Maryam

1 : 19

كٓهيعٓصٓ

1. Kāf Hā Yā ʿAin Ṣād ^[1].

2 : 19

ذِكۡرُ رَحۡمَتِ رَبِّكَ عَبۡدَهُۥ زَكَرِيَّآ

2. [This is] a reminder of how your Lord showed mercy to His servant, Zachariah.

3 : 19

إِذۡ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُۥ نِدَآءً خَفِيّٗا

3. When he called upon his Lord with a secret [and sincere] call.

4 : 19

قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّي وَهَنَ ٱلۡعَظۡمُ مِنِّي وَٱشۡتَعَلَ ٱلرَّأۡسُ شَيۡبٗا وَلَمۡ أَكُنۢ بِدُعَآئِكَ رَبِّ شَقِيّٗا

4. He said, “My Lord, my bones have grown weak, and my head has flared with white hair; yet never, my Lord, have I been disappointed in my prayers to You.”

5 : 19

وَإِنِّي خِفۡتُ ٱلۡمَوَٰلِيَ مِن وَرَآءِي وَكَانَتِ ٱمۡرَأَتِي عَاقِرٗا فَهَبۡ لِي مِن لَّدُنكَ وَلِيّٗا

5. And indeed, I fear [what] my kinsmen [may do] after me, and my wife ^[2] is barren; so grant me, from Your own grace, an heir.

[2]. i.e., Elizabeth

6 : 19

يَرِثُنِي وَيَرِثُ مِنۡ ءَالِ يَعۡقُوبَۖ وَٱجۡعَلۡهُ رَبِّ رَضِيّٗا

6. [Who] will inherit from me and inherit from the family of Jacob ^[3]. And make him, my Lord, pleasing [to You].

[3]. That is, he will inherit from me and from the family of Jacob the legacy of religious knowledge and prophethood. The inheritance referred to here is not material wealth, for the prophets do not leave behind worldly riches to be inherited. Rather, as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“We, the Prophets, do not leave behind inheritance in the form of wealth; what we leave behind is charity.”
Thus, Zakariyyā’s plea was for a righteous heir to continue the mission of Islamic faith, knowledge, and guidance — a successor who would preserve the divine message and serve Allāh in a way that is pleasing to Him.

7 : 19

يَٰزَكَرِيَّآ إِنَّا نُبَشِّرُكَ بِغُلَٰمٍ ٱسۡمُهُۥ يَحۡيَىٰ لَمۡ نَجۡعَل لَّهُۥ مِن قَبۡلُ سَمِيّٗا

7. "O Zakariyyā, We give you glad tidings of a son whose name will be Yaḥyā [John]; never before have We given this name to anyone.”

8 : 19

قَالَ رَبِّ أَنَّىٰ يَكُونُ لِي غُلَٰمٞ وَكَانَتِ ٱمۡرَأَتِي عَاقِرٗا وَقَدۡ بَلَغۡتُ مِنَ ٱلۡكِبَرِ عِتِيّٗا

8. He said, “My Lord, how can I have a son when my wife is barren, and I have become frail in old age?”

9 : 19

قَالَ كَذَٰلِكَ قَالَ رَبُّكَ هُوَ عَلَيَّ هَيِّنٞ وَقَدۡ خَلَقۡتُكَ مِن قَبۡلُ وَلَمۡ تَكُ شَيۡـٔٗا

9. [The angel] said, “So [it will be]. Your Lord says: ‘That is easy for Me, for I created you before, when you were nothing."

10 : 19

قَالَ رَبِّ ٱجۡعَل لِّيٓ ءَايَةٗۖ قَالَ ءَايَتُكَ أَلَّا تُكَلِّمَ ٱلنَّاسَ ثَلَٰثَ لَيَالٖ سَوِيّٗا

10. [Zachariah] said, “My Lord, grant me a sign.” He said, “Your sign is that you will not be able to speak to people for three nights, though you are perfectly sound.”

11 : 19

فَخَرَجَ عَلَىٰ قَوۡمِهِۦ مِنَ ٱلۡمِحۡرَابِ فَأَوۡحَىٰٓ إِلَيۡهِمۡ أَن سَبِّحُواْ بُكۡرَةٗ وَعَشِيّٗا

11. So he came out before his people from the sanctuary and signaled to them, “Glorify and praise Allāh morning and evening.”
