Translation of the meanings Surah: An-Nāzi‘āt   Ayah:

An-Nāzi‘āt

وَٱلنَّٰزِعَٰتِ غَرۡقٗا
1. 'I swear' by those (angels) who pull out (evil souls)1 harshly (upon death),
1. Of the deniers.
Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:
وَٱلنَّٰشِطَٰتِ نَشۡطٗا
2. And by those 'angels' who gently draw out the souls (of the believers),
Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:
وَٱلسَّٰبِحَٰتِ سَبۡحٗا
3. And by the 'stars and planets' that glide around in space swiftly2,
2. With Allah’s command.
Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:
فَٱلسَّٰبِقَٰتِ سَبۡقٗا
4. And by those 'angels' who race each other in a race3,
3. Racing to deliver the souls of the believers to Paradise.

فَٱلۡمُدَبِّرَٰتِ أَمۡرٗا
5. And by those 'angels' who arrange each and every matter4,
4. That you will be resurrected.

يَوۡمَ تَرۡجُفُ ٱلرَّاجِفَةُ
6. On the Day the blast [of the Trumpet] will convulse [the world],

تَتۡبَعُهَا ٱلرَّادِفَةُ
7. And will be followed by the second blast5.
5. Blowing of the Trumpet for Resurrection.
Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:
قُلُوبٞ يَوۡمَئِذٖ وَاجِفَةٌ
8. 'Some' hearts6 on that Day will pound,
6. Of those who denied the Resurrection and Judgment.

أَبۡصَٰرُهَا خَٰشِعَةٞ
9. Their eyes downcast 'out of fear'.
Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:
يَقُولُونَ أَءِنَّا لَمَرۡدُودُونَ فِي ٱلۡحَافِرَةِ
10. (But now) they say (mockingly): "Shall we indeed be returned (after death) to 'our' former state 'of life'?

أَءِذَا كُنَّا عِظَٰمٗا نَّخِرَةٗ
11. Even after we are decayed bones?"
Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:
قَالُواْ تِلۡكَ إِذٗا كَرَّةٌ خَاسِرَةٞ
12. They say: "That then would be a return with a 'total' loss."
Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:
فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ زَجۡرَةٞ وَٰحِدَةٞ
13. But it7 will be only a single blast,
7. The second Blowing of the Trumpet.

فَإِذَا هُم بِٱلسَّاهِرَةِ
14. and at once they will be 'on the surface of the earth' alive 'after their death'.

هَلۡ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ مُوسَىٰٓ
15. Has there reached you (O
Muhammad) the story of Moses?
Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:
إِذۡ نَادَىٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ بِٱلۡوَادِ ٱلۡمُقَدَّسِ طُوًى
16. When his Lord 'Allāh' called to him in the Sacred valley of Tuwa,

ٱذۡهَبۡ إِلَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنَ إِنَّهُۥ طَغَىٰ
17. Saying': "Go to Pharaoh, for he has transgressed (all bounds)."

فَقُلۡ هَل لَّكَ إِلَىٰٓ أَن تَزَكَّىٰ
18. And say to him: "Would you (be willing to) purify yourself from (idolatry and sins)?

وَأَهۡدِيَكَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَتَخۡشَىٰ
19. And will guide you to (Allāh) your Lord so you would be in awe 'of Him'.

فَأَرَىٰهُ ٱلۡأٓيَةَ ٱلۡكُبۡرَىٰ
20. So he (Moses) showed him the great Sign8.
8. I.e., his staff becoming a manifest snake.

فَكَذَّبَ وَعَصَىٰ
21. But he 'i.e., Pharaoh' denied and disobeyed 'Allāh'.

ثُمَّ أَدۡبَرَ يَسۡعَىٰ
22. Then he turned his back, striving.
Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:
فَحَشَرَ فَنَادَىٰ
23. And gathered 'his people' and called out,
Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:
فَقَالَ أَنَا۠ رَبُّكُمُ ٱلۡأَعۡلَىٰ
24. Saying: "I am your lord, the most high."
Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:
فَأَخَذَهُ ٱللَّهُ نَكَالَ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ وَٱلۡأُولَىٰٓ
25. So Allāh seized him (in exemplary Punishment)9 for the last and the first10.
9. By drowning him in the sea, and in the Hereafter by subjecting him to the most severe punishment.
10. Transgression i.e., for Pharaoh's setting himself as a deity and for his previous oppression of the people and denial of Moses's Message.

إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَعِبۡرَةٗ لِّمَن يَخۡشَىٰٓ
26. There is certainly a lesson in this for whosoever stands in awe (of Allāh)!

ءَأَنتُمۡ أَشَدُّ خَلۡقًا أَمِ ٱلسَّمَآءُۚ بَنَىٰهَا
27. Are you harder to create, or the heaven, He (Allāh) constructed it.
Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:
رَفَعَ سَمۡكَهَا فَسَوَّىٰهَا
28. He raised its ceiling high, and proportioned it,
Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:
وَأَغۡطَشَ لَيۡلَهَا وَأَخۡرَجَ ضُحَىٰهَا
29. He darkened its night and brought out its daylight.
Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:
وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ بَعۡدَ ذَٰلِكَ دَحَىٰهَآ
30. And the earth after that, He spread out.
Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:
أَخۡرَجَ مِنۡهَا مَآءَهَا وَمَرۡعَىٰهَا
31. He brought forth from it its water and its pasture.
Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:
وَٱلۡجِبَالَ أَرۡسَىٰهَا
32. And the mountains He set firmly,
Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:
مَتَٰعٗا لَّكُمۡ وَلِأَنۡعَٰمِكُمۡ
33. A provision for you and for your cattle.
Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:
فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلطَّآمَّةُ ٱلۡكُبۡرَىٰ
34. But when the great Overwhelming Calamity comes to pass11 -
11. The second blowing of the trumpet, causing all to rise from the dead for resurrection and judgement.

يَوۡمَ يَتَذَكَّرُ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ مَا سَعَىٰ
35. On that Day everyone will remember 'all' what he strove for 'good or bad',
Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:
وَبُرِّزَتِ ٱلۡجَحِيمُ لِمَن يَرَىٰ
36. And the Hellfire will be displayed 'for all' those who would see it,

فَأَمَّا مَن طَغَىٰ
37. As for him who has transgressed,
Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:
وَءَاثَرَ ٱلۡحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنۡيَا
38. And preferred the worldly life,
Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:
فَإِنَّ ٱلۡجَحِيمَ هِيَ ٱلۡمَأۡوَىٰ
39. Hell - will surely be his Home.
Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:
وَأَمَّا مَنۡ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِۦ وَنَهَى ٱلنَّفۡسَ عَنِ ٱلۡهَوَىٰ
40. But as for him who is in awe (being ever conscious of the) standing in the Presence of His Lord (Allāh, for reckoning), and restrains his soul from lowly desires,
Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:
فَإِنَّ ٱلۡجَنَّةَ هِيَ ٱلۡمَأۡوَىٰ
41. Paradise - will surely be his Home.
Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:
يَسۡـَٔلُونَكَ عَنِ ٱلسَّاعَةِ أَيَّانَ مُرۡسَىٰهَا
42. They ask you (O Muhammad), about the the Hour (of Doom), when will it be?
Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:
فِيمَ أَنتَ مِن ذِكۡرَىٰهَآ
43. How could you possibly mention it12?
12. Meaning that he (ﷺ) had no knowledge of it, though he is one of its Signs.
Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:
إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ مُنتَهَىٰهَآ
44. To your Lord 'Allāh alone' is its ultimate Knowledge.
Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:
إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مُنذِرُ مَن يَخۡشَىٰهَا
45. You are only a warner to him who is in awe of it.
Arabic explanations of the Qur’an:
كَأَنَّهُمۡ يَوۡمَ يَرَوۡنَهَا لَمۡ يَلۡبَثُوٓاْ إِلَّا عَشِيَّةً أَوۡ ضُحَىٰهَا
46. On the Day when they see it, it will seem to them as though they had not stayed 'in this world' except for an evening or a morning thereof.
