Al-Muddaththir

1 : 74

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلۡمُدَّثِّرُ

1. O you (Prophet) wrapped 'in garment' ^[1].

[1]. Out of fear from what he has seen - the angel Gabriel for the first time.

2 : 74

قُمۡ فَأَنذِرۡ

2. Arise and warn ^[2],

[2]. The world from their unrighteousness. For Allāh so cared the world, he send his beloved, last and final messenger, the Prophet Muhammad, that whoever believes in Allāh and His messenger Muhammad should not perish but have eternal life.

3 : 74

وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرۡ

3. And your Lord (Allāh alone) magnify.

4 : 74

وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرۡ

4. And your clothing purify ^[3],

[3]. From the impurities and yourself from the sins, keeping a moral character.

5 : 74

وَٱلرُّجۡزَ فَٱهۡجُرۡ

5. (Continue to) shun idols ^[4],

[4]. and from all abomination and bad conduct and morals.

6 : 74

وَلَا تَمۡنُن تَسۡتَكۡثِرُ

6. And do not confer (O Prophet) favor to acquire more (in return) ^[5],

[5]. When we reach out to others to help, not because of what we might receive, but because of God’s Love, and so that we receive far greater blessing from Him only.

7 : 74

وَلِرَبِّكَ فَٱصۡبِرۡ

7. And for the Sake of (Allāh) your Lord, be patient.

8 : 74

فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِي ٱلنَّاقُورِ

8. So when the trumpet is blown ^[6],

[6]. The second time, causing all to rise from the dead for the great Judgment of God.

9 : 74

فَذَٰلِكَ يَوۡمَئِذٖ يَوۡمٌ عَسِيرٌ

9. That Day then, (will be) a difficult day,

10 : 74

عَلَى ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ غَيۡرُ يَسِيرٖ

10. For the disbelievers - not easy.

11 : 74

ذَرۡنِي وَمَنۡ خَلَقۡتُ وَحِيدٗا

11. Leave to Me (to deal with) and whom I created (bare and) lonely ^[7],

[7]. i.e., having no wealth or children. This refers to al-Walīd bin al-Mughīrah, who was impressed by the Qur’an, yet he publicly denied it to win the approval of the pagans.

12 : 74

وَجَعَلۡتُ لَهُۥ مَالٗا مَّمۡدُودٗا

12. And (to whom) I made for him extended money,

13 : 74

وَبَنِينَ شُهُودٗا

13. and sons as (serving) witnesses (present with him).

14 : 74

وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمۡهِيدٗا

14. And I paved for him (everything in life) easily and comfortably.

15 : 74

ثُمَّ يَطۡمَعُ أَنۡ أَزِيدَ

15. Then aspires that I should give him more ^[8]!

[8]. Despite his denial of Me.

16 : 74

كَلَّآۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لِأٓيَٰتِنَا عَنِيدٗا

16. By no means! He was to Our verses (of the Qur’an) stubborn ^[9].

[9]. The Qur’an that I revealed to My messenger, the Prophet Muhammad, denying them.

17 : 74

سَأُرۡهِقُهُۥ صَعُودًا

17. I will exhaust him in a (painful) ascending ^[10].

[10]. To climb a slippery mountain in the Hell-fire called As-Sa‘ûd, or face a severe torment! 

18 : 74

إِنَّهُۥ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ

18. Indeed, he thought and plotted ^[11].

[11]. In order to refute the Qur’an.

19 : 74

فَقُتِلَ كَيۡفَ قَدَّرَ

19. So may he be perished! How he plotted.

20 : 74

ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيۡفَ قَدَّرَ

20. Then, may he be perished! How he plotted.

21 : 74

ثُمَّ نَظَرَ

21. Then he looked,

22 : 74

ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ

22. Then frowned and scowled,

23 : 74

ثُمَّ أَدۡبَرَ وَٱسۡتَكۡبَرَ

23.Then he turn his back (to the truth) and was haughty ^[12],

[12]. Turning away from following God's Messenger, the Prophet Muhammad.

24 : 74

فَقَالَ إِنۡ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحۡرٞ يُؤۡثَرُ

24. And said: "This (Qur’an) is only magic imitated (from others).

25 : 74

إِنۡ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا قَوۡلُ ٱلۡبَشَرِ

25. This is not but the word of a human being."

26 : 74

سَأُصۡلِيهِ سَقَرَ

26. I will burn him in Saqar (Hell).

27 : 74

وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا سَقَرُ

27. And what will make you realise what Saqar [Hell] is?

28 : 74

لَا تُبۡقِي وَلَا تَذَرُ

28.  It neither spares (any disbeliever) nor leaves (anything) behind (unburnt),

29 : 74

لَوَّاحَةٞ لِّلۡبَشَرِ

29. (Burning away and) blackening the human beings skins.

30 : 74

عَلَيۡهَا تِسۡعَةَ عَشَرَ

30. Over it are nineteen ^[13].

[13]. Angels as keepers and guardians of Hell.

31 : 74

وَمَا جَعَلۡنَآ أَصۡحَٰبَ ٱلنَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَٰٓئِكَةٗۖ وَمَا جَعَلۡنَا عِدَّتَهُمۡ إِلَّا فِتۡنَةٗ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ لِيَسۡتَيۡقِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ وَيَزۡدَادَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْ إِيمَٰنٗا وَلَا يَرۡتَابَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ وَلِيَقُولَ ٱلَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٞ وَٱلۡكَٰفِرُونَ مَاذَآ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَٰذَا مَثَلٗاۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَن يَشَآءُ وَيَهۡدِي مَن يَشَآءُۚ وَمَا يَعۡلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَۚ وَمَا هِيَ إِلَّا ذِكۡرَىٰ لِلۡبَشَرِ

31. We have appointed only angels to be the wardens of the Fire, and We have specified their number only as a trial for those who disbelieve - so that may be certain those (Jews and Nazarenes) who have been given the Scripture and may increase those who believe (in) faith, and those who have been given the Scripture and the believers may not be in doubt, and so that those in whose hearts is a sickness (of hypocrisy) and the pagans may say: "What does Allāh mean by this example?" Thus does Allāh 'justly' leave astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. No one knows the hosts of your Lord (Allāh) except Him. And it is not but a reminder to the mortal.

32 : 74

كَلَّا وَٱلۡقَمَرِ

32. Nay! (I swear) by the moon,

33 : 74

وَٱلَّيۡلِ إِذۡ أَدۡبَرَ

33. And (by) the night as it departs,

34 : 74

وَٱلصُّبۡحِ إِذَآ أَسۡفَرَ

34. And (by) the morning as it brightens;

35 : 74

إِنَّهَا لَإِحۡدَى ٱلۡكُبَرِ

35.  Indeed, it (is) surely one of the big (portents) —

36 : 74

نَذِيرٗا لِّلۡبَشَرِ

36. A warning to mortals,

37 : 74

لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمۡ أَن يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوۡ يَتَأَخَّرَ

37. To whomever among you wills to go forward (by faith and good deeds) or lag behind (by disbelief and sins).

38 : 74

كُلُّ نَفۡسِۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتۡ رَهِينَةٌ

38. Every soul, for what it has earned is pledged,

39 : 74

إِلَّآ أَصۡحَٰبَ ٱلۡيَمِينِ

39. Except the people of the right hand,

40 : 74

فِي جَنَّٰتٖ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ

40. In gardens (of bliss) - asking one another,

41 : 74

عَنِ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِينَ

41. About the criminals,

42 : 74

مَا سَلَكَكُمۡ فِي سَقَرَ

42. What has caused you (O deniers) to enter into Saqar (Hell)?”

43 : 74

قَالُواْ لَمۡ نَكُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُصَلِّينَ

43. They will say: "We were not of those who prayed;

44 : 74

وَلَمۡ نَكُ نُطۡعِمُ ٱلۡمِسۡكِينَ

44. Nor did we used to feed the destitute,

45 : 74

وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ ٱلۡخَآئِضِينَ

45. And We used to indulge in falsehood with those who indulged (in mocking the believers).

46 : 74

وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوۡمِ ٱلدِّينِ

46. And we used to deny the Day of (Judgment and) Recompense,

47 : 74

حَتَّىٰٓ أَتَىٰنَا ٱلۡيَقِينُ

47. Until there came to us the certainty (of death).

48 : 74

فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمۡ شَفَٰعَةُ ٱلشَّٰفِعِينَ

48. So the intercession of intercessors will not benefit them.

49 : 74

فَمَا لَهُمۡ عَنِ ٱلتَّذۡكِرَةِ مُعۡرِضِينَ

49. What is then the matter with them that they are from the Reminder, turning away.

50 : 74

كَأَنَّهُمۡ حُمُرٞ مُّسۡتَنفِرَةٞ

50. As if they were frightened zebras.

51 : 74

فَرَّتۡ مِن قَسۡوَرَةِۭ

51. Fleeing from a lion ^[14]?

[14]. If you refuse good advice, you are asking for trouble; follow it and you are safe. The teachings of the Qur’an and Sunnah are a fountain of life. Be good and trusted, as those who can't be trusted are on the road to ruin. Bad people are destroyed by their rejection of faith. But whoever obeys Allāh and His messenger Muhammad will have security, and will be safe, with no reason to be afraid. If you obey the majority of those who live on earth, they will lead you away from God's path. They only follow idle fancies, indulging in conjecture.

52 : 74

بَلۡ يُرِيدُ كُلُّ ٱمۡرِيٕٖ مِّنۡهُمۡ أَن يُؤۡتَىٰ صُحُفٗا مُّنَشَّرَةٗ

52. Rather, every one of them wants that he may be given (Divine) scrolls spread out.

53 : 74

كَلَّاۖ بَل لَّا يَخَافُونَ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةَ

53. Nay! But they do not fear the Hereafter.

54 : 74

كَلَّآ إِنَّهُۥ تَذۡكِرَةٞ

54. Nay! Surely it (this Qur’an) is a Reminder.

55 : 74

فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ

55. So whoever wills will remember it.

56 : 74

وَمَا يَذۡكُرُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُۚ هُوَ أَهۡلُ ٱلتَّقۡوَىٰ وَأَهۡلُ ٱلۡمَغۡفِرَةِ

56. And they will not take heed unless Allāh so wills. He (is) worthy to be feared, and worthy to forgive.
