully to all people. We must strive for truth in our words and actions.
Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.
120. It was not (proper) for the people of Madinah and those around them of the dwellers of the desert to remain behind (after the departure of) God’s messenger, or that they prefer themselves over his self. This is because there afflicts them not thirst or fatigue or hunger in God’s Way, nor do they tread a path which enrages the disbelievers, nor do they attain from an enemy (to God) what they attain, but a righteous deed is written down for them thereby. Indeed, Allāh does not waste the reward of the good-doers.
121. Nor do they spend anything that may be spent, small or large, nor do they traverse a valley, but it is written down to their credit, that Allāh may reward them according to the best of what they have done.
122. It had not been (advisable) for the believers to martch forth (to war) all together at once. So why should not a band from each party of them march forth to devote themselves to acquire a deeper knowledge of the (Islamic) religion, that they may admonish their people when they return to them, so that they may be cautious (and act accordingly to their perfect religion of Islam).
