1. Allāh has certainly heard 'and answered' the prayer of the woman¹ who was pleading with you 'Muhammad' about her husband², and was complaining to Allāh³. For Allāh was listening to your dialogue. Indeed, Allāh is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.
1. I.e., Khawlah, the daughter of Tha’labah. Allāh knows what you need before you ask him. So ask what you want, seek, and knock in prayer. Every petition we make draws us closer to the one who answers. We don’t have to be a stranger to Allāh in prayer. He knows us and wants to hear from us. We can take our concerns to Him right now. Allāh Will Answer. He says, call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen and answer to you.
2. Aws, the son of Samit.
3. After not having received a favorable response from you. As her husband made her unlawful to himself as of his mother, which was a famous type of divorce in Arabia. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) told her that he had not received any revelation in this regard. Then, this chapter was revealed by Allāh and abolished this ancient practice of pagandom.
2. Those who separate from their wives by likening them of their mothers⁴, they are not their mothers; their mothers are no other than those who gave birth to them. The words that they say are certainly detestable statement and falsehood. But Allāh is surely All-Pardoning, All-Forgiving.
4. By saying to one's wife: "You are to me like the back of my mother." Meaning unlawful to approach, which was abolished by the revelation of the next verses.
3. Those who separate from their wives by likening them to their mothers then (wish to) go back on what they have said, will have to set free a slave before they touch each other⁵. To that you are admonished. Allāh is certainly All-Aware of what you do.
4. If one cannot find (a slave to set free), he must fast for two months successively before they touch each other⁶. If one is not able (to fast), he must feed sixty destitute people. This is to affirm your faith in Allāh and His messenger. These are the limits set by Allāh. And for the deniers there is a painful torment.
5. Indeed, those who oppose Allāh and His messenger will be disgraced as those before them (who opposed their messengers) were disgraced. We have certainly sent down clear revelations. The unbelievers shall have a humiliating torment.
6. On the Day when Allāh will resurrect them all, then inform them of what they did (in the worldly life). Allāh has kept record of it, while they have forgotten it. For Allāh is a Witness over all things.
7. Have you not considered that Allāh knows all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth? No where is there a secret counsel between three but He is the fourth of them, nor (between) five but He is the sixth of them, nor less than that, nor more but He is with them wheresoever they may be⁷. Then on the Day of Resurrection, He will inform them of what they did (in their entire lives). Indeed, Allāh is the Knower of everything8.
7. by His Knowledge and Power.
8. Allāh knows everything. Allāh truly knows all and He knows where we are in relation to Him. He knows everything about us, is present everywhere by His knowledge and power. Because Allāh is All-Knowing, Ever-Present, and All-Powerful, He knows exactly where we’ve been, what we’ve been doing, and what we’re made of.
8. Have you not seen those who were forbidden from holding secret counsels (of conspiracy), then they return to what they were forbidden, conspiring in sin, hostility and disobedience to the messenger? When they come to you, they greet you with that (word) by which Allah does not greet you with, and say within themselves: "Why does not Allāh chastise us for what we say9?" Gehinnom (Hell) is enough for them; they will burn in it. What a terrible destination.
9. O believers, when you hold a secret counsel, let it not be for a sin, hostility, or to disobey the Messenger, but let it be for virtue and righteousness. And fear Allāh, to Whom you shall be 'all' gathered together.
10. Holding secret counsels (for evil purposes) is only (work) of Satan to cause grief to those who believe, but he can do no harm to them except by the will of Allāh. On Allāh (alone) let the believers place their complete trust.
11. O believers, when it is said to you: "Make room in (your) assemblies," then make ample room. Allāh will give you ample room (from His mercy)10. When you are told: "Rise up (for a good deed)," then rise up. Allāh will exalt by high degrees those of you who believe, and (above) all those who are given (right) knowledge (with sound faith and good deeds). For Allāh is All-Aware of what you do.
10. This verse is revealed regarding making a room to sit during the assembly so that those arriving to join the gathering may find place to sit, so Allāh will make room 'place' for you of His grace. But it has a more general meaning than this. It is that whoever gives abundantly to one who is suffering hardship, Allāh will give him abundantly of His grace. Whoever comforts a broken heart, Allāh will comfort his heart. Whoever relieves a pain from a believer, Allāh will relieve his pain. And whoever wipes away a tear, Allāh will wipe away his tear. No one is more generous or loyal than Almighty Allāh. Doing good to others protects one from evil calamities.
12. O believers, when you want to consult the Prophet in private, then give something in charity before your consultation. That is better for you and purer. But if you do not find anything (to offer as charity), then Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
13. Have you feared to give before your consultation charities? So when you do not, and Allāh has forgiven you, then keep up the prayer, pay the poor-rate, and obey Allāh and His messenger. For Allāh is All-Aware of what you do.
14. Have you not seen those (hypocrites) who befriend a people upon whom is the Wrath of Allāh11? They are neither of you nor of them, and they (the hypocrites) swear to lies12 while they know.
11. i.e., the unbelieving Jews.
12. that they are Muslims.
17. Neither their wealth nor their children will avail them anything against Allāh. They are the people of the Hellfire, therein they will abide forever.
18. On the Day when Allāh will resurrect them all 'from the dead for Judgment', then they will swear to Him as they swear (now) to you (believers), thinking that they are on something 'to stand on'. indeed, it is they who are the liars.
13. That their lies will be believed and that they will escape the punishment of God.
22. You will not find any people who believe in Allāh and the Last Day having affection for those who oppose Allāh 'God'14 and His messenger, even though they be their (own) fathers, sons, brothers, or kindred. It is they in whose hearts Allāh has inscribed faith, and strengthened them with a spirit15 from Him. He will admit them to Gardens under which rivers flow, abiding therein forever. Allāh is well-pleased with them and they are well-pleased with Him. They are the Party of Allāh. Indeed, the Party of Allāh - they are the successful.
14. Allāh has made a universe that reflects His existence and is built on His law, and a man is a fool to live against the law of God. For a man to live in war against his Creator is stupidity.
15. The holy spirit that empowers the believers by the will of Allāh with spiritual gifts and helps to walk on the path of righteousness. The divine guidance and influence over the believer to help and support him towards what is right and just. The holy spirit, is another name for angel Gabriel whose task is conveying revelation to prophets and helping the believers.
