At-Takwīr

1 : 81

إِذَا ٱلشَّمۡسُ كُوِّرَتۡ

1. When the sun is folded up (and darkened) ^[1],

[1]. The Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "The sun and the moon will be folded up (or joined together and deprived of their lights) on the Day of Resurrection.

2 : 81

وَإِذَا ٱلنُّجُومُ ٱنكَدَرَتۡ

2. And when the stars fall, dispersing,

3 : 81

وَإِذَا ٱلۡجِبَالُ سُيِّرَتۡ

3. And when the mountains are made to move,

4 : 81

وَإِذَا ٱلۡعِشَارُ عُطِّلَتۡ

4. And when pregnant camels (nearing delivery) ^[2] are left untended,

[2]. I.e., the most valued of one’s possessions.

5 : 81

وَإِذَا ٱلۡوُحُوشُ حُشِرَتۡ

5. And when the wild beasts are gathered ^[3],

[3]. With human beings on one plain ground,

6 : 81

وَإِذَا ٱلۡبِحَارُ سُجِّرَتۡ

6. and when the seas are set aflame ^[4],,

[4]. Or overflow into each other.

7 : 81

وَإِذَا ٱلنُّفُوسُ زُوِّجَتۡ

7. And when the souls are paired ^[5],

[5]. I.e., joined like with like, or are reunited with their bodies.

8 : 81

وَإِذَا ٱلۡمَوۡءُۥدَةُ سُئِلَتۡ

8. And when the baby girl buried alive ^[6] is asked,

[6]. Right after birth by the pagans during the pre-islamic age of ignorance.

9 : 81

بِأَيِّ ذَنۢبٖ قُتِلَتۡ

9. For what offence she was killed,

10 : 81

وَإِذَا ٱلصُّحُفُ نُشِرَتۡ

10. And when the pages (record of deeds) are spread open;

11 : 81

وَإِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ كُشِطَتۡ

11. And when the sky is stripped away,

12 : 81

وَإِذَا ٱلۡجَحِيمُ سُعِّرَتۡ

12. And when Hell is set ablaze,

13 : 81

وَإِذَا ٱلۡجَنَّةُ أُزۡلِفَتۡ

13. And when Paradise is brought near (to the righteous),

14 : 81

عَلِمَتۡ نَفۡسٞ مَّآ أَحۡضَرَتۡ

14. Each soul will (then) know what it has brought with it,

15 : 81

فَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِٱلۡخُنَّسِ

15. So I swear by the receding stars,

16 : 81

ٱلۡجَوَارِ ٱلۡكُنَّسِ

16. That run their courses (and) disappear,

17 : 81

وَٱلَّيۡلِ إِذَا عَسۡعَسَ

17. And by the night as it departs,

18 : 81

وَٱلصُّبۡحِ إِذَا تَنَفَّسَ

18. And (by) the morning as it breathes,

19 : 81

إِنَّهُۥ لَقَوۡلُ رَسُولٖ كَرِيمٖ

19. It (the Qur’an) is surely the Word (of God delivered by) a gracious Messenger (Gabriel),

20 : 81

ذِي قُوَّةٍ عِندَ ذِي ٱلۡعَرۡشِ مَكِينٖ

20. Endowed with power, and is held in honour by the Lord of the Throne (Allāh) –

21 : 81

مُّطَاعٖ ثَمَّ أَمِينٖ

21. Obeyed there (in heaven) and trustworthy.

22 : 81

وَمَا صَاحِبُكُم بِمَجۡنُونٖ

22. And (O people) your companion (prophet Muhammad) is not insane ^[7].

[7]. As claimed by the pagans.

23 : 81

وَلَقَدۡ رَءَاهُ بِٱلۡأُفُقِ ٱلۡمُبِينِ

23. And indeed he saw him (Gabriel) on the clear horizon.

24 : 81

وَمَا هُوَ عَلَى ٱلۡغَيۡبِ بِضَنِينٖ

24. And he does not withhold (what is revealed to him of) the unseen.

25 : 81

وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوۡلِ شَيۡطَٰنٖ رَّجِيمٖ

25. Nor is it (this Qur’an) the word of an outcast devil;

26 : 81

فَأَيۡنَ تَذۡهَبُونَ

26. So where are you (O pagans) going ^[8]?

[8]. In your denial of the Qur'an and turning away from it.

27 : 81

إِنۡ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكۡرٞ لِّلۡعَٰلَمِينَ

27. It (the Qur’an) is only a Reminder to the worlds (mankind and Jinn),

28 : 81

لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمۡ أَن يَسۡتَقِيمَ

28. For him among you who wills to take a straight course.

29 : 81

وَمَا تَشَآءُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ

29. And you cannot will, unless Allāh, the Lord of the worlds, so wills.
