وَإِذۡ قَالَتۡ أُمَّةٞ مِّنۡهُمۡ لِمَ تَعِظُونَ قَوۡمًا ٱللَّهُ مُهۡلِكُهُمۡ أَوۡ مُعَذِّبُهُمۡ عَذَابٗا شَدِيدٗاۖ قَالُواْ مَعۡذِرَةً إِلَىٰ رَبِّكُمۡ وَلَعَلَّهُمۡ يَتَّقُونَ
164. When a community among them said, “Why do you preach to a people whom Allāh is about to destroy or punish with severe chastisement?” they replied, “[So that we may have] an excuse before your Lord and that they may guard themselves against evil.”
[36]. While we can’t force others to turn from sinful behaviors, we can compassionately confront them. We can “speak the truth in love” so that we both become followers of Prophet Muhammad's perfect example ”.

:
7
فَلَمَّا نَسُواْ مَا ذُكِّرُواْ بِهِۦٓ أَنجَيۡنَا ٱلَّذِينَ يَنۡهَوۡنَ عَنِ ٱلسُّوٓءِ وَأَخَذۡنَا ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُواْ بِعَذَابِۭ بَـِٔيسِۭ بِمَا كَانُواْ يَفۡسُقُونَ
165. When they [ignored and] forget the reminders given to them, We delivered those who forbade evil and seized those who committed iniquity with a miserable punishment, for their defiant disobedience.

:
7
فَلَمَّا عَتَوۡاْ عَن مَّا نُهُواْ عَنۡهُ قُلۡنَا لَهُمۡ كُونُواْ قِرَدَةً خَٰسِـِٔينَ
166. When they stubbornly persisted in what they were forbidden, We said to them, “Be apes, despised and rejected."

:
7
وَإِذۡ تَأَذَّنَ رَبُّكَ لَيَبۡعَثَنَّ عَلَيۡهِمۡ إِلَىٰ يَوۡمِ ٱلۡقِيَٰمَةِ مَن يَسُومُهُمۡ سُوٓءَ ٱلۡعَذَابِۗ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَسَرِيعُ ٱلۡعِقَابِ وَإِنَّهُۥ لَغَفُورٞ رَّحِيمٞ
167. And [remember] when your Lord declared that He would surely send upon them [the disbelieving Jews] those who would afflict them with the severest punishment until the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, your Lord is swift in punishment, yet truly All-Forgiving and Most Merciful

:
7
وَقَطَّعۡنَٰهُمۡ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ أُمَمٗاۖ مِّنۡهُمُ ٱلصَّٰلِحُونَ وَمِنۡهُمۡ دُونَ ذَٰلِكَۖ وَبَلَوۡنَٰهُم بِٱلۡحَسَنَٰتِ وَٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ لَعَلَّهُمۡ يَرۡجِعُونَ
168. We divided them on the earth into communities, some of them are righteous and others are less so. And We tested them with good and bad so that they might return [to Us].

فَخَلَفَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِمۡ خَلۡفٞ وَرِثُواْ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ يَأۡخُذُونَ عَرَضَ هَٰذَا ٱلۡأَدۡنَىٰ وَيَقُولُونَ سَيُغۡفَرُ لَنَا وَإِن يَأۡتِهِمۡ عَرَضٞ مِّثۡلُهُۥ يَأۡخُذُوهُۚ أَلَمۡ يُؤۡخَذۡ عَلَيۡهِم مِّيثَٰقُ ٱلۡكِتَٰبِ أَن لَّا يَقُولُواْ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ إِلَّا ٱلۡحَقَّ وَدَرَسُواْ مَا فِيهِۗ وَٱلدَّارُ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةُ خَيۡرٞ لِّلَّذِينَ يَتَّقُونَۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ
169. Then came after them another succession who inherited the Scripture, seeking the pleasures of this lowly life [37], saying, “It will be forgiven us.” Yet if a similar temptation comes to them, they will fall for it again. Was not a covenant taken from them in the Scripture that they would speak only the truth about Allāh, though they have studied its contents? The abode of the Hereafter is far better for those who guard against evil. Do you not then understand?
[37]. I.e., unlawful gains and pleasures.

:
7
وَٱلَّذِينَ يُمَسِّكُونَ بِٱلۡكِتَٰبِ وَأَقَامُواْ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ إِنَّا لَا نُضِيعُ أَجۡرَ ٱلۡمُصۡلِحِينَ
170. But those who hold fast [38] to the Scripture and establish the prayer, surely We will never let the reward of the righteous go to waste.
[38]. I.e., take and adhere.
