166 : 3

وَمَآ أَصَٰبَكُمۡ يَوۡمَ ٱلۡتَقَى ٱلۡجَمۡعَانِ فَبِإِذۡنِ ٱللَّهِ وَلِيَعۡلَمَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ

166. Whatever befell you on the day the two armies met [at Uhud] was by Allah’s Permission, and so that He might make evident the [true] believers.

167 : 3

وَلِيَعۡلَمَ ٱلَّذِينَ نَافَقُواْۚ وَقِيلَ لَهُمۡ تَعَالَوۡاْ قَٰتِلُواْ فِي سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ أَوِ ٱدۡفَعُواْۖ قَالُواْ لَوۡ نَعۡلَمُ قِتَالٗا لَّٱتَّبَعۡنَٰكُمۡۗ هُمۡ لِلۡكُفۡرِ يَوۡمَئِذٍ أَقۡرَبُ مِنۡهُمۡ لِلۡإِيمَٰنِۚ يَقُولُونَ بِأَفۡوَٰهِهِم مَّا لَيۡسَ فِي قُلُوبِهِمۡۚ وَٱللَّهُ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا يَكۡتُمُونَ

167. And so that He might make evident those who were hypocrites. When it was said to them: "Come, fight in Allah’s Way, or [at least] defend yourselves." They said: "If we had known [there would be] fighting we would certainly have followed you." On that day they were closer to disbelief than to Faith. They say with their mouths what is not in their hearts - but Allāh knows best what they conceal.

168 : 3

ٱلَّذِينَ قَالُواْ لِإِخۡوَٰنِهِمۡ وَقَعَدُواْ لَوۡ أَطَاعُونَا مَا قُتِلُواْۗ قُلۡ فَٱدۡرَءُواْ عَنۡ أَنفُسِكُمُ ٱلۡمَوۡتَ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَٰدِقِينَ

168. Those who said about their [slain] brothers, while they themselves sat [at home]: "Had they obeyed us, they would not have been killed." Say: "Then avert death from yourselves, if you are truthful."

169 : 3

وَلَا تَحۡسَبَنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ قُتِلُواْ فِي سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ أَمۡوَٰتَۢاۚ بَلۡ أَحۡيَآءٌ عِندَ رَبِّهِمۡ يُرۡزَقُونَ

169. Do not think of those who are killed in the Cause of Allāh as dead. Rather, they are alive, provided [good provision] by their Lord ^[60];

[60]. Allāh declares that although the martyrs are killed in this world, their souls remain alive, receiving provisions in the everlasting abode. The Companions asked the Prophet ﷺ about the verse:
“Do not think of those who are killed in the way of Allāh as dead. Rather, they are alive and provided sustenance by their Lord.”
He ﷺ explained: “Their souls reside inside green birds that roam freely in Paradise. These birds dwell in lanterns hanging beneath the Throne of Allāh. They wander wherever they wish in Paradise, then return to these lanterns. Allāh looks upon them and asks, ‘Do you desire anything?’ They reply, ‘O Lord, what more could we desire when we are free to roam wherever we wish in Paradise?’ He asks them this three times. When they realize that He will continue to ask until they respond, they say, ‘O Lord, we wish that our souls be returned to our bodies so that we may be slain again in Your cause.’ Allāh knows that they have no other wish, so they remain as they are.”
The Prophet ﷺ also said: “No one who enters Paradise would wish to return to the world, even if he were to possess all that is in it—except for the martyr. He will long to return and be killed again ten times over, because of the immense honor and reward he sees.”

170 : 3

فَرِحِينَ بِمَآ ءَاتَىٰهُمُ ٱللَّهُ مِن فَضۡلِهِۦ وَيَسۡتَبۡشِرُونَ بِٱلَّذِينَ لَمۡ يَلۡحَقُواْ بِهِم مِّنۡ خَلۡفِهِمۡ أَلَّا خَوۡفٌ عَلَيۡهِمۡ وَلَا هُمۡ يَحۡزَنُونَ

170. Rejoicing in what Allāh has granted them of His bounty, and they are glad for those [to be martyred], who have not yet joined them from behind - that they will have no fear, nor will they grieve.

171 : 3

۞ يَسۡتَبۡشِرُونَ بِنِعۡمَةٖ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَفَضۡلٖ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يُضِيعُ أَجۡرَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ

171. They rejoice in the Favor of Allāh and His bounty, and [in the fact] that Allāh does not let the reward of the believers go to waste.

172 : 3

ٱلَّذِينَ ٱسۡتَجَابُواْ لِلَّهِ وَٱلرَّسُولِ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَآ أَصَابَهُمُ ٱلۡقَرۡحُۚ لِلَّذِينَ أَحۡسَنُواْ مِنۡهُمۡ وَٱتَّقَوۡاْ أَجۡرٌ عَظِيمٌ

172. Those who responded to Allāh and the Messenger after the injury had struck them ^[61], for those who did good among them and guarded themselves [against evil] is a great reward.

173 : 3

ٱلَّذِينَ قَالَ لَهُمُ ٱلنَّاسُ إِنَّ ٱلنَّاسَ قَدۡ جَمَعُواْ لَكُمۡ فَٱخۡشَوۡهُمۡ فَزَادَهُمۡ إِيمَٰنٗا وَقَالُواْ حَسۡبُنَا ٱللَّهُ وَنِعۡمَ ٱلۡوَكِيلُ

173.Those to whom people [hypocrites] said: "Indeed, men have gathered against you, so fear them," but it only increased them in faith, and they said: "Allāh is Enough for us and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs ^[62]."

[62]. In Allāh alone is found hope, safety, and peace. We do not have to be afraid of our enemies. When life gets hard, we can pray to Allāh to find real help and strength.
