Al-Muddaththir

آیت: 1

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلۡمُدَّثِّرُ

1. O you covered in your cloak¹.

1. I.e., Prophet Muhammad. Out of fear from what he has seen - the angel Gabriel for the first time.

آیت: 2

قُمۡ فَأَنذِرۡ

2. Arise and warn2,

2. The world from their unrighteousness. For Allāh so cared the world, that he send his beloved, last and final messenger, the Prophet Muhammad, that whoever believes in Allāh and His messenger Muhammad should not perish but have eternal life.

آیت: 3

وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرۡ

3. And proclaim the Greatness of 'Allāh' your Lord,

آیت: 4

وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرۡ

4. And purify 'yourself from the sins and' your garments 'from the impurities',

آیت: 5

وَٱلرُّجۡزَ فَٱهۡجُرۡ

5. And keep away from worshipping idols3,

3. And from bad conduct and morals.

آیت: 6

وَلَا تَمۡنُن تَسۡتَكۡثِرُ

6. Do not confer favor in order that you may receive more (in return)4,

4. Or do not consider your good deeds as a favor to Allāh. When we reach out to others to help, not because of what we might receive, but because of God’s Love, and so that we receive far greater blessing from Him only.

آیت: 7

وَلِرَبِّكَ فَٱصۡبِرۡ

7. Be patient for the Sake of 'Allāh' your Lord.

آیت: 8

فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِي ٱلنَّاقُورِ

8. For when the trumpet is blown5,

5. For the second time, causing all to rise from the dead for resurrection.

آیت: 9

فَذَٰلِكَ يَوۡمَئِذٖ يَوۡمٌ عَسِيرٌ

9. That Day, will be a difficult day,

آیت: 10

عَلَى ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ غَيۡرُ يَسِيرٖ

10. For the deniers, not easy.

آیت: 11

ذَرۡنِي وَمَنۡ خَلَقۡتُ وَحِيدٗا

11. Leave Me to deal with the one whom I created alone6,

6. i.e., having no wealth or children. This refers to al-Walīd bin al-Mughīrah, who was impressed by the Qur’an, yet he publicly denied it to win the approval of the pagans of Makkah.

آیت: 12

وَجَعَلۡتُ لَهُۥ مَالٗا مَّمۡدُودٗا

12. And gave him vast riches,

آیت: 13

وَبَنِينَ شُهُودٗا

13. And sons to be by his side (serving him),

آیت: 14

وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمۡهِيدٗا

14. And made life smooth and comfortable for him -

آیت: 15

ثُمَّ يَطۡمَعُ أَنۡ أَزِيدَ

15. Then he desires that I should give him more7!

7. Despite his denial of Me.

آیت: 16

كَلَّآۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لِأٓيَٰتِنَا عَنِيدٗا

16. No! (It shall never be), since He has been opposing Our Verses8.

8. The Qur’an that I revealed to My messenger, the Prophet Muhammad, denying them.

آیت: 17

سَأُرۡهِقُهُۥ صَعُودًا

17. I will cover him with an arduous torment. 

آیت: 18

إِنَّهُۥ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ

18. He pondered and plotted (against the Qur’an)9.

9. In order to refute it.

آیت: 19

فَقُتِلَ كَيۡفَ قَدَّرَ

19. So may he perish, how he plotted.

آیت: 20

ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيۡفَ قَدَّرَ

20. Again, may he perish - how he plotted!

آیت: 21

ثُمَّ نَظَرَ

21. Then he looked around 'in frustration',

آیت: 22

ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ

22. Then frowned and scowled,

آیت: 23

ثُمَّ أَدۡبَرَ وَٱسۡتَكۡبَرَ

23.Then he turned back and was haughty10,

10. Turning away from following God's Messenger, the Prophet Muhammad.

آیت: 24

فَقَالَ إِنۡ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحۡرٞ يُؤۡثَرُ

24. And said: "This (Qur’an) is only magic imitated (from others).

آیت: 25

إِنۡ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا قَوۡلُ ٱلۡبَشَرِ

25. This is only the word of a human being."

آیت: 26

سَأُصۡلِيهِ سَقَرَ

26. Soon I will burn him in the Scorching Fire.

آیت: 27

وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا سَقَرُ

27. What will make you realise what the Scorching Fire is?

آیت: 28

لَا تُبۡقِي وَلَا تَذَرُ

28. It leaves nothing nor does it spare anything,

آیت: 29

لَوَّاحَةٞ لِّلۡبَشَرِ

29. Burning the skins,

آیت: 30

عَلَيۡهَا تِسۡعَةَ عَشَرَ

30. Over it are nineteen11.

11. Angels as keepers and guardians of Hell.

آیت: 31

وَمَا جَعَلۡنَآ أَصۡحَٰبَ ٱلنَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَٰٓئِكَةٗۖ وَمَا جَعَلۡنَا عِدَّتَهُمۡ إِلَّا فِتۡنَةٗ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ لِيَسۡتَيۡقِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ وَيَزۡدَادَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْ إِيمَٰنٗا وَلَا يَرۡتَابَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ وَلِيَقُولَ ٱلَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٞ وَٱلۡكَٰفِرُونَ مَاذَآ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَٰذَا مَثَلٗاۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَن يَشَآءُ وَيَهۡدِي مَن يَشَآءُۚ وَمَا يَعۡلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَۚ وَمَا هِيَ إِلَّا ذِكۡرَىٰ لِلۡبَشَرِ

31. We have appointed only angels to be the wardens of the Fire, and We have specified their number only as a trial for the pagans and that those (Jews and Nazarenes) who have been given the Scripture may be certain and the believers may increase in Faith, and those who have been given the Scripture and the believers may not be in doubt, and so that those in whose hearts is a sickness (of hypocrisy) and the pagans may say: "What does Allāh mean by this example?" Thus does Allāh 'justly' leave astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. No one knows the hosts of 'Allāh' your Lord except Him. This is only a Reminder to mankind.

آیت: 32

كَلَّا وَٱلۡقَمَرِ

32. No, By the moon,

آیت: 33

وَٱلَّيۡلِ إِذۡ أَدۡبَرَ

33. And the night when it departs,

آیت: 34

وَٱلصُّبۡحِ إِذَآ أَسۡفَرَ

34. And the morning when it brightens;

آیت: 35

إِنَّهَا لَإِحۡدَى ٱلۡكُبَرِ

35. That the Hellfire is one of the gravest afflictions,

آیت: 36

نَذِيرٗا لِّلۡبَشَرِ

36. A warning to mankind,

آیت: 37

لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمۡ أَن يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوۡ يَتَأَخَّرَ

37. To whomever among you wills to go forward (by faith and good deeds) or lag behind (by disbelief and sins).

آیت: 38

كُلُّ نَفۡسِۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتۡ رَهِينَةٌ

38. Every soul is held responsible for what it earns (of evil),

آیت: 39

إِلَّآ أَصۡحَٰبَ ٱلۡيَمِينِ

39. Except the people of the right,

آیت: 40

فِي جَنَّٰتٖ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ

40. (Who will be) in gardens - asking one another,

آیت: 41

عَنِ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِينَ

41. About the wicked:

آیت: 42

مَا سَلَكَكُمۡ فِي سَقَرَ

42. What has brought you into Hell?

آیت: 43

قَالُواْ لَمۡ نَكُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُصَلِّينَ

43. They will say: We were not of those who prayed;

آیت: 44

وَلَمۡ نَكُ نُطۡعِمُ ٱلۡمِسۡكِينَ

44. Nor did we feed the poor,

آیت: 45

وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ ٱلۡخَآئِضِينَ

45. We used to indulge in falsehood with those who indulged in it.

آیت: 46

وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوۡمِ ٱلدِّينِ

46. And we used to deny the Day of (Judgment and) Recompense,

آیت: 47

حَتَّىٰٓ أَتَىٰنَا ٱلۡيَقِينُ

47. Until there came to us the certainty (of death).

آیت: 48

فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمۡ شَفَٰعَةُ ٱلشَّٰفِعِينَ

48. So the intercession of intercessors will not benefit them.

آیت: 49

فَمَا لَهُمۡ عَنِ ٱلتَّذۡكِرَةِ مُعۡرِضِينَ

49. What is the matter with them, that they turn away from the Reminder (this Qur’an).

آیت: 50

كَأَنَّهُمۡ حُمُرٞ مُّسۡتَنفِرَةٞ

50. Like frightened (wild) donkeys.

آیت: 51

فَرَّتۡ مِن قَسۡوَرَةِۭ

51. Fleeing from a lion12?

12. If you refuse good advice, you are asking for trouble; follow it and you are safe. The teachings of the Qur’an and Sunnah are a fountain of life. Be good and trusted, as those who can't be trusted are on the road to ruin. Bad people are destroyed by their rejection of faith. But whoever obeys Allāh and His messenger Muhammad will have security, and will be safe, with no reason to be afraid. If you obey the majority of those who live on earth, they will lead you away from God's path. They only follow idle fancies, indulging in conjecture.

آیت: 52

بَلۡ يُرِيدُ كُلُّ ٱمۡرِيٕٖ مِّنۡهُمۡ أَن يُؤۡتَىٰ صُحُفٗا مُّنَشَّرَةٗ

52. Rather, every one of them wants that he may be given 'Divine' scrolls spread out.

آیت: 53

كَلَّاۖ بَل لَّا يَخَافُونَ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةَ

53. No, But they do not fear the Hereafter.

آیت: 54

كَلَّآ إِنَّهُۥ تَذۡكِرَةٞ

54. No, it (this Qur’an) is indeed a Reminder.

آیت: 55

فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ

55. So whoever wills may take heed.

آیت: 56

وَمَا يَذۡكُرُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُۚ هُوَ أَهۡلُ ٱلتَّقۡوَىٰ وَأَهۡلُ ٱلۡمَغۡفِرَةِ

56. But they will not take heed unless Allāh so wills. He is 'the One' worthy to be feared, and worthy to forgive.
