1. The Qur’an is made up of such letters from the Arabic alphabet. The Arabs at the time of Revelation were the unrivaled masters of the Arabic language and yet when challenged were totally unable to bring anything like the Qur’an. Despite this fact, the inimitable nature of the Qur’an and its divine source, God knows best the meaning of these disjointed Arabic letters.
2. The clear Book is the Qur’an whose verses are clear with regards to its language and rulings, and all its meanings. A Book whose Truth is evident and which clears up that which is indefinite and inexact.
49. (Pharaoh) said: "You believe in Moses before I give you permission; he is certainly the chief of you who taught you the magic, so you shall soon come to know: I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will crucify you all."
3. These are the words of the prophet Abraham, being conscious of his own impotency to cure himself; and being fully satisfied of the power of Allah to cure and heal him. Sins are also diseases, and healing them lies in the forgiveness of them, which Allah can only grant.
the famous story of the boy and the king recorded in the Sunnah, when the king’s courtier asks the boy to cure his blindness, the boy retorts: “Verily, I cure no one. Only Allāh (Exalted is He) cures. If you believe in Allāh (Exalted is He), I will supplicate to Allāh and He will cure you.”
Hence, while the supplication was a means of curing the blindness, the real doer was Allāh alone. By making this known to the courtier, the boy instilled in him the reality of Monotheism. However, this does not mean the action (in this case, healing) cannot be ascribed to the means (in this case, the boy or his supplication). It is correct to make this ascription, as long as the belief that the effort is not the real cause is firmly understood. Jesus also cured the blind and the leprosy and raised from the dead all by Allah's permission and not from Himself. Jesus is nothing without the help of his God and Lord, Allah.
81. He (Allah) will cause me to die4, and will bring me back to life;
4 . The prophet Muhammad said, “One who accompanies the funeral of a Muslim with faith and hope of earning reward, and remains with it until the burial is complete, shall return (home) with two qirat (great) rewards. Each reward is equal to Mount Uhud, and the person who performs the funeral prayer only, and returns before the burial, will return with one qirat (great) reward”.
89. Except him who comes to Allah with a sound heart5.
5. Free from pride, haughtiness and hypocrisy. Our hearts can shape our lives and relationships. A corrupt heart brings trouble and suffering, while a cheerful heart is good medicine. We are warned against the damage caused by being spiteful, seeking revenge, vindictive or willfully stubborn, quarreling, lying, stealing and unjust behavior. Contrarily, loyal and protective relationships are lifted up.
165. Do you come (lustfully) to the males8 unlike all other creatures.
8. The Prophet Muhammad said: "If a woman has carnal relations with a woman (lesbian), they are both adulterers. If a man has carnal relations with a man (gay), then they are both adulterers."
The Prophet Muhammad also said: "Cursed is the one who has intercourse with an animal, cursed is the one who does the action of sodomy." He repeated three times.
197. Is it not a Sign for them (the pagans) that the learned men of the children of Israel knew about it12?
12. E.g., Abdullah ibn Salām, a Jewish scholar, who accepted Islam during the lifetime of the Prophet (ﷺ), for he knew that he came with a true message.
223. They (the devils) try to listen14, and most of them are liars15.
14. I.e., overhear to what the angels on high may say of the revealed unseen and whisper it to their sinful human agents. This was before they were prevented, as described in Q72:8-9.
15. I.e., the soothsayers and fortune tellers.
224. As for the poets, only the erring people follow them16.
16. Islam encourages good wholesome poetry, which inspires one towards the fear of God, towards His awe and obedience, and towards anything that is good and made permissible by God and His messenger. What is forbidden is poetry that does nothing but instigates and encourages indecency, illegal lusts and desires, and inspires one towards the transgression of the boundaries of Islam.
Allah's Messenger said, "It is better for anyone of you that the inside of his body be filled with pus which may consume his body, than it be filled with poetry."
The Messenger of Allah did not like poets and poetry, which sensationalized and encouraged the pursuit of the world and its alluring lusts. But he encouraged those poets whose poetry praised God, contained words of wisdom which related to the Guidance to God.
227. Except those (poets) who believe and do righteous deeds, remember Allah much, and defend themselves after being wronged. The unjust18 will soon know how terrible their end will be.
