Al-Anfāl

1.They ask you (O Prophet) about the bounties (of war). Say: "(The decision concerning) the bounties (of war) is for Allāh and the messenger. So be mindful of Allāh, settle the disputes that is between yourselves, and obey Allāh and His messenger, if you are believers."
2. The believers are only those who when Allāh is mentioned, their hearts tremble (with awe, hope, and love of Him), and when His verses are recited to them - they increase them in faith, and upon their Lord 'Allāh alone' they rely1.
1. Those who hope in Allāh and put their complete trust in Him will renew their strength. They will rise high like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. The Prophet Muhammad said, “If you trust Allāh, He will provide for you as He provides for the birds, they leave their nests in the morning hungry and return with a full belly at dusk”.
3. They are those who keep up the prayer and spend (part) of what We have given them (for the Cause of Allāh).
4. These are the true believers. They will have high ranks from their Lord, and forgiveness, and an honorable provision (in Paradise).
5. Just as your Lord caused you to go forth from your home in truth2, though a party of the believers certainly disliked it3;
2. For the battle of Badr to fight for justice and peace.
3. As they felt disquiet about the distribution of war booty.
6. Disputing with you about the Truth after it had become clear, (and they went forth) as if they were being driven to death, while looking at it.
7. When Allāh promised you one of the two parties4 that it should be yours, and you loved that the one not armed should be yours, but Allāh wanted to establish the Truth by His words, and to cut off the roots of the disbelievers (in the battle of Badr).
4. Of the enemy, either the caravan or the band of Meccan fighters.
8. To establish the Truth thereby and abolish the falsehood, even though the criminals might dislike it.
9. When you (believers) asked Help from your Lord (at Badr)5, so He answered you 'saying': "I will assist you with a thousand of the angels following one another."
5. During the days of the Prophet (May the peace and blessing of Allāh be upon him) there was a hypocrite who used to harm the believers, some of the believers said, "Come (support) with us while we appeal to Allah's Messenger for assistance against this hypocrite." The Prophet replied, "Verily, no one should seek to me for assistance. Indeed, it is Allāh Who is to be sought for assistance and help."This is an attitude that shows complete dependence and reliance on Allāh. On the other hand, by creating a culture of seeking help and assistance from the people in the manner that is common amongst the ignorant, dependence on Allāh is removed from the hearts of people and is placed on these created beings rather than the Creator. This is a means to idolatry. When a living person asks the deceased person to supplicate Allāh in his favor; or to fulfill one's need, cure him from illness, give him something to which he aspires, or ward off harm from him, this is considered polytheism and idolatry, and it is similar to the idolatry committed by the Christians, who associate Mary and her son Jesus Christ with Allāh in worship by supplicating them or asking them, believing that they have knowledge of people's situations. Help and assistance should be asked from Allāh only and He is the One only who can grant it.
10. Allāh only gave this as good news (of victory), and that your hearts be at rest with it. Help 'and victory' comes only from Allāh. Surely Allāh is All-Mighty, All-Wise.
11. When (Allāh) caused drowsiness to fall on you (O believers, giving) as secure from Him, and sent down upon you water from the sky, (o purify you with it, and take away from you the evil 'suggestions' of Satan, and to fortify your hearts and steady 'your' footsteps thereby.
12. When (Allāh) your Lord inspired to the angels: "I am with you, so make firm the believers. I will cast panic into the hearts of those (pagans) who deny (the Truth and at are war with you), so smite above the necks, and smite off every fingertip of them (which holds a weapon).
13. This is because they opposed Allāh and His messenger (Muhammad). Whoever opposes Allāh and His messenger - indeed, Allāh is Severe in punishment.
14. This is (the torment as a consequence of your evil deeds) so taste it, and that for the disbelievers is the torment of the Fire.
15. O believers, when you confront in battle those who disbelieve (in the Truth), do not turn your backs on them.
16. For whoever turns his back to them on that day, except while maneuvering for battle or siding towards some detachment, then he, indeed, becomes deserving of Allah’s wrath, and his abode is Gehinnom - what a miserable destination.
17.So It was not you (believers) who slew them but God slew them (the warring pagans). And you did not threw when you threw (a handful of dust at the enemy)6, but it was God Who threw, and that He might test the believers by a fair trial from Him7. Indeed, Allāh is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
6. God caused it to fill the eyes and nose of every soldier, preventing their advance.
7. So that they would appreciate God's favor to them.
18. That (is so), and 'also' that Allāh will weaken the plots of the disbelievers.
19. If you (pagans) sought God’s decision, the decision (i.e., defeat) has indeed come on you. But If you desist (to do iniquities)8, it will be better for you. If you return (to war), We shall return also (to assist the believers against you). Your community will benefit you nothing, though they may be many. And that Allāh is with the believers.
8. That is, relinquish your ways of associating with Allāh and denying His Message.
20. O believers, obey Allāh and His messenger (Muhammad). Do not turn back from Him while you hear.
21. Do not be like those who said: "We hear, and they hear not."
22. The worst of living creatures in God’s Sight, are the deaf, the dumb, those who do not heed (i.e., the deniers of the Truth).
23. Had Allāh known any good in them, He would have made them hear, and if He makes them hear, they would turn away while they withdraw.
24. O believers, answer (the Call of) Allāh and His messenger (Muhammad) when he calls you to that which gives you life9. Know that Allāh intervenes between a person and (the desires of) his heart, and that to Him you shall be (all) gathered (for Judgment).
9. I.e., going for war against the forces of evil.
25. And guard yourselves against a temptation which may not affect only those of you who did iniquity10. Know that Allāh is Severe in punishment
10. But it may afflict all the good and bad people.
26. Remember when you were few, oppressed in the land, fearing lest people might snatch you, but He sheltered you and strengthened you with His aid and provided you of the good things that you may give thanks 'to Him'.
27. O believers, be not unfaithful to Allāh and the Messenger (Muhammad), nor be unfaithful to your trusts while you know.
28. Know that your wealth and your children are but a trial11, and that Allāh is He with Whom there is a great reward.
11. Due to your love for money and children, you may violate Allah’s commands concerning them.
29. O believers, If you fear Allāh, He will grant you a criterion (to discern right from wrong), and will expiate for you your sins, and forgive you. For Allāh is the possessor of great bounty.
30. (Remember) when those who disbelieved plotted against you (Muhammad) to confine you or to kill you or to drive you away. They are plotting and Allāh too plans (against them). For Allāh is the Best of planners.
31. When Our Verses are recited to them, they say: "We have already heard. Had we willed, we would indeed say the like of this; this is not more than the legends of the ancients."
32. And as they said: "God, If this is the Truth from You, then rain upon us stones from the sky or inflict on us a painful torment.
33. But Allāh 'God' would not chastise them while you 'Muhammad' are among them, nor will He chastise them while yet they ask for forgiveness.
34. And why should Allāh not chastise them while they hinder (people) from (entering) the Sacred Mosque (at Makkah)? And they (the pagans) are not its rightful patrons; its true patrons are only the righteous, but most of them do not know.
35. And their prayer at the House (the Ka’bah) was not except whistling and capping. So taste the Chastisement for your disbelief (of the Truth and opposing the Peace).
36. Indeed, those who disbelieve (in the Truth) spend their wealth to hinder (people) from the Way of Allāh (Islam); so they will spend it, then it will be to them an intense regret, then they will be overcome. Those who deny 'the Truth' will be gathered together to Gehinnom 'Hell'.
37. That Allāh may separate the bad from the good, and put the bad ones, some of them upon the other, and heap them all together, then cast them into Gehinnom (Hell) - these it is that are the losers.
38. Say to those who disbelieve (in the Truth), if they desist (and believe), that which is past will be forgiven to them; but if they return 'to hostility', then the precedent of the former (sinful people) has already passed.
39. Fight them until there is no temptation (and idolatry is no longer dominant) and the obedience is all for Allāh alone12. But if they cease13, certainly Allāh sees what they do.
12. The believers are commanded to fight the deniers until their hostile behaviour is controlled, and until the believers are free to practice their religion without anyone daring to interfere with their worship or turn them away from their religion, and until peace prevails and people are able to freely worship Allāh alone without associating anything with Him. Muhammad, God's Messenger said, "He who dies without having fought in the Cause of Allah or without having thought of doing so, will die with one characteristic of hypocrisy in him.'' It is a different matter that one may not get a chance to take part in Jihad, but it would be a hypocritical attitude if one does not ever think that if an opportunity ever comes in his way, he will certainly go for
Jihad in the way of Allah against the infidels. The reason to that is that, to stay back at home at the time of Jihad was
a habit of the hypocrites. He who neither performs a good deed nor aspires for it, has a hypocritical disposition. This is specially true of a Muslim who does not even aspire to take part in Jihad. Such a
Muslim develops a resemblance with hypocrites.
13. To persist in idolatry and hostilities towards the believers.
40. But if they turn away, then know that Allāh is your Patron; a Most Excellent Patron, and a Most Excellent Helper.
41. Know that whatever of war-booty you may gain, a fifth of it is for Allāh and for the Messenger14, for 'his' close relatives15, the orphans, the destitute, the 'stranded' traveler (stranger and alien resident), if you believe in Allāh and what We sent down (of revelation, angels and victory) to Our servant (Muhammad) on the day of distinction 'between right and wrong', the day on which the two armies met (at the battle of Badr). Allāh has full Power over everything.
14. To be spent in the cause of Allāh.
15. The tribes of Banu Hāshim and Banu Abdul Muṭṭalib, who are not eligible for Zakah.
42. (Recall) when you were on the nearer side (of) the valley and they (the enemy) were on the further side, and the caravan was below you. If you had mutually made an appointment, you would certainly have broken away from the appointment, but - (it was) so, that Allāh might bring about a matter that was to be done, that he who would perish might perish on clear Proof, and he who would live might live 'decently' by clear Proof. Allah is certainly All-Hearing, All-Knowing;
43. When Allah showed (the enemy) to you in your dream as few 'in number'. If He had shown them to you (Muhammad) as many, you (believers) would certainly have lost heart, and you would have disputed about the matter, but Allāh saved you. Indeed, He is the Knower of what is in the chests.
44. When He showed you (the pagans' army) as few in your eyes, when you met (in the battle-field), just as He made you appear a few in their eyes, so that Allah might accomplish a matter that was to be fulfilled. To Allāh are 'all' matters returned (for decision).
45. O believers, when you meet (an enemy) force in battle - then be firm, and remember Allāh much, that you may succeed.
46. And obey Allāh and His messenger (Muhammad). Do not dispute lest you lose heart and would depart your strength. Be patient. Indeed, Allāh is with the patient.
47. Do not be like (the pagans) who marched out from their homes boastfully and to show off their strength to people, turning 'people' away from the Way of God. And Allah is Encompassing whatever they do.
48. When Satan made their (pagans') deeds fair seeming to them, and said: "No one of mankind can overcome you this day, and I am your protector." But when the two parties (the believers and the unbelievers) came in sight of each other (at the battle of Badr), he (Satan) turned on his heels, and said: "Indeed, I have nothing to do with you, for I certainly see what you do not see. I fear Allāh. Allāh is Severe in punishment.
49. When the hypocrites and those in whose hearts was disease 'of doubt', said: "These (believers) are deluded by their religion." But whoever trusts in Allāh (will find that) Allāh is All-Mighty, All-Wise.
50. If only you could see (how it will be) when the angels will cause to die those who deny (God and His messenger Muhammad), smiting their faces and their backs, and (saying): Taste the torment of the burning Fire -
51. This is for what your own hands have sent forth (of evil), and because Allāh is not in the least unjust to (His) slaves (of mankind and jinn)."
52. (Their deeds are) like the manner of Pharaoh’s people and those before them. They disbelieved in Allah’s Signs, so Allāh seized them for their sins. Indeed, Allāh is All-Strong, Severe in Punishment.
53. That is because Allāh would never change a favor which He has bestowed upon a people until they first change that which is in their own selves (of goodness); and that Allāh is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
54. (Their deeds are) like the manner of Pharaoh’s people and those before them. They denied the Revelations of their Lord (Allāh), so We destroyed them for their sins and We drowned Pharaoh’s people, and they were all unjust.
55. The worst of living creatures in Allah’s Sight are those who persist in denial, so they will not believe.
56. Those with whom you make a treaty, then they break their pledge every time, and they do not guard against evil.
57. Should you encounter them in the war, then deal with them so as to disperse those who are behind them, that they may take heed.
58. If you fear treachery from certain people, then throw back (their treaty) to them (so as to be) on equal terms (that there will be no more treaty between you). Indeed, Allāh does not like the treacherous.
59. And let not think those who disbelieve they have outstripped. Indeed, they will not cause failure (to Allah).
60. Prepare against them16 whatever strength you can and horses 'war mounts' tied at the frontier, to deter thereby the enemy of Allāh and your enemy and others behind them17 whom you do not know, Allāh knows them. Whatever thing you will spend in Allah’s Cause, it will be paid back to you fully, and you shall not be wronged.
16. Muhammad, God's messenger (may peace and blessings be upon him) said on the pulpit: "Prepare against them 'the forces of evil and enemies of Peace'. whatever you are able of power": Indeed, power is in shooting. Indeed, power is in shooting. Indeed, power is in shooting."
This statement of the Prophet explains the type of power that Muslims are commanded to adopt in combating the enemies: shooting, because it is more effective. When the verse was revealed, archery was prevalent. However, the miraculous indications of the verse suggest that this power is not time-bound. It involves all types and tools of shooting in any time and place, and with any weapon.
Muhammad, God's messenger said: "Lands shall be laid open to you, and Allah will suffice you (against your enemies), but none of you should neglect practicing his skill in archery.''
The Prophet Muhammad happened to pass by a group of people who were having a shooting match. (Upon seeing them, he said, "Shoot, O sons of (Prophet) Ishmael, for your father was an archer.'' Arabs are also called Banu Isma`il because they are the descendants of Prophet Ibrahim's son,
Ishmael. This is the reason that Prophet Ibrahim is reckoned an ancestor of the Prophet Muhammad for his being his descendant.
17. The hypocrites and the other deniers who are not a source of threat to you now but may be so in the future.
61. If they18 incline to peace, then incline to it, and trust in Allāh. For He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
18. The deniers who are at war with you.
62. If they intend to deceive you, then Allāh is certainly Enough for you. It is He Who strengthened you and the believers with His help.
63. And united their hearts. Had you spent all that is in the earth, you could not have united their hearts, but Allāh united them. For, He is All-Mighty, All-Wise.
64. O prophet, Allāh is Enough for you and for the believers who follow you.
65.O prophet, urge the believers to 'go to' war. If there are twenty of you who are steadfast, they will overcome two hundred. If there are a hundred of you, they will overcome a thousand of those who disbelieve 'in the Truth', because they are a people who do not understand.
66. Now Allāh has lightened your burden, for He knows that there is weakness in you. So if there are a hundred of you who are steadfast, they will overcome two hundred, and if there are a thousand of you, they will overcome two thousand by Allah’s Permission. Allāh is with the steadfast.
67. It is not befitting for a Prophet that he should have prisoners of war (and free them with ransom) until he has conquered (the enemy) in the land. You desire the trivial goods of this world, while Allāh desires (for you) the Hereafter. For Allāh is All-Mighty, All-Wise.
68. Were it not for an ordinance from Allāh that had already gone forth, there would have befallen you for what you took (of ransom) a tremendous Chastisement.
69. Eat then what you have gained in war (of booty and ransom), lawful and good. Fear Allāh (and shun evil). Indeed, Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
70. O prophet, say to those of the captives who are in your hands: If Allāh knows anything good in your hearts, He will give to you better than that which has been taken away from you, and will forgive you. For Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
71. But if they intend to betray you - then indeed they had betrayed Allāh before. So He gave 'you' power over them. For Allāh is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
72. Those who believed, migrated, and strove hard for the Cause of Allāh with their wealth and their lives, and those who gave shelter and helped, these are allies one to another. As for those who believed and did not emigrate, you do not owe them any protection until they emigrate. But if they seek aid from you in the matter of religion, aid is incumbent on you, except against a people with whom you have a treaty. (Know that) Allāh sees what you do.
73. Those who disbelieve (in the Truth), some of them are allies of others19. if you (believers) do not do it (i.e., make close alliances to one other), there will be turmoil (and widespread idolatry) in the land and massive corruption.
19. This is to further state the relation of the believers among themselves, so that they would abandon their other alliances with the deniers, who are ever allied with each other against the believers.
74. Those who believed, emigrated and strove hard for the Cause of Allāh, and those who gave shelter and helped, these are the believers truly. For them is forgiveness and an honorable provision.
75. Those who have believed afterwards, emigrated and strove hard along with you, they are of you. But those who are blood relations are more entitled to inherit from one another in the Decree of Allāh. Allāh has Knowledge of every thing.
