Al-Qalam

1 : 68

نٓۚ وَٱلۡقَلَمِ وَمَا يَسۡطُرُونَ

1. Noon ^[1]. By the Pen, and what they (the angels) inscribe.

[1]. See footnote to Qur’an chapter2: Verse1.

2 : 68

مَآ أَنتَ بِنِعۡمَةِ رَبِّكَ بِمَجۡنُونٖ

2. You are not, [O Muhammad], by the grace of your your Lord, insane ^[2].

[2]. As the pagans claimed.

3 : 68

وَإِنَّ لَكَ لَأَجۡرًا غَيۡرَ مَمۡنُونٖ

3. And indeed, you (O Muhammad) will surely have a reward uninterrupted.

4 : 68

وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٖ

4. And indeed, you (O Muhammad) are surely of a great moral character.

5 : 68

فَسَتُبۡصِرُ وَيُبۡصِرُونَ

5. Soon you will see and they (the pagans) will see,

6 : 68

بِأَييِّكُمُ ٱلۡمَفۡتُونُ

6. Whichever of you is the afflicted (by devil).

7 : 68

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِٱلۡمُهۡتَدِينَ

7. Indeed, your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His way, and He knows best who is 'rightly' guided.

8 : 68

فَلَا تُطِعِ ٱلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ

8. So do not obey the deniers (of the Truth).

9 : 68

وَدُّواْ لَوۡ تُدۡهِنُ فَيُدۡهِنُونَ

9. They wish that you would soften ^[3], so they would soften too. 

[3]. In your position about the fundamentals of Islam - the true religion of God, so that to meet in the middle, between belief and unbelief.

10 : 68

وَلَا تُطِعۡ كُلَّ حَلَّافٖ مَّهِينٍ

10. And obey not any worthless contemptible swearer ^[4],

[4]. Muhammad, God's Messenger said, "There are three (types on people with whom Allah will neither speak on the Day of Resurection nor purify them (from sins) and there will be a painful chastisement for them: A person who has spare water in a desert and he refuses to give it to the traveller; a person who sells a commodity to another person after the afternoon prayer and swears by Allah that he has bought it at such and such price, and the buyer pays him accordingly though in reality it was not true; and a person who pledges allegiance to a ruler just for some worldly benefit, and then if the ruler bestows on him (something out of that) he fulfills his allegiance, and if does not give him he does not fulfill it."

11 : 68

هَمَّازٖ مَّشَّآءِۭ بِنَمِيمٖ

11. A slanderer, a backbiter.

12 : 68

مَّنَّاعٖ لِّلۡخَيۡرِ مُعۡتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ

12. Withholder of good, transgressor, sinful,

13 : 68

عُتُلِّۭ بَعۡدَ ذَٰلِكَ زَنِيمٍ

13. Coarse, and besides all that, base-born (of illegitimate birth).

14 : 68

أَن كَانَ ذَا مَالٖ وَبَنِينَ

14. Just because he has money and sons.

15 : 68

إِذَا تُتۡلَىٰ عَلَيۡهِ ءَايَٰتُنَا قَالَ أَسَٰطِيرُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ

15. When Our Verses (of The Qur'an) are recited to him, he says: "Legends of the ancients.”

16 : 68

سَنَسِمُهُۥ عَلَى ٱلۡخُرۡطُومِ

16. We will brand him upon the snout.
