Al-A‘lā

آیه: 1

سَبِّحِ ٱسۡمَ رَبِّكَ ٱلۡأَعۡلَى

1. Praise and glorify the Name of the Lord (Allah), the Most High¹.

1. Give thanks to Him and praise His Name. For Allah is good and His love and mercy lasts forever.

آیه: 2

ٱلَّذِي خَلَقَ فَسَوَّىٰ

2. Who created (everything) proportionately,

آیه: 3

وَٱلَّذِي قَدَّرَ فَهَدَىٰ

3. And decreed their destinies, then guided.

آیه: 4

وَٱلَّذِيٓ أَخۡرَجَ ٱلۡمَرۡعَىٰ

4. Who brings out the pasture,

آیه: 5

فَجَعَلَهُۥ غُثَآءً أَحۡوَىٰ

5. Then makes it black stubble,

آیه: 6

سَنُقۡرِئُكَ فَلَا تَنسَىٰٓ

6. We shall make you (Muhammad) memorize (the Qur’an), you will not forget,

آیه: 7

إِلَّا مَا شَآءَ ٱللَّهُۚ إِنَّهُۥ يَعۡلَمُ ٱلۡجَهۡرَ وَمَا يَخۡفَىٰ

7. Except what Allah wills. He knows all that is apparent, and all that is hidden.

آیه: 8

وَنُيَسِّرُكَ لِلۡيُسۡرَىٰ

8. We shall make it easy for you (to follow) the easy Way (of Islam)².

2. I.e., the doing of righteous deeds that lead to Paradise. 

آیه: 9

فَذَكِّرۡ إِن نَّفَعَتِ ٱلذِّكۡرَىٰ

9. So keep on reminding, as long as the reminder should benefit.

آیه: 10

سَيَذَّكَّرُ مَن يَخۡشَىٰ

10. He who fears Allah will take heed,

آیه: 11

وَيَتَجَنَّبُهَا ٱلۡأَشۡقَى

11. But the wretched will avoid (the advice),

آیه: 12

ٱلَّذِي يَصۡلَى ٱلنَّارَ ٱلۡكُبۡرَىٰ

12. Who will (enter and) burn in the greater Fire;

آیه: 13

ثُمَّ لَا يَمُوتُ فِيهَا وَلَا يَحۡيَىٰ

13. Wherein he will neither die nor live.

آیه: 14

قَدۡ أَفۡلَحَ مَن تَزَكَّىٰ

14. He indeed will achieve lasting happiness who purifies himself (from evil),

آیه: 15

وَذَكَرَ ٱسۡمَ رَبِّهِۦ فَصَلَّىٰ

15. And praise the Name of the Lord (Allah) and prays³.

3. The five compulsory prayers and the additional prayers. 

آیه: 16

بَلۡ تُؤۡثِرُونَ ٱلۡحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنۡيَا

16. But you prefer the life of this world,

آیه: 17

وَٱلۡأٓخِرَةُ خَيۡرٞ وَأَبۡقَىٰٓ

17. While the Hereafter is better and more lasting.

آیه: 18

إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَفِي ٱلصُّحُفِ ٱلۡأُولَىٰ

18. This is surely in the former Scriptures,

آیه: 19

صُحُفِ إِبۡرَٰهِيمَ وَمُوسَىٰ

19. The Scriptures of Abraham and Moses⁴.

4. The ten scrolls of Abraham and the Torah of Moses.
